Title: Eat like a hobbit Sunday.
Post by: Sir Nate on 2014-01-12, 19:07:22
Every Sunday I'm going to wake up and Eat throughout the Day like a hobbit.
"What About Second Breakfast"

I did it. I ate like pippin describes throughout the day. I am living the hobbit life.

One of our cats thinks he's a hobbit. He always gets second breakfast, supper, dinner, second dinner... you get the idea. :)

You might not want to adopt that as a regular thing, Sir Nate- at least not once you've gotten older and your metabolism slows down to that of a snail's pace.  lol

"I'm not likely to grow anymore, except sideways." Pippin rotk.
Meh once a month.
I'll have to go for long walks like hobbits too. I should avoid the alcohol intake of hobbits.

My cat wishes it were like that.

I was in eat-like-a-Hobbit mode yesterday, too. By which I mean I had two toaster pastries instead of just one. I'm an extremely light eater most of the time. :P

Then you're doing it wrong, Douglas.  lol

I can't eat like that anymore...its gotten so that watching my intake is an unconscious action more often than not.  I avoid buffets for that specific reason- I'm not going to get my money's worth and truthfully, it doesn't even taste that good to me anymore.  I do miss it though...Old Country Buffet was my best friend on Sundays; I used to take my daughters there on Sundays and we'd get there just before the church rush.  Good times.

Yeah, for most of us, the metabolism changes a bit with age. When I was in my early '20s, I could eat a half-gallon of ice cream and still lose weight. I weighed about 60 lbs less than I do now.

Now I have to be more careful. The weight slowly creeps upward if I eat everything I want and don't exercise.

You just need to have the meals pippin describes. Including tea.
I think bacon should be included for breakfast.

Amen; for me, it was another plate of fried chicken, mashed pots and green beans (OCB, I miss you lol) but in either case, I could eat like that and not gain a pound.  Now, if I look at food wrong I'm gaining.  So not fair!

I weighed myself over the weekend, I'm 200 lbs.  Heaviest I've ever been in my entire life.  I have a small frame, so its pretty ugly right about now.  Thing is, I'm not stressing over it like I think I should be, I'm almost to the point of not caring.  A favorite pair of khaki's no longer fits due to the excess spare tire; I'm just so disgusted with it all.  Curiously though, I feel no real compunction to do anything about it.  I look at my uncles, who were all my size when they were roughly my age...and with one exception (two if you count my Dad), all the rest of them are well over 200 and have the big guts to prove it.

I hear you, Nate.  However, my ideal weight is 168lbs; I've been getting by at 175 since my early 30s but ideally, that's what I would weigh.  Small frame and all that; but we are the same height.

I'm hoping to stay around 200 but drop some inches from my waistline; I was a 29" waist in high school (36" now) and about 80 pounds less than I was Dec 2012 (150 in high school). I've dropped some weight since my peak but still hovering around 200. I think I'm slightly lucky in that diet doesn't seem to matter; chocolate frosting for dinner 3 times a week and didn't gain a pound; ramen noodles for dinner 5 times a week and didn't gain or lose a pound. Seems to be exercise only; a bit of exercise, I can drop some weight; no exercise, and I just "maintain".

Something I did since Jan 2013 is I've substantially cut down on fast food. It used to be dinner 2-3 times a week and lunch 3-4 times a week; only had it for dinner a few times last year (with my parents), and usually only 1-2 times a week at lunch (social time w/coworkers). I also don't keep soda at home except on rare occasions (Thanksgiving, Christmas) and only have it when I go out to dinner or with my parents (typically once a week or less). Seems to have helped.

My main motivation has been that Italian style armor I bought; the cuirass was 4" too small in the waist for me, and I knew that when I bought it. It's about 2" too small last time I tried it on (Nov). If there's anything that can motivate me to drop some pounds, it's fitting into armor.

But I still refuse to eat veggies! :D

Welcome to the battle of the ‘bulge’ brothers!  ;D

I’ve been engaged in my fight for ten years now ever since I officially hit the middle age group AND quit smoking (smoked 3 packs a day for 26 years). Therefore my metabolism took a serious nose dive along with my rediscovered taste buds brought me to my current weight woes of 236 pounds at six foot one. Still I don’t exercise enough and need to work on more cardio just for general health. I hope to get down to an even 200 lbs which would be the ideal weight for my height and larger frame.  :-\

Congratulations on quitting smoking, Brother!  As for the battle of the bulge, I find that I'm a recalcitrant fighter at best- although of late, that's not the case so much.  Not being able to fit in clothes that as recent as last year I was wearing (albeit a little tight, I could still fit them) is a big deal.  I hate clothes shopping so my wife does it for me mostly, but she's going off old measurements, my fault not hers.  I would dearly love to drop all this weight and get back to my fighting weight (and build) - it just seems a LOT harder than it used to be.  Of course, I'm daunted by my weight- I've never been this heavy before.

I'd like to blame stress but really, its pure laziness and lack of motivation.  I'd much rather sit in my recliner, chomping chips and swilling beer while playing video games than working out or doing anything remotely strenuous.

