Title: Greetings from "the new guy"
Post by: Magnus the Smasher on 2015-08-18, 13:14:43
Hello! My name is Brian, and I am the noob! I am also a 48yo aircraft handler from NY, who studies japanese sword and weapon art (jissen kobuto). I am a US Navy veteran and I am the proud father of a 16 yo daughter, who also studies the japanese sword with me.
I have always loved the medieval era and have made many cardboard and plastic suits of armor during my childhood. I took up the japanese thing for the exercise and cultural aspect, but I REALLY get into the medieval knight stuff a LOT more. If I could find a club near me, I would probably switch from the japanese sword art to the European sword arts, and my daughter even moreso than I... she's a nut for knights! We attend the NY Renaissance  faire  as often as we can during the season, and ALWAYS in garb. We'll be attending the festival in Ft. Tryon park in NYC this October as well. Hope to meet some of you there! Over to the Armory for a pic and description  of my kit, and please feel free to rip me a new one for my mistakes! :)

Welcome!  What did you do in the navy?  10 years helo bubba here, out now.

Where in NY are you?  There are a couple HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) clubs scattered about the area that someone here may be able to point you towards.

Welcome and well met!

We're pretty lenient here as to what qualifies as "mistakes." We have members here who do everything from casual RenFaire to super-accurate re-enactment; it all depends how far you want to take it. With that said, if you ever need help upgrading your kit, we will be more than happy to help you spend your money...erm...I mean, give you advice. ;)

Welcome. You'll find me at NYRF as well. It is my favorite place. :) I armor up weather pending but I'm always in some garb. You can hit me up. I'm from MASS.

Welcome. And I second asking where in NY are you? I'm sure we can find a HEMA, ACL, WMA, and/or SCA group near you.
