Title: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-02, 20:23:53
OK, I tried making a poster sort of image:

(http://modernchivalry.org/posters/sir-edward-poster1_413x640.jpg) (http://modernchivalry.org/posters/sir-edward-poster1_775x1200.jpg)

Here's the original:

(http://ed.toton.org/photos/2009/weapons/b0472.jpg) (http://ed.toton.org/photos/2009/weapons/b0472b.jpg)

Notice I had to take out the tents, a tent shadow right next to me, add in the castle, etc. I also desaturated colors, added a glow around the white parts of me, etc.

Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-02, 20:37:27

I should add that parts of this were a royal pain, but I went overboard and could do less effort if I had the actual goal in mind. :) I completely isolated "me" from the rest of the background, slowly, by hand, since the background was noisy enough to make some of the other tools less practical. Ugh.

We need to do a bunch of photography in front of a green screen.

Promotional posters!  Put them up around town. :)

Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-02, 22:05:17
Heh, I made the mistake of saving the final PSD in the reduced resolution. I have a slightly earlier copy that I could maybe put into a printed poster if I re-do the white glow. I might have to check cafepress and see what resolution they need for small posters.

Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-03, 02:26:01
I just realized that if I want to put this up on cafepress or anything like that, I need royalty-free images instead of stuff I grabbed from google. There are many stock-photo sites out there where you pay a few bucks to download a high-quality image, then its use is royalty free. So I swapped out the castle for one I can use legally this way:

OK, cafepress trial premium storefront is up, though I haven't customized the look yet. This poster is the only thing in there right now, and I've placed a test order.

BTW, if you guys have some high resolution pictures that turned out really well, that are single portraits, let me know. I'd like to take a look and see what I can do with them. I think it would be cool to have a bunch of nice promotional posters or something. The key thing is that the picture need to be good quality, and not have too much other stuff in the shot that gets in the way. The best photos I have on hand are of myself and not you guys, usually, so I may have to rely on you all to show me what you have.

There's a good high res pic that's pretty much a portrait of me. Got the color version too but I prefer it in black and white.
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-03, 21:11:09
That's a good resolution, but I'd need it with color so I can adjust it as needed. I haven't tried an extreme close-up, but that can work too.

BTW, I took a shot at Sir Brian:

(http://modernchivalry.org/posters/sir-brian-poster_512x640.jpg) (http://modernchivalry.org/posters/sir-brian-poster_960x1200.jpg)

(the full resolution copy is detailed enough to see the eyes through the visor) :)

Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-04, 16:56:42

Excellent picture! Do you have a higher-resolution version? I can still work with that, it's just a little easier to get everything to look right when you use really high res, like right off the camera at 3000 pixels on the long edge or something. :)

I won't have time over the weekend, but I'll resume next week.

Wow those are great and that is an excellent picture Sir William!
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Ulrich on 2011-03-05, 01:26:02
Nice stuff, we should make a photo of all of our order members sitting at a table with our swords in front of us. Like a King Arthur round table sorta deal, but we'd have to do that at some kind of get together I think...
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop

That's one dangerous-looking Templar!
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Wolf on 2011-03-05, 14:19:25
i think what would have to happen is all of us take a picture of us sitting in a chair at a certain distance away. it would all have to be the same etc and lighting. that way Sir Edward could have us sitting behind a round table etc.  be cool to have him standing since he is the knight commander etc like he's addressing us hehehe
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-06, 23:50:30

Wow, yeah, getting the angles right would be hardest part of getting everyone to coordinate remotely to do a round-table picture. Everyone would need to get their protractors out and measure out the distance and angle of the chair, and camera height on a tripod, as well as the elevation angle of the camera. Tricky.

