Title: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir James A on 2012-06-21, 15:25:39
Months away at this point, but here's a new thread for this year. :)

Excellent.

August: 25, 26
September: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 & 30
October: 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 & 21

Looking forward to it; too bad about the empty scabbards though.  ;)

You'll just have to make a "Maryland special". It's a shame to hack up and glue together a sword+scabbard, even if it's just a $20 SLO :)

I know, I know...and I have a sword and scabbard for it...its just that I'm loathe to do it, as you said.  Plus, where can I go to get them to cut up my sword?  I like what you guys did, kept a small bit of length at the top to give it the weight to hang properly...but what'd you do with the rest of the blade?  Cut into chunks and inserted into the scabbard with epoxy/glue?  I recall Sir Brian mentioning powdered lead?
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Brian on 2012-06-21, 19:04:52
No I used lead strips like the kind used for making stained glass lambs. Sir Edward used approximately 10" or so of the tip on his. A basic 5 minute epoxy works for securing the hilt to the scabbard.  ;)
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-06-21, 19:35:07

I left about 6" of blade on the hilt to epoxy into the scabbard. The remainder of the blade, I cut in half and threw one of the pieces down inside the scabbard. It's still a little light as a result. Looking back on it, I think it would have been better to use the entire blade in there, but with some epoxy on it too, so the weight would be right. With a cut in the blade, if it did somehow come out, at least I could show it to still be a neutralized sword, even if the rest of the blade is still technically inside the scabbard.

Cutting mine was easy, but it was a crap blade that I sincerely doubt had been hardened. Even if it had been, I think I could still cut it the way I did. I used one of those heavy-duty "cut off discs" on the dremel.

Ah...power tools.  Heh.  Time to make a request of my lovely Lady!

An angle grinder should make short work of it, too. When it comes time to make my MD special, I'll give it a go and report back.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir William on 2012-06-22, 14:44:58
Ok...I'm guessing the cutting up the blade part is so it isn't a sword anymore...otherwise I'd just drill holes with the sword in the scabbard and either bolt or rivet it into place after epoxying the whole assembly.  Now that I think of it, the blade is so thick, I may want to be rid of some of it to lighten the overall load.

Bolting through the sword and scabbard is an idea we talked about over here as well. That's what my brother-in-law plans to do.

Or possibly riveting it, which could serve as some minor decoration and wouldn't look out of period.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-06-22, 15:51:33

True, but he wanted the bolt to be removable so he could unsheath it when not at faire.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir William on 2012-06-22, 17:18:37
Why would he want to do that?  Its more or less damaged goods right?  Or does his sword already have cut-outs?
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-06-22, 18:10:25

He has a new sword for it, one that he bought from me. It's one of the Hanwei blunt trainers (practical hand-and-a-half). I think he still wanted to be able to use it as a practice sword. It probably wouldn't weaken it too much to put one or two small holes in the wider end of the blade.

Ah, I was thinking it would be a "sacrificial sword". He could get an "acorn nut" (http://www.mmsacc-stainless.com/assets/auto_generated_images/acorn-nut.jpg (http://www.mmsacc-stainless.com/assets/auto_generated_images/acorn-nut.jpg)) and grind down the hex edges. It would look like the end of a rivet, but could be unscrewed from the other side. And they're about $1 for a bolt & nut, plus the few minutes to file down the hex edges. Just tossing it out there, since I'm brainstorming for my own MDRF special too. :)

Purchased my Forever Pass today! You have to purchase them over the phone now and pick them up at the Faire...kind of defeats the purpose of saving time by going in the pass holder's gate when they use to mail the passes to you.  :-\

Oh ok.  A lifetime pass might be worth looking into for the likes of us!  lol

I usually make at least 3-4 weekends for MDRF...I mean, I would like to.  Knowing you gents will be there is all the impetus I usually need.

Well they do have 9 day passes available for $90.00 if that would work for you.  ;)

I'm not sure if we'll make opening day, but Dina really wants to. If we make it out, I'll send a text when I get there, though I'll probably spend the majority of the day with her and sneak away when she wants to see shows.

