Title: RenFaires 2014 Season
Post by: Sir Douglas on 2014-07-06, 03:53:55
Thought one of these threads might be useful since the summer/fall season’s starting soon.

For what it’s worth, the Great Lakes Medieval Fest starts up next weekend. Not sure yet which weekend I’m going to try to make it out there; possibly first or second weekend. I realize I’m kind of the only one who’s relatively close to it, but just putting it out there anyway. :)

I also plan on hitting at least PARF and the Pittsburgh Faire again this year. MDRF is a big maybe.

Feel free to add and expand on this, gents.

I'll be hitting the Kansas City Ren Faire at some point. It runs from August 30th through October 13th. Pretty good sized faire.

We are usually at MDRF most weekends. I usually make it there for about 15 out of the 19 days. Of course, if we do Days of Knights, there's a weekend I certainly won't be around.

I don't make it to PARF every year, but sometimes I plan on going on the opening weekend, since it usually opens the weekend before MDRF does. But later in the season can also be more appealing, since August on a paved faire site can make for some unappealing temperatures.

Well I can certainly add to this listing:

July 19, 20: Hammond Castle (www.hammondcastle.org (http://www.hammondcastle.org)) Medieval Faire - Gloucestor, MA. (Definitely going)
Aug. 2-Sept 21: New York Ren-Faire (www.nyrenfaire.com (http://www.nyrenfaire.com)) - Tuxedo Park, NY. (Absolutely going - My favorite)
Aug. 2-Oct. 26: Pennsylvania Ren-Faire (At least one weekend for certain)
Aug. 23-Oct. 19: Maryland Ren-Faire (Depending on Order attendance schedule)
Aug. 30-Oct. 19: King Richard's Faire (www.kingrichardsfaire.net (http://www.kingrichardsfaire.net)) - Carver, MA. (A must just for convenience - My usual faire)

I will be missing opening weekend of MDRF as I'm going to a wedding. I will make that Sun/Mon Laborday weekend for my first visit. I don't know if I'll make PARF before MDRF this season.  :-\

PARF- First weekend
MDRF- Not quite sure. I am pretty sure I will be there the final weekend. I know I will be there before that but not when.

I'll likely be getting a season pass to PaRF and will be there most weekends when my reenacting unit isn't doing events. I have decided to forgo my Henrician kit till the spring, so I will be an abomination. I will be using this as an opportunity to bring out some kits I don't showcase as much like my Border Reiver kit and some kits I'm still working on, like my Ironsides ECW kit. Of course, my Pikeman and Musketeer kits will also blend in. I'm hopefull to make MdRF, but alas the weekend I was shooting for we have scheduled an event, so that may not happen again this season.

Surprise!  I would like to extend the invitation to the Ren-Deus-Vult event to be held the first weekend in August at the Bristol Renaissance Festival. For anyone who wants to adopt a "Habit" (the attire of a medieval warrior monk of the Crusading period: 1099-1565), or in my case can't kick one, Crusaders from all around will be gathering for the weekend. It used to be held at Fishers in Indiana, but now we're roaming and trying to reach out to others.

See you there! To not attend would be a sin.  :P :D ;)

That's the weekend of August 2-3? I have another event that weekend, unfortunately. Otherwise, it would be great to make it out to one of these.

There's rumor that a larger than normal contingent of Teutonic Brethren will be on hand.

Safe travels all the same.

Isn't Bristol Ren-Faire the sister one of the NY Ren-Faire?? I believe it is. Too bad I'll be in PA Ren-Faire then.

I’ll be hitting the Minnesota Renaissance Festival (http://www.renaissancefest.com/) a few times this season.

It runs August 16th through September 28th this year.

I will be going to PA ren faire first weekend as well to meet up with some of the order. I havent been to that one since 2006 when I was pretty crappy as a "reenactor" if I could even call myself that. Will be looking forward to it and if I can possibly get him to come I would bring my friend Elliot along with me.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.  We all have differing paths to our own personal goals.

Ask yourself the question “Was I having fun at the time?”

Absolutely! And remember it's a renn faire, not living history. There were probably people with wings or bunny ears or vampire fangs there... so you were probably worlds above that.

Still the question that, as a reenactor, you should always be asking yourself first is:

Have I properly educated the public?