Congrats on quitting smoking, my step dad just quit, but he still in transitioning and smokes electric.
Ya my frame has a that 200lb. Range but my eldest brother is 6.1, my uncle is 6.2 and my great grand dad was 6.3, my other grandfather was 6.2, I think my cousin is 6.3 or 4.
Ya I've been to the gym 3 times in a row now and am going today. I've noticed a huge difference, but thanks to pool class and having just stopped fencing I think I was in decent shape when I started going.
Once you get in habit of exercising its easy, but the real challenge of losing more so fat is eating right.
Like not eating that 7th slice of pizza. Or the last beer in the back I the fridge.
I've gotten out of habit of eating when I'm passed nuclear leak limit. In fact I don' t often eat to the point of fullness anymore. But I like to think I'm not being gluttonous by say eating that 7th slice.

Actually I've started to do dome exercise in armor, sometimes with helm. It is painful but in a feel the burn way. Just usually the hauberk tho. Sit ups, push ups. (Funny how alot of low tech exercises say up, I'm going to practice sit downs this weekend, maybe some stand ups)

I need to drop 25 lbs. pronto for the spring & summer fighting season. I believe stress has a lot to do with it for me.  I ballooned when I was unemployed, then got in the best shape since college football while under-employed at Home Depot throwing freight 8 hours a day.  Since fully employed in my chosen field of work, my weight has slowly crept up due to the daily stresses, lack of exercise and lack of “me time” with two little ones running around the house.  :(

Stress, such a simple burden, but if not tended to it can be the downfall of all good men.

Wow quiet profound that. You can quote me if ya like.

But if we did the hobbit way of taking care of stress we'd be seeing smoke puffs as boats. That's the finest weed in the shire

Same height here, but never been a smoker (a pipe with a scotch on the weekends doesn't count  ;) )

My doctor keeps telling me 200 would be ideal at 6’1”, but I haven’t been that light since the 80’s when I was skinny as a rail.  I’m shooting for dropping 25 from 250 down to 225.

Sir Brian not to be harsh, but when we first met you seemed rather short and when you said 6.1. I was sorta confused but then I realized I'd been higher on a hill. I hope I didn't offend you in any way by saying that.

Yeah, I've slacked off on the diet and exercise since this past fall, and I'm noticing the difference. It doesn't take long to lose whatever progress you have made.

I consider 200 lbs to be by "ceiling". That's the point where I don't like how my clothes are fitting, or the lack of energy I have. I've kept it around 195 for the last year or two, but I was down to 186 at one point, and I need to get back there. I'm between 5'10 and 5'11, so that's a good weight for me.

I don't think I want to be this heavy ever again...it isn't just the fatigue or inertia but I move slower, stairs are more of an issue (I have two sets of staircases at home and I'm up and down them several times a day) and well...sitting is much easier than standing, standing is much easier than walking about and run...well, I generally don't run at all.  lol

Geez, 230 was my ceiling, and I'm shorter than almost everyone. Maybe all those times my parents said NOT to eat cake, or frosting, or cookies, or ice cream for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or all 3 ... maybe, just maybe, they were slightly just a little bit partially right?

I've found resistance traing to be the easiest way to keep it off. For every year a man is over the age of 30, he loses 1 pound of muscle to fat. It's muscle that burns up a lot of calories, so as it goes to fat your metabolism slows down. I do a total body weight routine 3 times a week for roughly an hour. Here's the best part:  I also eat just under 3000 calories per day spread out over 6 meals ( talk about a Hobbitt)! Obviously there's a lot more protien than candy in that diet, but I'm never hungry. I'm 41 and 6 FT 2. I topped out at 200 before I hit the weights. I'm "down" to 190, but more importantly, my body fat went from 24 to 18 so I've traded A LOT of fat for muscle (which looks way better IMO).

That is good news, Sir Patrick- it means there's hope after all after 40.  I just turned 41 and need to get my arse in gear, so to speak.  Basically, I took a whole year off from physical activity.

Gentlemen - again I find myself inspired.  Many familiar stories here - too bad we don't live close enough to organize a medieval fitness group :)  I have to make it through this next six months - after that will have more time to fit in exercise and healthy hobbies (like HEMA).  But ugh, the waistline has been getting tight again the last 3-4 months :(

I’m in at 145, down 5 in the last few weeks.  The only change was not taking seconds at dinner.  This is more difficult than it sounds; my wife is an EXCELLENT  :) cook.

Haha, was about to say, "he weighs less than me...". During the winter time, especially when its this cold, its eat like a hobbit everyday. The only thing counteracting to that is shoveling. Like I said for my fitness plan on another post: "run in the morning in thy maille" like the knights of old used to do.

I do not recall in any of my readings of knights running in the morning while clad in maille, Aiden.  Do you happen to know where you read that?

I have heard of the odd group who do this on a regular basis, but they're modern re-enactors; I'd love to read some reference material regarding this.  At the very least, it sounds like a good idea on paper- although, I imagine your 'laundress' might take issue with the increased amount of clothes that need washing.  lol

Actually knights would do a 5 mile run in the woods in their armor.
It was on going medieval by mike loades.
It was part of their workout and training.
Idk about every morning though.

Sir Nate is correct, in the program Going Medieval by Mike Loades this is stated. Do you question the word of Mile Loades?

I remember seeing it mentioned somewhere else as well. There was an accounting of running a couple of miles in armor daily in order to stay in shape. Can't remember where else I saw it though, other than Mike Loades.

There was even more recommended when training up for a duel, but this was a general fitness sort of thing, separate from that.

Methinks if I do that every day, to improve my agility, I'll be able to run faster than a horse.
