Title: Tapatalk support installed
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-07-07, 13:53:26
I haven't tested it yet, but I installed the plugin for the Tapatalk API. This means you can use the Tapatalk mobile app on your phone/ipad/whatever to access the forum. I'm about to try it out.

Anyway, I'll post their promotional message below...

Tapatalk is a forum app on the iPhone (http://"http://tapatalk.com/mobile.php#iphone"), Android (http://"http://tapatalk.com/mobile.php#android"), webOS (http://"http://developer.palm.com/appredirect/?packageid=com.newnessdevelopments.forums"), Windows Phone 7 (http://"http://www.board-express.com/") and BlackBerry (http://"http://tapatalk.com/mobile.php#blackberry"). Tapatalk Forum App provides super fast on-the-go forum access to majority of the discussion forums that has activated the Tapatalk plugin.

You mean I can browse the forum from my new phone?  I got a new phone for Father's Day and it is COOL.  Ever hear of 'Angry Birds'?  I'm too tied up by it.  lol

Yep, you just need to install the Tapatalk app. It's $2.99.

OK, I just tried it out. Pretty cool. You have to get used to its way of doing things, since it has its own interface. But it's a unified interface that works with a variety of types of forums, and sends compressed data back and forth on the back-end, so it should be faster on a mobile device than trying to use the web-browser.

But sure enough, it has a pretty easy menu to show you unread new posts, get into your profile info, navigate the forum subsections, etc.

I got the idea to install this since I got a newsletter from another forum I'm on that installed it. They mentioned alternative apps that work with the API (I think it all uses the same API, anyway)... Here's what they said (though their forum uses different forum software than ours does, so whatever you get, it has to use the Tapatalk API, or work directly with SMF forums):

APP LIST
There are a number of apps available for the typically available phones and devices. Some are free, some are pay apps. Here is a rundown of what is currently available.

ANDROID

Tapatalk Forum App ($2.99, one time fee)
    Convo Tapatalk Client (FREE)

IPHONE/IPAD

Tapatalk Forum App ($2.99, one time fee)
Forum Runner - vBulletin, phpBB, XenForo and myBB Forum Reader ($1.99 one time fee)
Forum Runner Free - vBulletin, phpBB, XenForo and myBB Forum Reader (FREE)
TouchBB Forum Browser ($0.99, one time fee)
    TouchBB Lite (FREE)

BLACKBERRY

Tapatalk Forum App, Public Beta ($2.99, one time fee)

WINDOWS PHONE 7

Board Express Pro ($2.99, one time fee)
    Board Express (FREE)

WEB OS

    Forums ($2.99, one time fee)

As you can see, there are some free and some pay versions of these apps. Remember, you get what you pay for. Free apps may not have some of the features you desire access to, so read reviews of them before installing to ensure you're getting what you want.

For the moment, Tapatalk is offline.

They started hounding me with emails about the plugin being out of date. Well yes, it was. It was over two years out of date, because updating it was always a nightmare, and I only barely got it working last time.

So it looked like they might have fixed the installation issues, and I updated it. Everything seemed to be working, until it started throwing errors for posting messages here through the website. It looks like it only partially installed, so I had to force a removal. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle anymore. As nice as the app is, the plugin for the forum has been nothing but trouble, and it's the only plugin I've had these kinds of problems with.

Is anyone still using it? If so, let me know.

I think I tried it once or twice and never bothered with it again. 99% of my forum access is on a PC, and on the phone, I just use the browser anyway.

Possible, sure. I don't know if anyone here does mobile programming though.