That was before I knew much back in 2006 when my idea of the middle ages was the movie Braveheart and the game Medieval Total War. I am a bit harsh on myself I will admit but it's cause I look back and cringe at my past and only like looking into the future more so.
Thats the exact last time I was there in October 2006. Pretty much fine for a ren faire but... living history I can forget it. I didnt know any groups or had any standing anywhere so I didnt learn much between 2005 to 2009. Didn't have much fun in the past at ren faires either due to being socially inapt at the time and so awkward I had no way to talk to strangers or make friends.
This order plus Days of Knights really changed that and now I can do those things just fine now no problem. I hope this second time I go to will be looking up, which I am quite optimistic about meeting up in August. Now that I am bettered a lot more I bet I will have a lot more fun plus meeting more of the order. Probably will be better than the NY one where Elliot and I were the only 2 living history people there in a sea of Rennies. I am just going to bring my knightly outfit and dont have to pack too much like I do for DoK though my mother told me she wont be going to the faire itself so it's just gonna be me and if he comes Elliot, meeting up with Aiden and Nate. If James, his squire and Nathan Quarantillo come to it that would be nice as well though.

ren faires aren't for history. they are for family drinking hanging out fun time with a medieval flair. shows, characters, venders are all great and have their places. historical? not in the least lol. I started to think like you there for a while till I realized it's just for fun and no one knows differently anyways.

I started out with that exact same green shirt. And studded vest thing. And pants. Heh, boots look like the ones I have, too. XD

I wish I was able to meet up with you guys at PARF. Tried to switch reservations around and such, but no go this late in the year. :( Good news is I'm registered for DoK, so it looks like I'll be going, baring any unforeseen circumstances.

Going to Hammond Castle tomorrow with wife & step-son. Was going to wear Templar attire as it is a 12th century style castle but we will see. If I wear armor, it will just be riveted maille with padding and spurs, plus adorning mantle. I'll go as Living Historian for this one. :) Lots of pics.

Hit up the Great Lakes Medieval Faire this weekend. It alternated between drizzle and rain the whole time Saturday, so it was a soft kit day. It more or less cleared up Sunday, so:

I'm hoping to be at PaRF both days this weekend, but there is a chance I may have the opportunity to some OT, so if that happens I won't be there Saturday. Gots to make the cash to pay for the toys. Weather is looking iffy for Saturday, so I may do a soft kit of some variety, possibly Musketeer. Sunday things are looking better weather wise and a buddy of mine is planning to be there so we may turn out in our Border Reiver kits.

Sir Brian it will indeed be a great honor to again see you, and since I am a patron spend more time socializing. Perhaps even over one of the fine beers brewed by SBC. I am sorry to be missing what looks to be a fine gathering on Saturday, but as I said gots to make the cash to buys the toys, and OT has been pretty sparse of late. Thanks to a converge of opportune factors, it looks like there is a pretty good chance for more OT next weekend! Back to back OT hasn't happened in months so while it means missing another day of Faire, I am still elated to possibly get the opportunity at more cash. Perhaps our paths shall cross in Maryland, Naythan, I am tentatively going to schedule a trip there the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend, but that is very tentative at this point.

I'll be going and bringing both my soft kit and armor. My dad will be with me and he will act as the camera man for us. If it rains I will be in my soft kit if it clears up I will dress in armor. Most likely I will just wear my hauberk coif and madeln helm with my heraldic surcoat and be using my Reeve and possible my shield. I will need to borrow one of you as my squire to help put on some of my stuff.

This is why I really like my Brigandine. It buckles in the front so I can put it on myself. My Almaine Collar is a little tough, but I can put it on myself as well. My Breast and Back is a lot more challenging without help...

So how did it go?

Wonderful day. Ulric luckily found us when we arrived and then we just spent the day walking the fair grounds with him. We ran into some Templars and 14th century Doctors. We also met Lord bailey also known as Sir Brian.
Was a fun day.
We also told Sir Brian to say hi to Our Sir Brian for us on Sunday.

I had a good time, though I was wandering in the faire in full armor and because of walking uphill and downhill many times in full kit I could only wear my armor for 3 hours that day, plus the heat got to me along with not having much to drink. I may get a new layered linen Gambeson as a result but my comp Broke and I gotta replace the harddrive so thats eating my wallet up. I did luckily meet up with Aiden and Nate and we had a really good time, we got along rather well and ran into some reenactors. I even bumped into a few guys who knew who I was via Google images. My dad took tons of pics but my computers broken and I have to get it fixed so... it will be delayed unless my mom makes a shutterfly album.