I believe they are selling them over the phone and they aren't mailing them out anymore this close to opening day.  ;)

I could also purchase right there as well I'm guessing.  Sir James, I understand your situation...for me, it is our 5th anniversary so I'm not even sure I'll be allowed out!  That's more or less a no-go for Ft. Belvoir as well, which is a shame because that's just a great opportunity to teach younger folk about chivalry and knighthood.

So who's making what days? And also which are armour days? I kept getting confused last year and attempted to grill myself in duels with bare-armed scottsmen... ;)

Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Brian on 2012-08-20, 08:08:44
Well I typically try and go in armor both opening days. Since I have more flexibility with my harness now and according to the weather forecast both days are turning out to be on the brutal side of hot, so I'll probably go in full harness on Saturday and 'armor-light' on Sunday. :-\
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-08-20, 20:47:02

I'll be there both days, but whether I do armor will depend a lot on the weather. I have a lot of lighter things I can wear too.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012

I won't be able to make it sat or sun for opening weekend. :(

I might be able to make Sunday, but Saturday's definitely a no-go.  I'll text you boys when I'm on the premises (if I make it), ok?

TO ALL MDRF's Knights: It's a done deal!! My wife (Lady Rachel) & I shall attend MDRF on our way home from Tampa on Sat., Sept. 1 for the day. Hopefully, my eldest step-son will be with us as well as squire. :) I'll be bringing my kit with me in case armor is appropriate for the event. It would be nice to meet as many of you as possible & armor up for some pics. :) Who will be attending amongst you on Sept. 1st?? Please let me know so I can coordinate with you.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Brian on 2012-08-21, 18:45:06
Huzzah! I will be in attendance. I'm not sure if I'll be in armor if the heat index is expected to exceed 90 degrees. If it is I'll be in a green leather kilt or my green tunic and yellow chausses. Looking forward to meeting you and thy lady! :)
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-08-21, 19:23:39

Sat Sept 1? I should be there, if all goes according to plan. I don't usually start skipping days until a few weeks in. :)
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir William on 2012-08-21, 19:57:40
Count me in for Sep 1...especially if I don't make opening weekend; I'll be wearing armor regardless of the heat- as most of my kit is maille it isn't as bad for me as it is for some of my plate-clad brethren.  It'll be good to meet you, Lord Dane, and your family.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir James A on 2012-08-21, 20:06:08
Huzzah! IIRC that's a family trip, so I'm not sure I'll be up here, but if I am, I'll make an effort to head out there. If I do, I'll post up what I'm wearing, since I probably won't decide until the weather is known.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012

So shall it be, Sir Brian, Sir Edward, & Sir William. Look forward to meeting you all as well. I'm gona pack up & prep my stuff. Any suggestions for faire attire re: expected weather??
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012

Well if you want to brave the heat & humidity you can go with armor however I would also bring some lighter garb if the heat index is beyond endurance!  ;)

Saw the weather report/forecast & light garb is best, Sir Brian. I'll wear my noble SCA garb for MD Renfaire & match my wife. I'll bring the armor next time we meet up. Too much baggage for FL & one day of faire. :) However, I will bring a couple wooden wasters (for practice/fun), my great sword (for show), & my Order sword for accolades. :) I think a match-up of knightly skill is in order for display & fun. ;) What do you think?

Just remember that MDRF is a no-weapons faire. Irritating, I know.

Just remember that MDRF is a no-weapons faire. Irritating, I know.

That's a news update I did not consider. Makes bringing my armor pointless if I can't even wear my sword. Thanks for informing me, Sir Edward. NOTE: I make sure the ren-faires I work/attend are weapon-friendly for sake of re-enactors, staff, customers in garb (i.e. CTRF, KRF for examples). They allow weapons with restrictions obviously. ;) Safety 1st & check your weapons before hitting the tavern.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Lord Dane on 2012-08-23, 08:28:01
We'll still come for meeting the group but I must say...I hate NO weapon faires. :( Big disappointment. Unless PA Ren-Faire is possiblity for meeting you gents?? What do you think?? I've never been there & it is still along the way.

