Title: Encampment accessories
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-04-11, 18:15:58

So the DoK groun on facebook has me thinking... I really lack a lot of the kinds of accessories that one would need for a decent encampment. Furniture, candle holders, that sort of thing.

I have a 12'x15' panther pavilion, and not a lot else. I have one or two small wooden chests, the kind you might sit on top of a desk to hold quills or candles or something.

To get started, I just got this nice ultra-cheap ebay item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/220987217936 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/220987217936)

I plan to make a table at some point, and may look into some other furniture options. But I'm also limited by what I can fit into my truck.

What sorts of cheap and easy ideas do you guys have for fleshing out an encampment?

most benches/tables/chairs that i know of are all collapsible
need a chest to sit on and hold your stuff. even seen chests that are coolers.
but i would say:
a bed roll: wool blankets with a linen blanket. and a tick (its a linen or wool sleeping bag that you fill with straw)
a chest
a table
a chair for yourself and one other or a bench.
table cloth w/ long napkins
light source
weapons/armour table/rack/chest/stand not needed but nice.

but most the times i camp as a soldier all i have is straw tick and wool blankets. i throw all my stuff on it and at night i put in a wicker basket and cover the armour with wool to save from the dew.

With my wife joining the 16/17th century group I reenact with, I'm learning quite a bit about cooking and encampment equipment. She's doing a camp follower and will be responsible for cooking and period civillian demos, so she is doing alot of research on food, cooking, sewing, spinning, and other things women did in the camps and in general. So far we have some tableware, pots and other cooking accessories. I'm lacking table, chairs, benches and large tent as I never needed them before. I only recently added an A frame tent to my equipment, since I never really needed one. Now our unit is looking to do events where we will be setting up a camp and staying on site for the weekend, so I thought it prudent to at least have something to sleep in. I also got a couple wool blankets to use to sleep in. This year for School of the Musketeer I'm planning to go immersion, only taking period items to use for the weekend. Past years I've dressed period and used period tableware, but slept in a modern sleeping bag inside the forts casemate. This year I'll use the blankets on a pallet inside the casement. Hopefully I survive this experiment  :-\

I am so not ready for this aspect of re-enacting, although I wanna be.

Sir Matthew, just make sure it is understood that she is YOUR camp follower.  ;)

Yeah, the trestle tables can be exceedingly simple in construction. I plan to make one or two, probably more simplistic than the link above. Perhaps like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Medieval-Design-Trestle-Table-SCA-and-Renasaunce-Camp-/350479517038?pt=Antiques_Furniture&hash=item519a35056e (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Medieval-Design-Trestle-Table-SCA-and-Renasaunce-Camp-/350479517038?pt=Antiques_Furniture&hash=item519a35056e)

And a similar end-table:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Convience-coffee-trestle-Table-night-stand-SCA-Medieval-/350494830654?pt=Antiques_Furniture&hash=item519b1eb03e (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Convience-coffee-trestle-Table-night-stand-SCA-Medieval-/350494830654?pt=Antiques_Furniture&hash=item519b1eb03e)

I figure with some painting and/or staining, they'll look decent enough. However some sort of table cloth or runner might be good.

In the meantime, I also now have some Edward I era coin replicas on the way. I already have some eating gear (wooden bowls, wooden goblet, etc), but I may look into some eating knives.

Of course! She is portraying a German for our Faire season though ??? . There are so many Germans in camp, it's like a tiny part of the Empire has been transplanted in England  :o

Hmm, I've just got some bare minimum "feast gear". When I get some other non-hobby things handled, I'd like to get some of the bits and pieces, both for "camp", and for normal household use too.

I think a workshop day might be in order. We can chat sunday. I've got what I assume to be everything needed to make the tables relatively easily - table saw, circular saw, jigsaw, drill press, hand drill, chisels, palm sander, grinder - possibly projects for after VARF and before MDRF?

Cool, let's talk about that on Sunday. A build-day might be in order.

