Title: Leather cover on scabbard core
Post by: Sir Humphrey on 2014-01-29, 18:14:46
This is a follow up on the wood scabbard core photos I posted last week.  I finished the leather covering.  I'll dye it later after I get my buckle and other hardware from the caster in Ukraine.  I want to make the cuts for the belt before I dye.  I'm pleased with it, but think I can do better on the next one.  The butted joint on the back did not match prefectly and I got a little seperation near the top after it dried.  I'm also waiting on a bronze chape from Viking Shield that I hope will fit without much adjustment!

Look great!  I would never know that this is your first scabbard.  I'll take one in red for my Poitiers! :)

I can see why ready made scabbards cost so much, although I think some of the big names charge way too much!

Excellent, sir! I really like the tooling by the throat. Can't wait to see the whole thing finished!

For those of us who have worked with leather only once or twice, how would you rate the difficulty of this? Any tips/tricks? I want to make my own as I cannot afford a custom made one, but I only have very limited experience, though tools I have at my disposal.

Wilburnicus,

I've been working leather for 30+ years and have completed some pretty complex projects in the past.  This was not a big deal for me, but I think it would be challange for a beginner.  If you don't have to invest in tools, then I suggest you just go for it.  You have time to lose, and more you experiment, the better your products will be.

Mark, I can't quite see the stitch used on the back seam.  Is it a butted seam with a edge/grain stitch?

Looks quite nice, I know I'll need at least one new scabbard in the near future.  ;)

Ian, it is butted, but the holes are punched at an angle through the end grain.