Or you could really get you picture taken at a historic site ;)

Me in my Norman gear at Battle Abby in England

Same gear at Bolton Abby:

You can also take images at a historic park like Sir Wolf and I did at James town:

Excellent. How are the weight restrictions on baggage on overseas flights? I hadn't considered flying with armor as a cost-effective alternative. :)
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: James Barker on 2011-03-07, 16:19:53
All depends on the airline, in 06 British air let us take 50 pounds each so maille, helmet, sword, and shield plus reenactment clothing came in just under 50 pounds ;)
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-07, 16:22:08

Yeah, that's part of my problem. I don't pack light. I can hit 50 pounds just with my regular packing, without adding armor. :)

BTW, the high-resolution versions of these are in that folder too:

http://modernchivalry.org/posters/ (http://modernchivalry.org/posters/)  (sizes are in the filenames)

The full size pictures are detailed enough to see Brian's eyes inside his helmet, and my sunglasses under mine. :)

Excellent. How are the weight restrictions on baggage on overseas flights? I hadn't considered flying with armor as a cost-effective alternative. :)

My plan is to mail my armor to the place I'm staying at in England a day or two before we leave, and hope that it arrives a day or two after we arrive. I'll have to see the estimated shipping time and plan accordingly. The first couple days will be Buckingham, etc, so I won't need any gear for that - I hope. ;)

Great job on the pictures! I haven't updated since Photoshop 7, and it looks like there's lots of neat new stuff. Once my rivited loose rings from IceFalcon get here, I can finish the rest of my gear and get a decent photo. Really cool!

BTW, the CafePress link is down for me.

Yep, I closed the cafepress shop before they started charging me for it. It was a trial premium shop. I can re-create it, of course, but I didn't want to start getting charged for it before I had anything more than a single poster in it.

OK, I worked out Sir William's. I decided to try a glowing "paladin" sword blade again. I made it pretty bright this time, but I think it works.

They really are cool.
Sir William is standing inside the southern part of the Barbican of my favourite castle, Beaumaris, in front of the "Torre sud-ovest" (South west tower) behind on the left, and the "Porta a Mere" ( gate next the sea) almost directly behind him.

You know sometimes it’s good to be green because it helps hide my envy of you Sir Gerard for being able to visit and run amok at some really cool castles!  ;)

– Man I’m missing all those castles I visited in Germany all those years ago in my youth!  :(

Au contraire my good Sir Brian. Although I feel very honored every time we are invited to stay and play in any of our castles, it truly is a small reward for living in this country. I would much rather be on your side of the pond ::)
But Germany !! That must have been a wonderfull experience seeing all those fantastically preserved fortifications. I would love to go there myself sometime.  ;)

BTW, cafepress shop is back up (minimally), and I'm adding all of the posters I've made so far. I've had to tweak several to fit the dimensions of the 16x20 poster. I'll keep this in mind better in the future. :)

Yeah I visited Neuschwanstein castle and of course nearby Hohenschwangau castle, Fortress Marienberg in Würzburg, and Schloss Johannisburg which was in the small town of Aschaffenburg where my unit was originally stationed out of before they moved 90% of it to a stark little rural community called Giebelstadt which was a just due south of Würzburg. I feel really fortunate to have been to so many historically rich locations in Germany. I would love a chance to go back and see them again.  :)
~ Ok, now I’m REALLY feeling nostalgic!  :'(

BTW again... anyone who doesn't want their photo in the cafepress shop can just let me know and I'll take it down. The intent here is to make the posters available to us, and I don't think we'll get much random traffic of people going in there to buy them otherwise. But I just wanted to make it clear that it's OK if you want me to take them down. :)

The poster I ordered from cafepress as a test arrived today. It's pretty nice! Completely professional look. I wanted to be sure, I've had some duds from cafepress before (years ago). But this came out perfect.

I'm with you 100%.  My lovely wife and I took a 2 week trip (before children).  We had nothing but our backpacks, open-ended Eurorail passes and a vague plan.  Visiting the Rhine castles from our temporary "base" in Bacharach, the ruins at Staufen, Munich, Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau, Prague, and Rothenberg ob der Tauber seems like just a dream now...

