Man, that looks like it was a blast. Great photos!
-
They actually fought on the battlegrounds at Wisby? That is entirely TOO cool, like the Agincourt one. Great pics, thanks for sharing. Did you attend, Ivan?
-
Wow, that's sick. We Americans need to import a medieval battlefield or something :P
-
Or how about we just all get together and have a grand melee like the days of old? Rebated edges on weapons but other than that, real steel. I have a few more years of that sort of activity before I'll need to make way for the younger generations.
-
Fantastic pictures! Thanks for sharing Ivan! :)
... I have a few more years of that sort of activity before I'll need to make way for the younger generations.
You only have a few more years? Man where does that leave an ancient codger like me? ;)
-
I apologize- that statement can be taken any number of ways based on your own individual perception. A few more years equates to less than twenty...as much as I should like it, I do not think I'll be sitting a horse in full armor at 70. But I shall try when that time comes. No, I was thinking more along the lines of the age 50, where I will be in a little over 13 years.
I figure my skills will start to wane then; whether I will it or no. :)
-
Great Photo`s Ivan, and not a sallet in sight. :D

NP there certainly was no offense taken, I was just ribbing you a bit! ;)
But 50! Yikes that means I've only got a couple of years left! :o
... oh and NO Sir Wolf I am NOT going to sell off my stuff because I hit mandatory retirement age! :P
-
50s not mandatory retirement age...just that I think it'll be mine. You see, I'm of smaller build, my body's not nearly as large or durable as yours Sir Brian. You look like you could still strangle horses for a living if ever there was such a calling. lol
-
Hey, Sir William Marshal was still unhorsing people in battle at the age of 75. I can only hope we can last as long. :)

hehehehehe

Awesome pics, things like this are why I want to move to Europe. Sure beats the SCA club battles with the stupid caged helms and inaccurate equipment like plastic armor and whatnot. I still wish they had this stuff here, I have yet to find a society that does this sort of reenacting in my area of the USA.

Well I don’t know about strangling a horse, although I have been wrongly accused of choking a chicken in my youth! ;D
– I know that reply was truly horrible and wrong but the temptation was just to great! ;)

Maybe we should think about doing our own event like this. Currently there is a small movement to get teams in North America for the Battle of the Nations for instance but there is nothing to say we cannot just have our own event with our own rules.
-
James, that is exactly what I'm talking about. You're part of a living history group, you and Wolf- do you think there'd be enough interest to field a good number of fighters to make it interesting?
-
Depends on what the rules and standards are. It is possible to drum up interest; remember even the SCA started out a few people in someones backyard :D.
-
Hmm an opportunity of hitting you fine gentlemen with steel? ...
I'm in! :)
-
That's the spirit, Sir Brian- its all about fun. Sure, there will be injuries, but what sport doesn't have that happen? They even get hurt playing GOLF, for the love of the Marshal!
-
I wouldn't mind helping make our own reenactment society for medieval battles. Sure would beat the club battles of the SCA or the boffer weapon battles with my friends >_> Though it would certainly be more... dangerous...
-
An excuse to hit people with weapons? Sounds fun. :)
-
Sounds like we're all in thus far...I say we move forward- lets do this! Doesn't Wolf have a tract of land we could use as a battleground somewhere out in the boonies (WVa lol)? I seem to recall him mentioning it as an aside...maybe when we were talking about the old VARF and its grounds. Hell, I'd be down for trying to hold it there...its more or less been abandoned, right?
-
Either locations can work and I will remind everyone that MASHS free play Sundays in Annapolis is available if anyone wants to work the rust out of their blade techniques leading up to any event we may eventually schedule. :)
-
You mean, I can come by and maybe get some practice in with you players?
-
Sure! Just make sure you bring your safety equipment. - i.e. Adequate gauntlets, a 3-weapon rated fencing mask and perhaps a chest protector and arm pads with elbow protection. If you don't have any of that then if you're not squeamish we can always take turns and share my safety equipment. ;)
We typically use aluminum wasters but some of us have steel and are willing to loan out blades.
-
You guys could do with getting used to wacking each other, and taking a few hits, for when you all join me on my campaign into France in a couple of seasons time ;)
Azincourt 2015......here we come !!!
;D ;D

Well as Sir Edward knows and can attest, I definitely have the "taking a few hits" portion down pat! ;)

I like the cut of your jib Sir Brian (or is that a little too pirate-ish lol)

I don’t think so! Let us not forget the battle of Sluys! Definitely a knightly battle at sea that certainly put those later ‘Golden Age’ pirate battles to shame! ;)

Wolf does have a big chunk of land, and it's even MORE boonies than my edge of WV lol. I would love to armor up and do some, dare I even say it, choreographed bits like they have on Youtube, based on the period fechtbuchs. It would be great practice for Azincourt. :D
-
;)
-
Great point Sir James...you knights ARE going to Azincourt in 2015, right? I plan to!

Sounds okay to me but I've heard rumors that Sir Wolf won’t validate parking! :D
-
LMAO @ won't validate parking
You mean, there's a parking lot out there too? I thought concrete hadn't been invented yet in WV. ;)
-
They truck it in from New Jersey ;)

What is the level of contact like at events like the one at Wisby? I notice that there are many soldiers with kettle helmets and open visors. This suggests that the face, and probably the head is off limits, would this be right? With that most of the spears appear to be pointing at the chest or lower.

It does depend on the group but most do avoid the head. At Hastings in 06 the head was a no no.

Wow, that's sick. We Americans need to import a medieval battlefield or something :P
Sadly, we only have those of the colonial era & Civil war at home. Let's invite the Brits back for another go around at retaking their colonies. LOL I'm sure the Queen would love to reclaim the old empire. Prolly still has some venom from when we lowly Americans kicked her ancestor's royal assets. We'll make it a medieval challenge to retake America. Tell them they can even bring the Frenchies along to make it more fun for us. :)

We'll just have to show'm how its done - AGAIN. ;)

They clearly didn't learn from the olympics. 8)

Do they ever? lol

Do they ever? lol
No. History repeats itself. :)
