Title: Boots!!!
Post by: D.Shortt on 2014-05-16, 02:04:32
So I been looking to find a decent pair of boots. Jack style boots or so... But I have an issue being my calves are HUGE!! There are none I can find that fit me. I'm thinking I might have to stick with low style boots like "Harley" style or something unless someone knows where I can get some leather to wrap up these ham hawks!!

What time period, country, and social status are you looking for? Its key to narrow this down before you go buy stuff. Such as if this is for a hard or soft kit. Also do you want historical accuracy or just semi historical etc.

Really, I'm a fan of the 14th century style. But right now I'm just trying to work with what I got on my budget. My Profile pic is the best I have so far. But I'm beginning to put a little more effort into it. Also need to find a place for a custom tabard. Would be kinda weird to rock my Karfaxian tabard I think. lol.

You can get lucky resold or new medieval stuff on ebay.com or etsy.com auctions. There's lots of historical sites to check out for footwear.

Yea. I've bought a few pairs already. Had to return each one due to the fact that nothing will wrap around my huge calves. Even Sandlars wouldn't work for me and they are supposed to be adjustable in that region.

Low boots sound like the best solution for you then. You could go with period high boots but they’ll run you the same as a pair of Saddler. As for form, fit and cost Viking Leather crafts are a good option.

As for a custom tabard you are in luck since you are local I can give you the contact information of the seamstress I use who has done several projects for me, including the surcoat in my profile picture. She also has made braies, chausses and tunics for me and her embroidery is very affordable. Drop me a PM if you want her contact info.  ;)

Agreed. If calves are problem, I would go with low cut boots. If you want high boots, do  flax linen material as opposed to leather. It molds to form fit you better and has better ability to stretch. Or make sure leather boots are custom fit to calves and use an easy to mold veg-tanned leather. Other leather for boots is more rigid.

Also Amlann boots and Boots by Bohemond.

For your chosen period, lower boots/shoes are probably more correct anyway. Definitely I would recommend Viking Leathercrafts as an affordable option.

Viking Leather, highly recommended, I have a couple pair by him and for the price they're well worth it

D.Shortt,
I have a pair of these high boots and they have a very wide fitting at the top....