I long for the day when we can again spend an entire day laying on the hill above Bacharach, the Wernerkapelle ruins and Stahleck Castle at our back, sipping Riesling and simply watch the colorful barges work up and down the Rhine.

Nostalgia indeed!

Today's a good day for it. Overcast days outside provide some of the best lighting.

Another "BTW":  I updated the folder (http://modernchivalry.org/posters/ (http://modernchivalry.org/posters/)) to have copies of the 4:5 aspect ratio versions that I had to use for the cafepress shop, resized to replace the ones that were in there (and updated the forum posts here too). The difference is pretty minor, most notably that the images aren't as "tall".

Gahh! I cannot believe I missed this!
Pick your favorite.....

I really like the one at the bottom, but it's cut off at the top. The others might work, but it's tricky when the photos are taken in poor lighting and with a flash. I might have to see if there's some nice indoor backdrops I can use with them with a similar lighting angle or something. Dang, just noticed that part of the hammer is cut off too... it might be fixable.

Also, do you have higher resolution versions? I really need big pictures. :)

WOW!  These look awesome!  Sir Edward, we can order these?  I love the glowing blade...

As for resolution, maybe I need a better camera?  I meant to take pics over the weekend but the weather kind of sucked.  Still, maybe I can get it in this weekend if the weather holds up.  Maybe I'll do some shots in the rain for the hell of it...y'know, standing tall despite the storm.  lol

Sir Gerard, I do envy you your close proximity to these historical places...and things aren't so great on this side of the pond at the moment so be thankful you're not here.  lol
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-10, 15:34:14
Sir William, yep they're purchasable as posters on the cafepress page, in 16x20" size. I made your photo work, but that was only about 0.75 megapixels. Most cameras these days are between 4 and 12 megapixels. :)  It's possible that photobucket resized it down. (as an aside, any pictures you upload into the knight pages do get resized, but the original is stored for any future resizing, so we can use that as a mechanism to get them here).

Oh yeah, I encourage everyone to take lots of good pictures in interesting places. :)

When it comes to editing them into alternate backgrounds, it works best to have relatively neutral lighting (no camera flash, really heavy shadows, or overexposed blasted-out whites) and no obstructions or anything else that needs to be edited out before pasting the person into a backdrop (such as shadows on you from other objects).

For instance, if you have a photo with part of you that is obscured by another person or object, then that portion of you still has to be hidden in a new scene (see Sir Ulrich's, I had to keep him in the lower-right corner of the photo, because that's all there was to work with). Or if you have a patchwork of shadows over you from tree leaves, then any new background that's pasted in will also have to be a tree-covered scene with similar lighting.

Some people who are masters at photo-editing can completely remove shadows or change the angle of them. I might be able to tweak them a bit, but I'm no master at it. In the first post in this thread, I took out a shadow in the foreground in the grass by using the "levels" control, but doing that sort of thing on complex objects, such as faces, is an art form.

Since I'm still a novice at this, I'm still a bit limited by the source photos. :)

OOps

Sir William, Thank you for your kind words.
If I could afford to ship all of you guys out to Blighty I would do it in an instant.!!!!!!
I honestly feel that you could all do "so much" to bring these historic ruins to life.
When I write the scripts for our scenarios I try to combine "historic fact" with "entertainment" to teach and entertain our public ( mops). I always have the teachings of chivalry, and all that is good at heart, as I feel it is important to show our MOPS, and youngsters, the right way.......The difference between good and bad.....
We get a little complacent in our country, and forget our heritage somewhat.  ;)

Yup, got them! They don't take a real long time to make individually, but I'm only getting a few minutes here and there today. So I've started, and thought you might like to see the in-progress. First step is to remove the background (half done in this shot):

I made a tiny tweak to make the hairline against the sky look a little more real.