I'm sure there will still be a few pagans left at Bristol that need a good "converting". ;)

Speaking of being a week late for the get-togethers, I'll be at PARF this weekend. The Teutonic kit is coming, though I'm not sure yet if I'm going to do Teutonic both days or do one day with my secular kit as well, provided it doesn't rain of course.

I saw Sir Brian on Sunday and it was a pleasure, as always. The pity was we ran into each other at the archery demo and never managed to reconnect. I'll be at PaRF again this Sunday, but I have not decided on kit yet. I my go simple, 17th Century Musketeer, since the weather isn't looking great.

My apologies for that Sir Matthew.  :(
I eventually went back to the car shortly after leaving you and having a couple of beers. My wife wanted to do some shopping and I just couldn’t keep up with her and decided to take the armor off and switched to my soft kit. That day I learned my limit for weight and heat as the coat of plates and humidity was my ultimate downfall.  :-[

I had the same problem with a coat of plates at DoK 2 after wearing it for a few hours I had to take it off. I mostly just go in plain maille now. Just maille alone I can go hours in if the weather isnt too hot. I may just go with a new layered gambeson to replace my puffy black one that has cotton felt inside. It's just too hot in the heat honestly and I needed to drink huge amounts of water.

It was great to see Squire Douglas yesterday at PaRF, as well as Sir Brian's wife. Too bad Norm was there the day before, but maybe I shall run in to him later this season or down at Carolina, if I make that. I know he is not going to be at MdRF this season. It is looking like I will be working Saturdays for at least the remainder of August and probably a few in September, so I doubt I will make to MdRF this season. I will, however, continue to attend PaRF on Sundays unless I have a reenactment that weekend.

So I ran into Norman Cary at PARF today and we talked for a bit. Really great guy. :)
Heh my mother was at the parf today as well . She ran into Sir Brian's lady.

Anyone have a sure date set for when they are going to the MDRF?

If anything, closing day.

Campaign report from Bristol Renfaire!

I've driven past the Bristol site for years, on the way up to WMAW (which is about 30 minutes further up the road, past Bristol), but had never attended. My wife and I both wanted to see this faire, having heard good things about it for years, but this year we finally had a real excuse, since one of the VARF cast members moved up there this past year and is now on cast at Bristol. So we decided to visit and surprise her, which worked flawlessly, since the surprise actually drove her to tears of joy. :)

I'll post pictures later, as I want to run them through photoshop quickly first, but here's a run-down of how the weekend went.

Arriving, we decided to take the advice we were given, and pay for the preferred parking. They have plenty of free parking, but it's way off to the sides, beyond the cast and staff parking. The "preferred parking" puts you right up near the gate, and costs $5. It's well spent, in this case.

We followed the directions of the parking staff, and arrived to find some cranky patrons trying to send everyone back in some other direction, claiming they were in special parking that cost them $110, and we shouldn't be there. The staff came over, and redirected us to just park. Cranky patrons. Lovely.

The weather report was claiming 79 for Saturday and 81 for Sunday, so I decided to armor up on Sat. The weather people lied. Saturday ended up being quite a bit warmer than that (and Sunday was only about 75). I should have been clued in by the amount of salt I was tasting from my own face, but I just thought I was out of shape when I was getting winded quickly by walking around the site (since I've been staying off my knee after the minor injury at Longpoint). But no, it wasn't that. I was already dehydrated, less than an hour into the day. I dropped my helm and shield in the car, and it wasn't enough. I needed to lose the gambeson too. So by about 2-3pm, I had switched out to the aluminum mail over a linen shirt, and only then was I able to catch up on hydration and cool down a bit. And then stomping around the site was no longer making me want to sit down every 50 feet.

On Sunday, we wore our nobles, and ironically were very comfortable all day in them.

The faire itself is very nice, and is about the same size as MDRF. The structures are styled very similarly, with a look and feel that reminds you of MDRF at almost every turn. It's very shaded, with plenty of tree cover. But there are plenty of notable differences.

The site had a wooden bridge over a pond, it had rides, and some fighting games (popping balloons off of each others heads with fencing sabers, foam-sword fighting, etc). The joust was quite excellent, and they had a falconry show.

