Title: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Ian on 2012-07-17, 02:00:07
Any of the video game geeks planning on playing Guild Wars 2?  I'm going to give it a go I think. Looks like they've tackled a lot of the stale mmo features with some interesting innovations.  They've moved away from the kill x boars, and gather y bundles of sticks. Quests will instead be dynamic events. For example, a villager screams for help with an impending ogre attack, and if you don't do anything ogres come and destroy the village and since it's a persistent world, that village is now destroyed. They claim to have solved quest camping and kill sniping with this system, sounds interesting.  A potential breath of fresh air in a world of WoW copies.

I never played the first one, though my brother-in-law has played it for quite some time. I'm cautious about joining new MMOs at this point just because of how much of a time sink they are, and I do tend to get myself pretty well hooked. :)

It looks interesting enough. I think I'll grab a copy.

I'm not overly familiar with it, but I've heard good things, so it's worth a shot. I'll grab a pre-order.

GW has historically been and will continue to be in GW2 a non subscription game, so even if it's a dud, at least all you bought was the box :)

Oh, and if you pre-purchase (not to be confused with pre-ordering a copy through amazon or something), but a digital copy through their website, you get a 3 day headstart on launch, and automatic access to all beta events.  Figure it's worth a shot!

Yeah, I picked up the Digital Deluxe, and downloaded the client last night. They've already invited me to this weekend's beta, but this weekend is spoken for, so I can't do it yet, sadly.

Those videos are great! This actually has me pretty excited now. I need to start reading about the classes/races, and see what's going on.

Breaking the trinity and switching to a dynamic world-driven quest model with level-scaling has me REALLY INTRIGUED. I'm completely tired of the WoW way of doing things.

I need to figure out what class will fit my playstyle best. In WoW, the druid fit me best, and in SWTOR, it was the Jedi Shadow. I need to see how the races play into those classes too. And since there's some sort of world PVP, I guess I need to figure out what the factions are, etc as well.

I saw some videos of it back in March'ish, and it looked great. I love the "non subscription" games since my game play time fluctuates heavily and some months are 0 hours. The lack of the 'holy trinity' looks very intriguing. Very cool!

I still can't get into MMOs...maybe its the amount of time required to fully enjoy the experience?  I know I have little room to talk w/regard to time considering how much I give to my consoles...lol

These days MMOs tend to hold my attention a lot better than single player games, for some reason. But that's a double-edged sword. :)

I looked at it a bit more, and the world PVP is actually "World vs World", so there are no "factions" within a world. Very cool.

I'm having a hard time picking a class just by reading and watching some youtube vids. Several look appealing. I'm tempted to play one of those cat characters though (Charr)... they sort of appeal to me the way the Worgen did in Wow.

Test out some various classes in the beta weekends.  I downloaded the digital deluxe this morning.  I should have some time to play around this weekend with it.  I'm going to try to get my hands on as many classes as possible prior to release.

I'm on travel this week, so I may miss this beta weekend, though I'm going to try to get in a little on Sunday before they close it down.

After reading up on things, I'm actually tempted to go with a Sylvari. The Charr, as awesome as they look, are actually pretty big and lumbering (9 feet tall) and I'm not sure I like their culture and background. Whereas, here's an in-game description of the Sylvari: "They struggle to balance curiosity with duty, eagerness with chivalry, and warfare with honor. Magic and mystery entwine to shape the future of this race that has so recently appeared." .. And they're plant people, which is neat. :)

I normally play mage classes, but I'm tempted to step a little outside of that. Elementalist still looks like a natural choice to me, but the Ranger looks really fun too.

Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-07-25, 14:03:36

Did you get a chance to try out the beta weekend? I only got in for a couple of hours on Sunday.

I made use of the time to play about 30 minutes on each of 4 different classes. At first I pretty well talked myself out of Elementalist, and started considering Mesmer or Ranger. But I think I'm swinging back to Elementalist.

I was hoping for another beta weekend before launch, but since they shut down the forums with a note saying "see you at launch!", I guess that was it.

My brother-in-law and some of our renfaire friends will be playing too. We'll have to try to coordinate which world server to play on.

