Title: VA Renn Fair
Post by: Sir Robert on 2011-04-20, 03:18:58
I was wondering when any of you are planning on VA this season, I went last year on a very hot day and would like to come this year with my squire but it would be more enjoyable with other knights, so what weekends are you thinking?

I am a knight in the NJ Ren faire this year and have been invited to be on casr in PA as well but will likly turn PA down.

We'll definitely have to coordinate some days! I can't go opening weekend since it's Mother's day AND my mom's birthday. Double-whammy. :)  Actually a triple-whammy, since she's also recovering from surgery.

Sorry to hear you mom needs to go under the knife Sir Edward! Her safe and speedy recovery will be the focus of my prayers today.

As for VARF I will only be able to make Sundays starting the 22nd unless I can manage to get Memorial Day weekend off then I can do both days that weekend. I intend to wear armor on Memorial Day weekend unless the weather turns too brutal for it! - i.e. 85+ degrees with high humidity.  :-\

I am sorry to hear that as well...I wish her a speedy recovery Sir Edward.

Memorial Day may be doabale, thats when we went last year but it was like 96, and I wore full plate that day and it was just brutal. I am doubting that mylady will come, she found the ride long, the weather hot, and the fair too small for her liking.

I will be at the Southern California Faire next weekend in full armor, I will represent us well I hope, then it seems that VA, NJ, PA, MD, then maybe TX if I am lucky.

I do hope to meet up with you Sir Brian, as well as Sir Edward soon. They had a very small faire in New Hope NJ last weekend, I was in FL though. I greatly admire those that try with these smaller fairs. It occurs to me we ought to do a bit of community service for them though, at least they appreciate it.

The fact is we draw a great amount of attention, the more of us together, the greater the crowds and the better for a faire, after all, its kind of us that the kids and wenches want to see, you all know the size crowds that four of us can draw. I am just imagining what a larger group of us would draw in VA- If we approached the Faire they may appreciate it, larger faires rarely do...sigh

My employment status is in flux due to potential financial reasons, so the next few weeks are going to be a 'hope and wait' time, so I'm avoiding any yay or nay road trip commitments until I get word of what's going to happen.

Sir Edward, all the best for a successful surgery and speedy recovery for her.

Thanks everyone. She just had a double knee replacement last week. It's something she's needed for years. But by getting it done now, the surgeons assure her she'll be dancing at the wedding. :)

Godspeed to your Lady Mother, Sir Edward...prayers have already been put to the Almighty.  If we're all going to go then I'm all for the VARF...just wasn't enthused about going solo.  I ended up going during Pirate weekend, yay me.  LOL

Stormdelver...that NJ one, that's what you sent us the link for right?  May 6-7?

I'm still not sure when I am going to hit VaRF. I missed the last couple years so I'm anxious to get back and see how it has grown. I'm on cast at PaRF as part of the Trayned Band, so I'm not sure what days I'll be able to swing, it looks like Memorial day is out because my wife and I have a wedding to go to, but I may shoot for the weekend before. The first couple weekends in June are booked with planned trips to Midsummer Ren Faire in the Poconos and the New Jersey Ren Faire.

Wait, there's a Faire in the Poconos?  Tell us more, Matt.  I used to visit during the summer as a kid and never had a clue...the best vacation spot EVER is Woodloch Pines, hands down.  In Hawley I think, right?  LOVE that area.

Google Midsummer Ren Faire. It's near Jim Thorpe, Pa. and runs the first two weekends in June. This is a very small faire and has only been in operation for like 5 years. Many of the venders, cast and organizers are veterans of the failed Medieval Majesty Faire in Williamsport, Pa.

Oh...timing's bad; unless it is stated otherwise, I think we'll head up to NJ?  Knights?

Well today is VARF's opening day for the season. I can't go this weekend, of course. But shall we plan an invasion day? How do your schedules look?

I'm looking at the possibly going closing weekend, June 4-5. Midsummer Ren Faire is not happening this year due to changes in the production company responsible for promoting and staging that Faire. This opens up that weekend for a possible VaRF trip as there will not be rehearsal for me at PaRF as well. Anyone else thinking of closing out VaRF this year? Also, any of you from down that way know of any cheap places to stay? The wife doesn't care for camping, she's not as CPH as I am, so a hotel/motel would be more what I am looking for. The closer to VaRF the better, too.

I'd be in for it...June 4-5 is open for me; I go to Cali the following week.

Sir Edward can probably point you to a few hotels/motels that're easy on the pockets and not too far from Lake Anna.

You know, I haven't looked at the accommodations in the area. I'd be just using google to point you to something. :)

Gents your best bet would to inquire with hotels in Fredericksburg as that is the largest town nearest to the faire with the largest selection.

I've stayed at the Fairfield Inn several times and it is very nice. :)

Sir Brian...great picture my friend....I do not recall that helm...a new acquisition?

Fredericksburg is a really nice town...w/friendly people.  I broke down once and ended up pulling off that exit...they were quite helpful, the shop and the rental place.  During Thanksgiving weekend no less.

I think we'll stay at the Quality Inn Thornburg. We stayed there a few years ago when we went and the rates online seem pretty cheap. It's not the most fashionable place, but that doesn't much matter to me. We're still trying to crunch numbers to make sure we can afford the trip, gas and all is putting a real crunch on the budget of late plus completing my kit for PaRF is making things tight. Upside is the breast and back are almost paid, then I just need to save up for the buff coat so I'm cautiously optimistic we can swing this too. It'd be cool if Sir Brian could make it so I could get a close look at his new overhauled kit before PaRF.

June 5 might serve us well as a Knighting Day as we are discussing in the other thread.  Also, I was thinking- who is to knight the Knight Commander?  Maybe we could make it so that Sir Edward gets knighted by the King of the Realm and he in turn could knight those of us who are adjudged worthy of the title.

What say you, Knights, Squires et al?