It's a historical faire, with a very historically-minded Elizabethan court. And yet, they also had fantasy elements on cast, including fairies. In fact, Sir Brian's lovely fairy would have felt right at home, as they had a miniature fairy village, a fairy shop, and a spider-web bordered fairy glade.

The Elizabethan cast were very good to us, knowing we were VARF people, and even drew us into some of the courtly activity when we were in our nobles.

And the shopping was very good as well. Of course they had plenty of the typical shops you see at faires, but also a few that you only see in a few places, such as Music of the Spheres (makers of fine musical wind chimes), and also A&A had their booth there as well. We handled many of the sharp pointy (and blunt bashy) toys, but didn't take any home at the time (the sales tax would have been a trade-off with saving on the shipping anyway). They also had other weaponry shops, including one that had the typical CAS-Iberia stuff, but also Sabersmith and Starfire.

We caught several of the shows, including the joust, falconry show, Steele Sisters, By the Sword, Whiplash, Dirk & Guido the Swordsmen, several of the courtly events, some of the music, etc.

Something we were very impressed with, was the size of quality of the cast. They had a huge cast of villagers/revelers, and quite a few musicians. And they all had their act together. In some ways, we felt MDRF could also learn a few things from this faire.

It's a shame it's so far away.

Who's headed to MDRF and when?  Brian/Ed are you still going every wknd?  We should try and muster the Order for a showing (and weather permitting of course).

I'm still a hopeful for closing day, but that is likely to be the only one if I can get to Days of Knights. If I can't get to Days of Knights, first/second weekend in October I'll also try to go to MD Renn Fest.

I'm still going more often than not, but this season will be a little hit-or-miss. I have some conflicting events, and my wife and I are also sometimes just not bothering to go if we don't like the weather, or just aren't in the mood.

So I'd say it's probably a good idea to give us a head's up when you're thinking of going.

Right now I am looking at the 11th and 12th of October. Or the 4th and 5th.
Due to some things at home, I'm think I'm only going to be able to make it to the MD faire once this season.

I’ll be there every Sunday this month. I still haven’t decided if I’ll make the first weekend in October as I’m contemplating on going to the Triangle European Martial Arts Conclave (TEMAC) which is organized and sponsored by the Knightly Order of the Fiat Lux. The second weekend I will be somewhere tropical (wherever and whenever my wife decides we are going to) to celebrate our 25th anniversary.

Here is some updated information in regards to carrying faux swords into MDRF:

As was discovered late last season by Stormdelver and confirmed to be carried over this year, they will allow our faux swords as long as you can pull it from the scabbard and show them it does not have a blade. Basically a three to four inch residual blade is acceptable, so it is essential it is able to be removed from the scabbard.

That said my old Maryland *special* scabbard is really cracked and coming apart at the edges so I will have to make another one. I’m thinking of making another scabbard core but making it solid except for the portion that the shortened blade needs to be inserted into.

Good and bad news!

That is good news because the solid core idea seems like it might help some with counter-balancing the top-heavy hilt if the belt suspension doesn't keep the sword hanging properly on it's own. Plus, we can look like we have a sword at least.

That is bad news because now I need to make a "maryland special" so I'm not swordless.

I have a 'faire sword' that is permanently affixed to the scabbard; I'm going to try and run w/that since its a whole pkg thing (sword, scabbard, baldric) - we'll see what we'll see.  If I need to, there's another wall hanger I could destroy for this purpose.

Yeah, that's the thing. We had ours glued together for a few years, and that was fine. Then last year they pulled us aside and said we couldn't bring those anymore. Now they're OK with a detachable hilt with no blade.

Going to be at NYRF (Tuxedo Park) for the weekend Sat 9/20 & Sun 9/21 if anyone wants to meet up. I'll be going solo & it is the last weekend. I'll be getting a hotel nearby for Sat night if anyone wants to crash. Another person would make armoring up easier by the way. :)

If interested, shoot me a message.

BTW I can make plans to come down for MDRF the following weekend if things are permissible. Wife will not be attending.

I go to the Arizona Ren fest every year, last two in full harness. It starts in February, which would probly be cold where most of you live but here it's usually close to 80 degrees by February. They allow real weapons as long as steel isn't visible (ie: peace tied swords in scabbards).