This guy's Elementalist build is pretty impressive. Able to handle 2-vs-1 in some cases, and doesn't start losing until 3:1 or 4:1. Wow.

It's from an earlier beta though. It may no longer work.

I did get some time to play.  Played a human thief, silvari elementalist, and a norn ranger.  I really enjoyed the norn ranger a lot.  The thief felt a little chaotic to me and the story didn't grab me, and I didn't get much time with the elementalist because I just enjoyed the Norn so much.  The environments were really cool, and I enjoyed the 'dynamic event' questing system.  There were only a few moments that felt 'grindy' to me.  Instead most things just felt like they were happening and in real time and I could just join in on the fun.  I liked that you don't 'tag' mobs so you don't have to compete for stuff, which encourages helping others and not being a jerk.

Also liked how your abilities are based on the weapons you have equipped.  Weapon switching makes for some interesting gameplay since it alters your abilities on the fly.  The skill tree is cool too, and it seems like you can get away with a lot of viable build diversity with the skill points.  Initial glance seemed like they kept a decently complex RPG skill build as part of the game instead of making everything uber simplified a la Diablo 3 and the direction WoW seems to be going.

Overall, I came away from the beta with a very positive impression and will definitely be playing.  Since you and I pre-purchased we also get a 3 day head start on release.  Definitely need to coordinate servers.

I think that 3-day head start puts it at Saturday the 25th, which is also MDRF opening day. I may not get to do much over that weekend other than create my character, unfortunately. I'll have to make more time during the week, and use the Monday night as my real head-start.

I liked the Ranger too, and came within an inch of convincing myself to play that as my main. But from prior game experience, I know that while I work with pet classes well enough, they don't keep me as entertained in the long-run usually. For instance, in WoW I started out as a Warlock, but ended up enjoying the Druid a lot more, because it was faster-paced, and more self-contained... not to mention that the shapeshifting and self-heals made it more dynamic and adaptable.

GW2 has some of the dynamic adaptation and self-reliance built into nearly every class, of course. But even so, the I think the elemental attunement system will work better for my playstyle than most of the other choices.

It sounds like world-transfers will be free at first, and then later restricted to once per week and have a gem cost.

I'm now thinking I'm going to be a Warrior on my main. It looks more DPSy and less Tanky than WoW's equivalent. I tend to like very offensive DPS builds. Point me at the enemy, turn me loose. :)

I think I'm going to roll a ranger, but the guardian is also intriguing to me.  I like how abilities work together, for example the elementalist can drop a wall of flame and when the ranger shoots through it the arrows light on fire and deal more damage. I think that's such a cool feature.

I anticipate starting on Saturday during the 'headstart'. It doesn't seem like servers are broken in to different flavors like pvp or pve so I guess all we need to do is pick the server that has a cool name!

Make sure you run the launcher now and then as they've been rolling out files every so often.

Odd that the game's forums are down except during the tests. Most games I've gotten into have had a strong community on the official forums before the game gets released. It's usually after release that it degenerates into a useless quagmire. :)

So launch is in the middle of the night tonight.  I probably won't log on until tomorrow morning, but then again I'm flying late in the evening tonight, so when I get home I may take a peak :)  I think I will be rolling on the server 'Maguuma'.  I will let you know for certain when I get a look at the server list in game.

I see you made it into the guild. I couldn't tell if I was inviting you correctly, since there was no feedback from the interface. My brother-in-law is the guild founder, and most of the other folks in there are his co-workers, or people we both know from the renfaire (though I have no idea who is who based on their in-game names).

Wow, up into the 30's already?  Nice. :) I think I just hit level 24 last night.

I'm liking the dynamic content system so far. It's a lot nicer than WoW's "collect 15 of X, from these monsters that only drop it 20% of the time, and then kill their leader, where you'll have to stand in line and wait for the respawn"

The environments are beautifully done, and the music is pretty good.

And it was a pretty smooth launch for an MMO. Supposedly they hit over 400k concurrent players on Tuesday.

