Title: NJ Ren Faire
Post by: Sir Robert on 2011-03-22, 15:38:05
The NJ Ren Faire is on June 4, 5, 11 & 12 in Columbus NJ, a bit south of Trenton. They are looking for volunteers and I am now tasked to see how many of my fellow Knights would like to be in the Cast with me. We would fufill the roles Knights, but parts yet to be determined. Singing and dancing are not required, just your kit and best foot forward to represent chivalry! What could be better? :)

This is sort of what I'd been talking about in another thread, for the MD Ren Faire.  I could definitely do a weekend, not sure about both...this would be a great first meet and greet for the Order as well.

How is the NJ Renaissance Kingdom doing these days? I've only been once, back when Sir Wolf and I went up there. That was back in... what... 2000? It was a very small faire at the time. Has it grown over the last decade?

Most excellent idea! It would make a great first meeting, and for a great cause as well. I would really like to see this Faire succeed since is so close to me and at a fairly empty time of year. That they are willing to accept our support is a good sign and could really build a great realtionship between two new organizations. One weekend, one day, anything we can spare, I think we need to be a bit organized though so we have a good showing each day to support the needs of the Faire but we are on our way!

Completly different people running this:

http://www.njrenfaire.com/Home.html

They are from the PA Renn Faire, not associated with it, and so are most in the cast. They held it last year during the MD Faire season and it was very sucessful as a first time faire. This year they will have 4x the merchents (about 40) and plenty of support from friends of various Faires. I don't have a lot of information yet, just talked with one of the organizers today and offered my help prior to the Faire, helping organize or whatever as well as being part of cast. They were interested in our group as well and I thought we could help each other and we could make this a great experience for all.

Ah, a new, unrelated faire? It sounds great. :) Looks like it's a bit closer to us in the DC-area too. That's a plus.

Definite plus...maybe debut the new Order to the world, then?

I was hoping to get a helm and gauntlets from ArmorAndCastings before the season started, but apparently they aren't doing any armor right now. :( A weekend might be possible for me, but both is probably out of the question since it's at least a good 5+ hour drive each way, and the cost of gas/room would be a fair chunk unless we carpool/room share.

I'd like to get a chance to visit but I won't be able to volunteer either. This will be coming right on the heel of VARF's season, so we'll have to see how the schedule works out.

Sir Robert I am pretty sure my fae wife and I will be able to make the last day only.  :)

Do you know what their weapon policy is?

Excellent question, Sir Brian- knowing that would definitely make my decision easier.

I believe that we were going to be expected to be armed, they are looking for us to more or less be ourselves from what I am told so far. I can offer to break things up for you, I live in Swedesboro, NJ about an hour south and I could offer accomodations.

Well then...I gotta start trying everything on again to make sure it all fits.  And I need to run down some outstanding commissions as well.  I think this'll be great...only the second faire I've been to that allows weapons.  I should qualify that by saying I've only been to two others, VA and MD.  VA was just too damn hot for me.

VA was just too damn hot for me.

It can be, but that's why they're starting a little earlier in the spring this time. This year it runs through may and a little into June.

Thank you kindly Sir Robert for the offer however I’m not sure if we’ll drive up Saturday night and stay over or get up uber early and drive up in the morning since it opens at 11. We won’t really know until it is closer to the actual date. :)

It is what, a 3 hour drive for most of us?  I can do that on a Saturday or Sunday morning...think I'd rather do a Saturday, just so I can rest up on Sunday because I know I'll need it.  lol

I will have more details after Saturday this week as I have a cast meeting. They are aware of our group and have been very receptive to us, the organizer is a Ren Fair performer (Dandy Pirates) you may know of whom I refer as they have played in the VA Faire, in fact they may be this year I am not sure yet.
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire

Very cool, I'd just asked about this in another thread.  Apparently I was mistaken on the dates...it isn't until June, right?
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire
Post by: Sir Robert on 2011-04-24, 11:30:18
My first cast rehersal and it was scary and a bit disappointing, the directors have not decided how to use me yet as my armor is far more advanced than anything they have, the actors playing knights there may only be in surcoats. I am waiting to hear back but I may be the personal guard of the Earl.

So this fair is the first two weekends of June, it will be small, so like VA, but has a great cast and is dedicating much of their time to street performance- interacting with the crowd. No formal weapons policy yet...so still waiting to see if they create any but last year they really didnt have one- one down side- no beer or wine (or at least that I am aware of).

Small is fine, as long as you have a strong cast performance. And it will build a reputation for that VARF is known for having a strong street cast and good character interaction. So it sounds like the faire is on the right track.

The beer/wine thing can be a limitation, since alcohol is always a huge draw. But there are other dry faires out there too, I think.