Is that a viable option for any of you to do Sept. 1 at PA Ren Faire (Sir Brian, Edward, William or others)??

Either way, I'm flexible but as Sir Edward stated....that no weapons policy is 'irritating'. Sorry, I'm just used to having them as part of my medieval persona.

Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir James A on 2012-08-23, 14:29:41
Yeah, the MDRF no-weapons policy is terrible. It even includes "costume weapons" like wall hangers. It's not without reason, but, still no fun.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-08-23, 15:03:35

PARF is probably out at this point. We made a point of going up there last week, during the weeks that it doesn't overlap with MDRF (which is our home faire). MDRF pretty much dominates our time for the next two months.

The weapons policy stinks. But we've managed to work around it lately with swords that are cut down and glued into the scabbard. Technically they disallow costume weapons as well, but once they saw that ours can't be drawn, they were OK with it.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Sir William on 2012-08-23, 15:08:07
Yea, just talk to Sirs Edward or Wolf, they can tell you about the shenanigans involving swords in previous years.  There is an option you can try that some of our knights have already put into effect- the ubiquitous 'Faire sword'.  Find a wallhanger and glue/rivet it into the scabbard so that it can never be drawn...some of us have gotten away with that.  I have one I'm going to convert this or next weekend depending on time and such.  At least then you'd have something hanging at your side, even if it is only for show- but hey, that's what these faires are all about, the show, right?

Got ninja'd by the Knight Commander.  lol

I just reworked my 'Maryland Special' last night. This will be the fifth year of me carrying it and I had to reapply some epoxy glue because the blade had become quite loose. ;)

BTW, this coming weekend's weather looks manageable:

http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/maryland/crownsville-2387843/ (http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/maryland/crownsville-2387843/)

84 and sun/clouds on Saturday
80 and possible showers on Sunday.

I'd rather not wear the armor in the rain, so maybe Saturday.
Title: Re: MDRF, 2012
Post by: Lord Dane on 2012-08-23, 17:50:09
I can try but I won't have time to retro fit anything in FL more than likely. My faire (KRF) starts Sept. 1 so I am putting off opening day & going Sept. 3 instead. I'll see what wife & I can work out as we can only stop at one faire on way home as I must work on Sunday. MDRF does sound most probable & I'll just cope w/ no sword at faire (but bring them anyways). :(
I'll let you guys know either way from FL as I will have my laptop.

Maybe I'll just buy the MDRF & change their weapon policy.  ;D

If you could do that, that'd be awesome.  Then you could make it a full-time enterprise, or maybe make it last longer, like into the winter months.  I'd go, I know that much!  ;)

There's an old thread around here somewhere about the old VARF- it was on this large plot of land, still has a standing tower on it and some outbuildings that are just standing there...waiting for a buyer.

It's actually something I plan on doing in the future, Sir William. In fact, you would personally like the business concept I have. Been planning it for some time now. When capital venture & permits in place, I shall indeed start my business. :) I'll discuss with you.

Here you go Lord_Dane. The first picture is from last year and the second from around 2008/2009 season after I got the counterbalance issue resolved. All I did was cut off the blade except for approximately 4 -5 inches and then used epoxy glue to secure it into the scabbard.  :)

Look forward to it, Sir Edward. :) I will not be in armor so won't be as identifiable but will have my wife & eldest step-son w/ me. Renfaire garb is better for this humidity anyways. I'll be in armor Monday for KRF when I get home.

I'll be wearing a long-sleeved black tunic w/ gold & navy pattern trim w/ black pants, boots, black leather belt, and accessories. My step-son will be in all black & my wife will be wearing her light blue dress as seen in my knight page.

Supposed to be t-storms coming in on Sunday so you may not want to be in armor then, Sir Brian.  Of course, I should've done the necessary adjustments when I had the time (just not the impetus) so I'll be Sir Bingo Wing yet again.  Maybe.  lol

Yep, the plan is to be there Saturday and Sunday. I usually take a break on Monday for the holiday weekend, and just go the two days. Three days of faire in a row is a bit much, even for me.

