Title: Vikings (show)
Post by: Aiden of Oreland on 2014-02-27, 23:54:07
So a few days ago was the premiere of the new show Vikings. It almost had an Arn The Templar feel. Except these are ruthless vikings! I think it is definitely worth the watch. Since vikings are currently out of my period of expertise, I could not say how historically accurate it is. It is a show so there of coarse will be over the top situations here and there but overall its not too bad. The action sequences and special affects are good. There is some pretty solid story to it too. Again, check it out some time and as for me, I look forward to watching more of it.

You really don't want to know how much they got so very wrong.

Ya, I figured as much. I saw butted maille in there and a couple nit picks. But I find it amusing never the less.

Yep, this. Very much this. Don't look for history in a TV show or movie, unless it's a documentary. And even then, question it. :)

Most of what the History Channel puts out these days is purely for entertaining the masses. Sadly, Vikings fits that category.

How many episodes are currently out, 3? If so I think I have only seen the 2nd & 3rd one. I wonder, is this supposed to be a mini series or is it a full length show with multiple seasons planned?

This seems to be the case with most productions on any matter. But, they are always fun to watch. I know with mot movies I see the film first before I read what its actually based on. For good reason too. If I watch the movie first, I enjoy it. Then I read the book, and I enjoy it. If I do it the other way around I won't like the film as much. Except for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Don't watch those movies. They have the characters COMPLETELY wrong. Speaking of documentaries, I haven't watched any documentaries this month yet. Maybe I'll have a Mike Loades marathon or something. Maybe a few other things too.

Season 2 started last night; I didn't see it but I will eventually.  It's entertainment; I'd love for the History Channel to do real research but I don't get to make that call.

Yeah, they've been re-airing season 1 for a couple of days to get ready for season 2.

I enjoy the show, but as with most "historical" TV/movies, they get more wrong than right. It's best to enjoy it as pure fiction.

As Sir Edward said, they've been re-airing episodes from the first season; view it as stock Hollywood style entertainment and you can enjoy it as such.

I'd watch it, though I fear that in true History Channel fashion, ancient aliens named after the Norse gods are going to come down in their motherships and interfere with the plot, because...

Outlander?  Jim Caviezel as an off-planet visitor from an advanced civ crash landing on a planet whose inhabitants are 8th or 9th C era Vikings (for lack of a better term) yada yada yada pretty cool film.

Started watching season 2 on Netflix this week. Does anyone else think the writing is a lot different in season 2? The characters seem to suddenly have different personalities, the plot is easily predictable and the nail-biting danger at every scene is gone. Epps 1 and 2 are more like dressed up modern drama show episodes with a couple battles mixed in than the inspired tale of season 1. The only parts of the show that aren't predictable and boring are the battles. Or is this just me?

I can't see that picture so I think I'm missing the joke.  Who is to say we weren't planted here by some spacefaring race?  The earth is supposedly millions of years old but we can't go much beyond a paltry few millennia.  ;)

Wolf, there is another show/movie called Outlander about a woman who falls thru time and ends up in 17th Century Scotland (or Ireland, hard to tell by the accent) and I seem to recall reading a book of the same premise so its probably based on said book.  Had more of a romance feel to it (as opposed to the sword and armor medieval epics we all look for).

Probably Scotland, you know, Highlander/Outlander.

Well I've finally see the end of Season 2, and wow, what a reversal. At the beginning I thought it was kind of stiff and predictable but by the end it was some of the best storytelling I've seen in years. Pretty much every character has depth which is something you don't see in every show. Although it got off to a clunky start, I'm calling it my favorite show of 2014 so far.

I've been enjoying it too. After some of the events at the end of the season, I'm curious to see where they will go next season. This one definitely had a lot of in-fighting and politicking.

Yeah the sucked me in with some of the subterfuge of the characters. It was really well written! :)

Ah man! I have only been able to see bits and pieces of this season! I'm going to have to try and Netflix it. I saw an episode last week or the week before. It was the one where the shield maiden stabbed the guys eye and he got his head chopped off.

It really says something for the show that all the main characters have a deep and complex personality, and including several females roles that really shake off the common stereotypes. A powerful female character that you feel great respect for who is not mainly a sex object is so refreshing!

I think this is one of the great underrated shows these days. In my opinion, it's a better show than the more popular Game of Thrones series, which is really plagued with too many characters to split screen time with to give any sense of depth to most of them. Vikings seems to accomplish the perfect balance of show elements. Character growth, which makes a character seem more real, plot progression which drives the story along, fantastic sets to increase immersion, great looking costumes that although may not be historical look good nonetheless and lend a sense of character to the part, and the other usual elements such as great acting, writing and directing.

I agree Scott from what I have seen, the characters also aren't entirely predictable. Though there are some very over dramatic parts. Question, are blood eagles real or was that just made for the show?

Blood eagles are alluded to in the sagas.  There is little archaeological evidence that they were actually performed, so no one really can say for certain if they were just used in verse or in practice.

Personally, I've felt that Game of Thrones is the better of the two shows, but I'm really enjoying the high complexity of interwoven story lines, and the rise and fall of some characters that I didn't expect to see such growth from. But it's true, this is also the weakness of the series, since many characters die before we really get to know them, the bad guys usually win, and it has to jump around between half a dozen different groups of characters (or more) to keep the story moving.

Vikings is more focused, and the writing is decent. I do really appreciate the strong female characters as well.