Sounds like it's coming along. :)

What other dry fairs?  Please post so I know to avoid, or, if we're all making an appearance, I can bring my own costrel full of wine.  Not that vinegar his majesty serves either...the good red Burgundian!  lol

Stormdelver, let us know as soon as you do about the weapons policy, it'll make a difference I'm sure.  First-time rehearsals almost never go well, especially with a diverse group of individuals who may not have ever worked together before.  I think it'll be fine...too bad they won't let you ride around on horseback, eh?  That'd do just fine for me.  lol

This is looking good, since I am in the state (only north east of the actual faire)  I might be able to stop by there and maybe catch you good knights!  (although I won't be in full harness though sadly)

Sadly, I don't know. :) I just seem to recall running across it before in browsing the websites.

Ah, that's a shame...I would avoid a dry faire like the plague.  I could be persuaded, however.  ;)  You know, if we were all going to make an appearance.
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire

Truly I enjoy imbibing as much as the next knight, yet in high heat index and armor circumstance I typically avoid alcohol since it only hastens dehydration.  ;)

Well, that's not hardly authentic, is it Sir Brian?  We're supposed to be wining and wenching while on campaign...yet you would abstain?  Methinks you took the Cross, perhaps unknowingly?  ;)

Well regrettably I will not be able to make this event! Starting the 12th I've been compelled by the busy workload at my job to commence working a crew on Sundays for the next several weeks. I typically do not have to be there every Sunday but I need to be present for the first couple. My apologizes for not being able to attend this event!  :(

Post by: Sir Matthew on 2011-06-02, 18:01:36
I'm likely heading to VARF on the 5th, provided I can shake whatever nasty intestinal bug I have come down with. I went to the Dr. yesterday (yes, it is that bad and I was that desperate to get over it) and he ordered some tests and put me on an antibiotic as a precaution until the tests come back. I may be down for the NJ Faire the following weekend, probably on Sun. the 12th. Maybe I'll run into someone from the boards then?

You looked well, Sir Matthew....the antibiotic must've worked!

Sir Ulrich...sometimes you can have the most fun on a solo excursion...but I do agree, the camaraderie's always fun to have in such a setting.

done! hahahha. i can make the lists and everything out of material thats already there.

i've always wanted to do a hart hunt as well (un armored) hmmmm (well hart being a deer, but seeing that pouching is illegal it would have to be a fake hart hehehe)

We could always do hart hunt during the regular deer season...the enormous boar spear season starts just prior to bow season doesn't?  ;)

I was glad you were able to make it! It always seems like when we cross paths at the renfaires, one or both of us are running off somewhere. I was glad to have you join us on a more relaxed day.

Yes, it was very nice to get to spend part of the day with all of you. It was also really nice to finally make it back down fo VaRF. It's been about 5 years since I was there last and things have really changed. The faire is alot bigger and the both the shows and the cast have really improved. I was really impressed with the militia encampment, they have alot more members and equipment. We're hoping to make it down a couple times next year.

It was a very nice faire and I had a great time. Saw alot of people I know from PaRF, current and past actors. My kit was a huge success and thanks to the kindess of Sir Ulrich and his father I was able to look at some pics of myself and see that the bow and quiver went well with my armor. Even if I can't shoot for a damn I still look the part of an early 16th C English archer.

Looks like it was a beautiful time had by all...I would've liked to have gone.  I should've looked to see if anything was going on in Cali but I was having such a great time with my nieces that I feel like everyone ELSE missed out!

I'd like to check it out next season though as I've never been and would prefer any faire that allows you to carry your weapons.
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-06-15, 15:49:54

Well, both of the PA faires have their seasons in the latter half of the year, and they allow weapons. There's PARF, and also Pittsburg.

The Pitt faire is a bit of a haul from the DC area, but it's a charming little faire. It's not huge, but has a nice look and feel, and their jousting show has a lot of showmanship.

I like PARF. I just wish they didn't have so much pavement on the site. But then again, it probably makes it more handicap-friendly. The entrance fees are a little higher than I'm used to as well.
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire
Post by: Sir William on 2011-06-15, 16:19:02
My sister said that PARF would be one I'd like to visit...she hasn't been to the Pitt one and yes, it is a bit of a haul to get up there from our area.

When's PARF start?  I'd almost prefer to go to that one instead of MD...although I'll go to MD at least once this year...more if you lot are going to be present.
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-06-15, 16:40:00

I think PARF's season is usually the same as MDRF's, but starting a week sooner (in August). I only get up there once every couple of years or so. MDRF on the other hand, I do the season-pass thing.
Title: Re: NJ Ren Faire
Post by: Sir William on 2011-06-15, 17:43:28
Matthew once said to me, when we first met that the MDRF seemed too much like 'dressing up in costume' because w/out a sword, that's essentially what it was.  Now that I AM a Knight, however...I'm always armed, even when my hands are empty!

So I guess it won't be as bad...