So far the weather looks decent. Hot on Saturday, a little less-so on Sunday. They're calling for some rain on Monday, which has me slightly worried for Sunday, if the time-frame shifts.

http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/maryland/crownsville-2387843/ (http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/maryland/crownsville-2387843/)

So maybe Sunday is the armor day? That works for me. Maybe I'll wear one of my lighter tunics on Saturday after all.

Lord_Dane, I *think* that should be okay. I know some impromptu wasters combat has occurred in the parking lot.

Yeah, I don't think they'll notice, unless someone complains about people being dangerous with them. Sword-fighting in the parking lot would not be OK, for instance.

That will be a last-minute answer for me, since it's the weekend before Days of Knights, and hinges on whether or not I have everything done / assembled / ready by then - but seems promising.

I should be there both days this weekend. I have no idea which days I might want to do armor yet, since it's possible I may have to leave for a couple hours in the middle of one of the days, and one of the days I may have some non-rennie friends to drag around for the day.

Who knows, they might fall completely in love with it, especially if they've never been.  You've been friends long?  If so, you've taken your sweet time in introducing them to the Medieval dark side!  ;)

Actually one is a friend who I think kinda wants to be a rennie (he spent A LOT on garb last season, but hasn't been back since then, until now). The rest are friends of his that I don't know.

Awesome! We'd love to see you out there!

Are you going to garb up? I'm not sure about armor yet, since it will depend on the weather, but I'm more likely to do that on Sundays since that's when Sir Brian can attend as well. But in either case, I always garb up in something. :)

Oh - probably.  I rarely get to wear the garb I've created anymore.  I'll probably rock the 16th century "Jane Sexton" outfit.  My daughter will be in whatever she wants - could be a princess - could be a dragon. Totally depends on her mood.  Son and Husband?  Who knows.

Sunday is looking to be a little on the chilly side, with only a high of 70. Saturday will be warm though.

This makes me wonder which armor and how much I want to wear on Sunday. Some of it has the opposite effect in cooler weather, making it impossible to stay warm. It might actually be a good day to break out the new gambeson and go more 13th century.

Well it looks like this weekend's weather is shaping up to be another beautiful two days to wear armor if one is inclined to go both days.
I will only be able to make Sunday so I might go with a different variation of armor this Sunday. I'm thinking armor lite or "My Other Maille is at the Armorer's" type of harness.  ;)
– Basically Gambeson with leather armor and quilted cuisses.  :-\

No rain & cool 70 degrees expected. :) Anyone interested in stopping in some time, please let me know & we can coordinate. Link: www.ctfaire.com (http://www.ctfaire.com). Up in the air at this point. I was supposed to get my truck back yesterday, but it had a hidden surprise that needed parts, so I won't have it until tomorrow. I still need to pick up a cap for it (which they only have in Westminster, MD), amongst other errands, and haven't even started on DoK kit tasks yet, and still have a few boxes in the mail - it's a "possibly", but I'd probably leave before closing to beat traffic and get home with time to do some more work.

I'm a certain (barring catastrophes) for Sun of closing weekend though

No worries Sir Brian. I can loan her my warhammer "Head Splitter" for your security concerns.  ;D That will keep the members in line. :)

it's a "possibly", but I'd probably leave before closing to beat traffic and get home with time to do some more work.

Let me know how it works out.

Sir Wolf and I were talking about doing lighter garb rather than armor tomorrow. I think that's particularly a good idea now that there's some rain in the forecast. I may do my woodsman thing.

Sigh. I'm going to have to skip tomorrow. I still have a bit of staining left to do, and need to finish the slat bed or make a quick second rope bed. Short story long....