I think it turned out pretty well. It retained a lot more color despite still desaturating it a bit from the original photos. I had to make a fake sword tip since it originally went out of frame, and also used CS5's "content aware fill" to remove a car and a boat in the background. Heh. :)

A photographer sent us copies of a few pictures that he had taken at Caldicot last year.
One of my favourites is where I`m sitting outside our tent, mentally preparing myself for the tourney.

I have plonked it on the bottom of my knight page for you to have a look.

Apparently there had been something in the forground that he had to photoshop out but I really can`t see the modification  ???

Nice. :) If I had to guess, I'd assume there was something in-frame in the lower-right that looked out of place, that would have been easy to cover over with more grass. But who knows, without seeing the original.

I have a question about the stainless bottle...the picture of it looks white, is that just flash, or the wrong picture for the product?  I want a mug, a bottle and a poster- but need to take a better pic for the poster.  :)

It looks white to me too. The photos are meant to be "what you see is what you get", so I'll bet it's stainless with a white coating. I think the only ones that have unpainted stainless exteriors are those last 4 thermos items.

Wow, that's awesome Sir Edward!  My new desktop background!  Just had a thought- how hard would it to change up the pics so we all have the same surcoat on?  Was thinking for a shot of the Knights of the Order of the Marshal, in the Marshal's CoA.  Maybe each of us could do a single head-to-toe shot...what do you fellow knights think?
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-18, 17:50:16
Tricky, but not impossible. If everyone took a photo with a plain grey surcoat, it wouldn't be hard to color-adjust them. I say grey, since white and black run the risk of being over or under exposed to the point of losing the fabric texture and wrinkle details. And with other colors, it can reflect on other parts of the armor. So if one person wears pink and someone else green, and then I color-adjust them all to be what we want, your eye can pick up on subtle details that are hard to fix, and thus it looks "fake".

Then again, sometimes there's a lot you can do as long as the lighting's pretty neutral.
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir William on 2011-03-18, 19:23:15
Huh...plain grey surcoat.  Probably wouldn't be too costly...and then we could 'adjust' the image to liking; like all of us in Marshal CoA, and maybe other combinations as the shoe fits.

It's been a long while since I've fiddled with photoshop for anything non-work (see: fun), and I still use PS7 (5 gens old?), but you can "select" the surcoat, then adjust > desaturate and it will make the color (red, green, blue, whatever) turn to grey. It would work best with single-color tunics without a COA of course, it's possible, but a little meticulous. I'm not sure if the newer CS versions handle it better, but I'd wager 20-30 minutes per person of effort with poster-sized images. :(
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-03-21, 17:49:42
Oh yeah, desaturation or color adjusting is pretty easy. I suggested grey just to avoid over- or under-exposure in the camera (and as a solid color to avoid having to remove details, etc).

After posting in another thread about my "sword in the stone" wallpaper image, I thought I'd share how it went together. Here's the image again (clickable for the wallpaper-sized image), and the attachments are the images I started with:

(http://modernchivalry.org/pictures/photoshop/sword-in-stone-640px.jpg) (http://modernchivalry.org/pictures/photoshop/sword-in-stone-wallpaper.jpg)

The image is actually pretty heavily layered. I added a radial gradient that enhanced the color, putting an aqua tone in the lower left and a green tone in the upper right, but leaving the golden colors alone in the beams in the middle. There's a subtle dust layer following the sunbeam angles, and a glow around the glare on the rock and sword. Manually added some starbursts on the hilt. The rock's color balance is heavily tweaked (using three different tools) to make the grass color and illumination fit the theme a little better and take the blues out of the rock.

I could probably add it there. I forget what image sizes they need.

But also, if you click on the image, you get the full-size copy. It's always possible to take it to Staples or Kinkos or something and get a print as well.