My hope is that I can arrange to go to some events further East some time to meet up with some of you guys, but to coordinate work time off and family stuff will take planning ahead. I think something like DOK would be awesome but traveling across the country to camp out for several days with total strangers in living history conditions is a bit intimidating. I've done WW2 living history before and it was great though.

Scott, there's always the MD Renn Fest or VA Renn Fest. Both are friendly to armor, and both have hotels nearby. VA is in late May / early June, and MD starts in August and goes to late October. VA will allow peace-tied weapons; MD won't. However, MD is much bigger and much more to see and do. The best day is closing day of MD Renn Fest, because everyone heads to the joust field at 2pm for a group picture of everyone in armor - whether part of the Order or not. This was last year:

Sir William was absent from this specific picture, but was there for a bit, I just don't have a photo of him with the group handy. Of the 11 people pictured, 5 of us are from the Order.

I'll be there both days this weekend. The sword policy this year is the same as last year in that you must be able to pull the hilt from the scabbard to show the blade has been cut off leaving only 3"~ 4" of blade. They will check you several times as well!

Central Europe? Sounds dodgy. Last time I was in central Europe I was detained at a train station by dudes with assault rifles. Luckily they gave my passport back when they let me go. I ended up spending the night at an apartment that the taxi driver claimed belonged to his sister, yet we had to climb the outer wall of the building up to the third floor and enter through the patio. Bathing was accomplished via a largish bucket with a sponge. Actually I think that's Eastern Europe I'm remembering. Those were... interesting... times.

Best watch yourself.

Sounds like quite an adventure you had there!  My only foreign interaction with uncooperative authorities that quickly give you that "We're not in Kansas anymore" feeling was in Central America.

Safe travels Martyn!  I have a feeling that you’re an experienced and “traveling smart”.

Similar to other stories above, I’ve stared down the wrong end of a rifle twice, once in a remote area of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico near Belize) and once in the Czech Republic (border crossing into Germany).  While these were real government soldiers and not some ruffians, it was still unnerving to say the least!

These days our travels are restricted to mainstream airlines and condos, not backpacks and a thumb.   ;)

Has anyone been down to the NC RenFaire? It was my first time making it out...went in 14th century soft kit and had a blast! We have a pretty awesome set up down here...Virginia Order members should come on down next year!

Speaking of which for LARP and daily use I was thinking of getting some Sodhopper Moccasins and was wondering if anyone in the order had ever bought Catskills or Sodhoppers before...they are basically from the same lineage of craftsmen and pattern. I was thinking of going with some basic muted colors like Brown and Black so I can pull it off at work as well as for LARP.

Are they worth the $350-$500? What really made it interesting was my wife uses orthodic inserts and they would custom build the moccasins to work with her insert so she can have a day to day shoes that is super comfortable and fits her insert and feet right! To me that is worth lots of money. But since I know a lot of the Order members have probably had more interaction with Catskills boots I thought it would be interesting to get some feedback on them.

Thanks!

Happy to share my experiences and contact with them (maybe under another topic?) if folks would find that useful.

Thanks for all the warm wishes.

Made it back safely and in fact had a great (if too short) visit in Prague, Bucharest and Sofia.

While I was in Prague also picked up a few more 14th century Bohemia replica items for our LH camp kit from Wulfund :)

Doh! Congrats; I wish I knew you had access to Wulflund stuff. I've been eyeballing their Cinquedea dagger for a while now. :)

I would :)

There used to be two faires in NC, but since one of them fell apart, I'm assuming you mean CRF, over by Charlotte? It's been several years since I've been down there, but I always liked that faire.

Catskills are definitely expensive. In fact, last I looked, they started in the $900 range and went up from there. Do they have some more affordable options now?

From what I understand, they're worth it if you have special needs with your feet. Otherwise, it's usually considered more cost effective to go with something like Son of Sandlar, which also is in the range of $350-$600, which is why I'm a little confused. :)

This is a favorite faire of my lady and I. We were there a couple of weekends ago on the 8th and 9th of November. We have been going at least one weekend a season for the past several years and have many friends that are regular patrons.

I would put them on par with the 'Son of Sandler' boots which I purchased mine several years ago and have loved them since I put them on the first time. They are extremely comfortable and durable. I've also had less expensive boots I used as frequently but they lasted two or three seasons before being replaced so the cost of the better quality balances out over time. ;)
