Who We Are

St. Hubert's Rangers is an international, online brotherhood of individuals who are interested in the anachronism of medieval hunters.  Rangers research all aspects of the daily lives of medieval hunters, and recreate their clothing, accoutrements and hunting equipment.  A ranger's persona could be that of anyone who may have hunted for sport or necessity in the Middle Ages, such as: a nobleman, forester, huntsman, poacher, or outlaw.  For our purposes, a hunter is defined as anyone who participates in the chase of a small game or large game animal, with the means of personally dispatching the hunted animal.  Trapping and angling are beyond the scope of St. Hubert's Rangers.

Many Rangers also participate in medieval-style, live hunts, wearing period clothing and accoutrements, and using period techniques and weapons (within the limits of modern law), in an attempt to experience hunting the way it was done hundreds of years ago.  Rangers can earn hunt rankings, which begin with Apprentice Huntsman / Huntress and culminate with Royal Huntsman / Huntress, based on their success in taking game during these hunts.

This website, along with our private discussion group site, provides the brotherhood with venues for sharing their research, and the development of their personas and hunter kits with like-minded individuals.  Rangers encourage and help each other achieve their anachronism and medieval-style hunting goals.

That IS a very cool idea...it'd certainly make the hunt more 'fair' is the word I think I'm looking for here.  Do they dress out the carcass and cook the meat right there?

You don't have to worry about spoilage?

not during our rifle season, its the week of thanksgiving. if it is warm i usually hang it till after dinner and then skin it, piece it and put it in the fridge until i can cut it up. the chill of the body helps the skinning process.

Where'd you get yours?  I've been looking at Bowstick Archery's wares...I like them a bit better in terms of looks than what I've seen on other sites, say Scorpion Bows & Knives in particular.  I like BA because they stock them in differing poundages based on need.

mine came from england from a reenactor that was over here for an event. it is a white ash bow i think. yew is the best wood but it does not like american humidity. i would look for ash or elm and stay away from oak bows. the only reason i say that is cause oak are openly very porous and could lead to cracking or breaking. i got my arrows from anceint archery only. if anyone is interested i can find my links for good bow distributers

The Original Swashbuckler himself, eh?  He's responsible for the current image of Robin Hood in contemporary thinking!

We had the pleasure of catching him at the St. Louis Ren Faire a few seasons back.  He puts on a great show!  My kids loved it!  Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance.