Also just ordered some lanterns:

Ooooohhh, I really like those! Perfect to hang from some posts around the yard for ambient night lighting. I bet I could rig up some kind of simple battery powered LED lighting so I wouldn't have live candles, too (dad = fire marshal & volunteer fire fighting for ~40 years = live fire is a no-no for me).

A writing slope, parchment, ink and quills always looks good too  ;)
All the items in these photos, from when we dressed the room at Caerphilly, are usually displayed in or around our tent. ( check out both pages)

Nice! Some of those photos are really great!

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'm looking into chests, including some smaller table-top ones. Candles and table cloths are always an obvious choice as well.

Well this post has got me thinking about encampment supplies.

I am more keen to take on Sir Matthew's encampment ideas and I would seek to get the essentials before adding the nicer things.

I survived using just blankets last weekend at School of the Musketeer. The wooden pallet bed was hard, but not uncomfortably so, at least I didn't think so. I put one blanket under me, and two over me and I laid my two cloaks on top of that. I wanted the cloaks handy if I got cold and decided I needed to curl up in one, which I didn't, but I did keep on my soldiers coat too. We let our fire go out the second night, since we were all too tired to tend it, but I was still warm enough. Yesterday I was at the Market Fair at Fort Frederick and picked up a latern. It works for 16th-18th Century, but is probably not useable earlier. Other than a small tin personal light, it's the only lighting I have. With us begining to branch out into overnight camping events, I thought I might want something a little more to light the way to the priv and around the tent. Still on the list are some cooking equipment and sewing related things for the wife. She picked up a pack basket to carry some of her things and a fire starting kit. Neither of us had given that much thought until we were ready to start the fire last weekend and realized we lacked anything period to do so, not a good time to figure that out.

Awesome! I've been debating on doing some overnight camping at a few events this year and/or next year, but lack basically, everything for it, including a tent. Glad to hear you got through it unscathed, and sounds like you had fun too!

Here are the lanterns and oil lamp I got. I threw a gauntlet in there for scale. Man, the gauntlet looks huge in the photo. The oil lamp is palm-size, definitely small.

Sir Edward that is quite amazing how small these lanterns and lamp are in comparison to your gauntlet.  Why I would use a Gauntlet instead of a ruler to help hang my lanterns or lamp.  ;)

I'm heading back down to Market Fair at Fort Frederick tomorrow. I saw a Doglock Musket I want to pick up Thurs., but I didn't have the cash with me, so hopefully it's still there. I'm taking a little extra with me in case we find any camp items we need. With AHEC and the 17th Century Colonial Plantation events at the end of May, my wife and I find ourselves scrambling to make sure we have at least the essential camp gear covered.

Sir Matthew!  While you're at purchasing the awesome rifle, please find where I can find a decent or awesome wheel-lock pistol.   ;)

When I get my wheellock I'll let you know ;) . I badly want one, but so far the only two places I know selling decent ones are a guy in Poland who makes one a day it seems (but wants upwards of $900 for one) and Loyalist Arms in Canada. Loyalist want $650 I think and my understanding is theirs are chain driven, as period ones were, and this is what you want in a wheellock. I am planning to get one at some point. If you want a snaphaunce, John Buck makes a nice Scottish snaphaunce, but be prepared to wait about a year and half for it  :o

Interesting list. I've gone a bit further on my battle tent ... so far consisting of:
1.) Hammock w/ head roll
2.) 2 armored chests (for clothing, essentials)
3.) Armor stand for full-plate
4.) Weapons stand for assorted armoury - pole weapons, longswords, etc
5.) 2 Wooden Folding Chairs
6.) 1 Wooden Folding Mini-Table w/ Adornments
7.) 1 Vigil-Shrine-Altar for Religious Ceremony
8.) Cooler for Thirst-quenchers
9.) Candle/Torch Holders
10.) 10'x10' Canopy Battle Tent w/ the trimmings (Paracords, Weights/Supports, Mesh Lining, etc)

Can you think of anything else I might be missing??
