From what I understand, there are a lot of great LARPs out there.
But yeah, steel swords aren't for everyone. :) Without the training and safety equipment in modern HEMA, it's often a safer choice to use padded or foam weapons anyway. We've found that as long as you have sufficient gear, steel is pretty safe, and quite a bit safer than the wooden wasters, IMHO, since wood has very little give. But the practice and equipment are highly important.

Haha steel is safe for me but for my friends... Leather doesn't hold back steel well

Apparently all the Amtguard groups in Northern Nevada are scared of SCA trained fighters. I kinda started it, and the current prince of Cynagua (Sir Bjorn?) finished it.
Really nice people. Though once you've worked through all the local talent, and then in a melee twitch wrong and lay out the local heavy hitter (a friend who forgave me that day for it), or do "other things" (Bjorn has such wonderful stories), you tend to get those nice people giving you the squirly eye.
However I'd not mind meeting some other LARP groups just to say "Hi".

I'm just starting a recreational one for my little friend group but if you live near New Hampshire USA we could probably meet up

It sounds like fun! And that's the point ... if you're not having fun you're doing it wrong.

You're a bit far from me. Around 2'860 mi or a 5 day drive.
I'm in Reno, NV. :)

Yea two thousand miles is quite far.
All the larps in NH suck and there are only two

Hi Sampf - don't worry you're not the only LARPer here:)
Most of the systems that I've played in it comes doen to safety and balancing what people are after (many just for roleplay, not combat) with the fact that some folks don't want to get hit, as you say often have little actually protective armor and no one wants to see anyone hurt.
That said, it can get pretty physical especially in some of the European events.

Some of the more serious LARPs I've seen (especially a lot of the videos of some of the big European events) look awesome. The costuming and makeup puts a lot of Hollywood productions to shame! I also think some of the more small scale, single-party adventure LARPs look like they'd be a lot of fun.

Oh I'm lowering my rules of my larp down to near none Except don't kick people where you shouldn't and no steel swords. I have the hit rules down. For instance 3 hits to chest 4 with light 5 with heavy.
Also anyone reccomend anything to add to a costume to make it cooler? I don't have any pics of my kit just some general fantasy knight things.

Use LARP weapons with a carbon core. Get your LARPers use to being beat with something steel like even if still foam in design. They might feel intrigued into doing more later.