I didn't get my truck back until Thurs instead of Tues due to waiting on parts (clean bill of health, fresh oil & fluids), I lost the bobbin holder for my sewing machine and went to Walmart & JoAnn's with no luck (JoAnn's said order online or they can get it, but they're just ordering online...) and still need to sew the "mattresses" and the table runners too. Haven't even started on armor stuff, still waiting on a haubergeon I just ordered a couple days ago, I received my medieval padlocks that I need to install the hardware on the chests for (and paint black, freakin' HD chrome!). Still waiting on some soft kit stuff that's in the mail. Waiting on finials and some other tent stuff from Medieval Fantasies that I ordered earlier this week (that will need painting). Need to work up a rig to hang the gonfalon from, and possibly a banner too. Oh, and tent flooring, which I'm not even sure I'll be able to get to since that means getting the tent up again... and last but rather importantly, I need to find a cap for my truck. Of 4 leads on Craigslist, none fit, not even from another dodge a few years newer. The caps place in Purcellville doesn't have one, but one in Westminster MD does ... which I need to call and check measurements for, since it's for a newer dodge too. Purcellville could order me one, but at $1,299 I'll build one out of 2x3s and plywood........

Slightly stressing. :D

Breathe, breathe, it'll be OK. :)

Man, you're pulling out all the stops. My encampment really has nothing to show off, furniture wise. I'll have chairs and a weapon rack (maybe I can get the second one standing in time).

I think pooling our resources is a good plan.

Wax on, wax off .... Breathe in, breathe out. Always remember to breathe. Very important.  ;D Also, campaigning not camping. Keep it simple.

Definitely pooling our resources! Oh, should I bring the William Marshal gonfalon too?

I managed to get a truck shell. I finished the last of the staining this evening. I got the two "camp mattresses" sewn. I finished the last table runner. I *think* all the sewing, cutting, staining, etc, is done. I got the helmet to fit on my gorget by removing the padding from the neckline, also got the visor on my helmet modified with only slight cursing and throwing of tools for my fubar-idity. I just need to double-check the arms and maybe trim the vambraces, get the centering pin installed on my new greaves, and do a test run. Oh, and my haubergeon arrives on Wednesday .... preeettttyyy sure I won't have time to tailor it, so hope it fits at least half decent out of the box! I don't want to do the leather harness suspension for Living History, and I haven't had time to fix my voiders or sew lots of points to the arming coat... winter project? :D

Well with the Mayan apocalypse destroying the world on Dec 21 2012, I haven't planned anything. ;)

Sure, why not! I also have the sign from Sir Brian that we used in the VARF demos.

Right!  And seeing as my 40th birthday is set to occur after the apocalypse I am guessing it is safe to say I'll never be 40!  lol

So you'll die middle-aged like the rest of us, Sir William. Just live life as you usually do. If it happens, none here can stop anything cataclysmic or apocolyptic so.... no sense trying to avoid what's unknown, unpredictable, or uncontrollable. Beyond any of us. Just be safe about things until then. No hurry to get to 40 anyways, LOL :)

Yikes! The weather tomorrow @ MDRF is going to be a bit on the 'cool' side so I'm thinking of wearing my heavier gambeson under my heat leeching steel.  :-\

Lord Dane, you're right...why worry?  And no hurry on reaching 40...my point being that I never would so I win, right?  lol

I'm still hopeful that I'll be out there on Sunday.

Barring uncontrollable catastrophes like last year, yes. I haven't made a day this year yet from all of the Days of Knights prep work (and I still didn't finish!). Trying to figure out which day(s) everyone will be there so I can plan accordingly - looks like Sunday will be the day for me so far.

I'll be there both days this coming weekend (closing weekend). We might have a better turnout on Sunday, it's sounding, but I can meet up with folks on both days.

How about we plan our usual armor picture at MDRF? Say 1:30 @ a specific location? Any suggestions of a location that will offer enough room for us and not impede patron traffic?  ???

Well, some of the larger areas are the fountain near the gate, the portcullis outside the gate, out on the "fairengheti" near the Boar's Head or jousting area, and the open area between the food court and the White Hart. Of course there's always the fall-back of going over to Norm's encampment.