Yes, the dynamic content is great.  Feels way less grindy than other MMOs.  I haven't had to do anything other than events/quests to continue smoothly leveling.  I bounce back and forth between two zones for me level range and it works out great.  I like how even if you 'over-level' content it bumps you back down so not only is it still challenging, but it's still rewarding with XP etc.

The only reason I'm in the 30's is because Hurricane Isaac has given me some unexpected days off from work.  Not much flying to do in a hurricane :)

Launch has been nice and smooth for me so far.  Only hiccup was the login servers on the launch day, but that was fixed within about an hour or so.  I see people complaining about the AH being down, but I could really care less at this point.  I don't need to AH gear at level 30.... Totally enjoying the experience right now!

Have you dabbled with any World v World v World yet?
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-08-30, 14:20:36

Yeah, the login servers were having issues for several hours in the early morning hours on Saturday, but I haven't seen much beyond that.

I do sort-of wish the AH was up and running, but it's not a big deal. I usually can get a decent amount of money buy gathering and then selling the materials. Often that works better for me than grinding out a crafting skill (I usually end up regretting the grind later, due to the costs and the money I could have had from just selling the materials).

Speaking of crafting... I assume you already have all 8-slot storage bags/boxes or better by now. But if not, I made some 8-slot boxes and have extras.

I haven't tried any of the PVP yet, I usually save that for closer to end-game as I use up the PVE content. But I may give it a shot sooner or later, since I think it level-balances you there too.

I started running into issues last night with dying a lot, but I've been sticking to one zone, and ended up doing content 3 or 4 levels above me. I finally finished the zone and hit level 24, and the next zone over is another 15-25 zone, so it looks like I'll be having smooth sailing for a while again (I should have bounced back and forth, but wasn't thinking that way). As long as the content is level appropriate, I tend not to die much. The warrior is pretty survivable, and versatile (though it looks like all of the classes are versatile in this game).

I'm actually glad I chose the Warrior. I can spec myself for DPS, and wear the heavier armors, and the longbow is full of fire and explosive arrows.  :)

Well, I found my first "jumping puzzle" exploration achievement. I'm actually impressed that they put some serious attention to detail into things that are completely optional, and not everyone will both to look for.

When you're in Lion's Arch, there's a vista viewpoint on the map at the south edge. It's reasonably well hidden, but getting back out is a lot more of a puzzle than getting to it. There's even an old pirate's ghost that attempts to lead you through the maze, and at the end there's a vendor selling rare level-40 weapons for karma points (they were all about 9800 karma, which I've never even come close to).

That was a pretty neat labyrinth to explore.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Ian on 2012-09-04, 21:49:58
Yeah, I find exploration fun in this game and not just tedious like I did in WoW.  The zones are designed very well and really allow freedom of exploration.  Sometimes you'll even find places that you were not intended to get to, but it's still fun :)
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-09-18, 14:04:48

Is it just me, or does all the content get sharply more difficult past 50? I'm having to watch my health a lot more closely now. Granted, I'm traiting myself up as a glass-cannon sort of build... as much as a warrior can be a glass-cannon, anyway. I'm favoring DPS over survivability.

The environments are beautiful. I've been doing the snowy mountainous regions, and they're downright pretty.

Have you guys had a chance to check out the PVP yet? I took a quick look last night at the WvWvW, and I'm a little disappointed that you still have to pay repair costs while there. I understand why they left that in, since otherwise there wouldn't be much of a death penalty, and thus nothing to stop people from "zerging". But... ugh. :)

I know, I know... "don't die"... :)

I haven't tried the Structured PVP yet, but since that enforces fairness by using alternate gear, I'm guessing there's no repairs there. Smaller skirmishes in a controlled setting might be more fun in the long-run anyway.

My GW2 time will be more limited in the coming weeks now, since it'll be crunch-time to get some things ready for DoK.

Limited time in WvWvW pvp but from what I've seen it seems pretty fun. I love that you can build seige weapons and stuff. I just dinged 73 so I want to get to 80 before I really dive in to pvp. Your stats get boosted to 80 when your lower, but your gear doesn't.  I also didn't dig the repair costs in pvp.... dying is part of the game, and generally in pvp it has much greater frequency than in pve.  All I've done in structured pvp is the training quests in the lobby, so no real experience.