I think BJ got her hands on a green background. I think I'll use it for maille (less reflection of green upon the armour) and black for the plate kits.
Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-04-03, 22:20:13

OK, we can try that. :)  In this last one, the background removal felt almost automatic. I only needed to make some minor tweaks around the edges instead of manually erasing the whole background. That's really what made it such a quick hack. After that I just adjusted color and contrast a little, stuck in a background, and added a blur to the castle. Poof, done.

Oh, one thing I just thought of to try to remember to do-- with a brighter, non-black background, it would be good to make sure there's some illumination on the background itself. That is, if you're using just a camera flash, it'll leave a black shadow all around one side (usually the right side) of the person, which details can also be lost into. There's a whole art to doing "studio lighting".

Title: Re: Fun with photoshop
Post by: Ian on 2012-04-06, 21:21:26
For a strong black and white image I think you really need to have an absolute black and and absolute white.  Real chunky contrast makes a B&W photo stand out.  I'm assuming you were going for the look of a low-key image (i.e. totally black background with properly exposed subject), so I retouched the background, and made the subject, stand out a little more.  Gray scale can look very flat if there's  not enough contrast.  Lemme know if you like it!  (photography is one of my many hobbies)  The gradient looks good to cast a shadow, but if it's a very subtle gradient, you'll lose your subject in the background instead of making him emerge from the shadow and stand out.

Oh, and btw, the Photoshop CS6 beta is available for 60 day trial for free right now!

Awesome, that does look better. The monitor I did it on initially made it look a little more contrasty, but you're right, it needed a lot more.

The surcoat really pops in that one Sir Edward!  Love it!

Thanks :) I think clicking for the larger size makes it look a lot better than the smaller inline image. I probably over-did it a bit, but there's something like 4 "levels" layers and 3 "curves" layers, all using gradient masks.

I haven't done much photography for its own sake; just enough to take some decent photos of my stuff, so I'm learning. :)

Or an Elderly Lord conversing with his Son, the future Knight and Heir to his Estate on Courtship and a certain Lady he was conversing a month earlier. Midst the conversation, the Elderly Lord praises his Son's interest in the Lady with the familiar saying: "Your Goat is roasting very nicely."

Sir Joshua...are there pictures to go with that post?  Otherwise, I am confused.

Do you not understand Pig Latin, Sir William?? Sir Joshua story bears no need for pictoral depiction when the words are so clear. Point of story: Have a piece of goat. It is quite tasty when properly cooked. :P

Goose, maybe? I've heard the phrase "your goose is cooked", but not goat. And I live in WV! :D

Well done Sir Edward, and I must say this looks like fun. Once I finish my kit I will join the "club" so to speak.

Fooling around with oil paint portrait effects.  Not entirely sure if the 'frame' adds or takes away from it.

That is a really cool effect. I'm not sure which version is better either. They both look really good.

that is an awesome effect Sir Ian!  I'm kind of squishy about the frame myself, maybe because it is digital, it automatically leads the eye to believe the painting is made that way too?  Man, I need to get some pics up of my kit ASAP.  One, for fear of Sir Wolf nailing me with my "probationary period is up Brother Patricius, here is your BAN!! Ye been warned!!"  ;D and two, so that maybe some of you can play with my pics as well.  All of those tricks turned out awesome, and I do love that oil painting technique.  It doesn't hurt that your kit Sir Ian is top notch to begin with.  I do think though the shading, particularly within the face makes it more a renaissance painting looking back on the 14th century, rather than a 14th century painting.  By the time DaVinci and them showed up paintings did become as nice and detailed as any of today's cameras can make.

In relation to the previous posts earlier about Bieber (now running around shaking the hex off :D) and so forth I bring you these:

Wow, that's a very nice effect. I'm thinking do that with some digital pictures, print them and frame them.

It'd be over mine if that were me in it- that looks fantastic, Sir Ian.  That's just a PS effect?  Might be worth looking into dabbling in it a bit.  That was very cool.
