I vaguely remember a show from early-mid 2000s where the History/Military/Discovery/TLC channel selected 4 people from different backgrounds (military, fire, police, riding instructor?) and trained them in the arts of knightly combat. In the miniseries, they explain tactics, tournament fighting, armor, conditioning, and it went into some great detail. The "instructor" for most of it was Mike Loads, the guy who's on Weapon Masters now on the Military Channel. I've been trying to find clips, videos, or episodes of this show for years now, and I'm coming up short. Does anyone remember it?
-
I'm afraid I don't. I think that would have been interesting to see though. I'll have to keep my eyes open.
-
I DID in fact see pieces/parts of this program you're referring to Sir James.
Alas, as yourself, the name escapes me but it WAS very interesting....
-
Can probably do a lookup on THC's past episodes....? I just tried w/no success but my google skills are not supreme commander level yet.
-
Ah! I saw that too. The name escapes me though. :(
-
Well I couldn't find anything on TLC, THC or Discovery about a show in the 2000s about knights. Hope someone else can find/remember it!

I think this may be the article what you want guvnor.
Discovery Channel to Re-run "Making of a Knight"
Submitted by Milica on Mon, 2003-03-10 17:58
For those who missed its premiere, the Discovery Channel will re-run its two-hour documentary on medieval jousting, "Medieval Tournament: Making of a Knight." Discovery describes its documentary as follows:
"Witness the recreation of the Medieval tournament in its entire spectacle. The heart of Medieval culture, these glamorous occasions were well attended by the masses and contributed to national order and stability."
In truth, the program follows four young men and their mentor as they prepare and train for an authentic jousting tourney. The two-hour program will be repeated on March 23, 2003, at 5:00 pm US Eastern time (2200 GMT).

Problem is, the link is broken. Some further searching on amazon or deep discount DVD might turn it up.

Could it possibly be "The Making of a Knight's Tale"? This one Discovery Channel has, or at least acknowledges as once having had it. And, having seen this . . ahem . . movie I can attest that a lot of it revolves around the tournament.
-
Way to go, Sir Ancelyn! I couldn't find anything...that is, I found a myriad number of sites dealing with all things knightly, but nothing about an actual tv show. Search THC, TLC and TDC turned up a goose egg...for me anyways.
-
Ancelyn, that description sounds spot on. I can even remember the Family Guy episode about the renn fest where they have a bit of a spoof on it as Peter trains to joust, with special guest voice R Lee Ermy (the drill sergeant).
I WILL find this somehow. Hopefully it doesn't involve resorting to going through alllll my unlabeled VHS tapes to see if I still have it on one. :D
EDIT:
Bah! Such teasing! We know it exists! http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=16664

Family Guy rocks...that's one of my all-time favorite episodes.
-
I've often joked about quitting my job and becoming a Ren. jouster! :D
-
It's hard to find people who can go on the road with a jousting troupe. I heard that the Freelancers (the jousting troupe at MD faire) were desperate enough that they'd get you trained up right quick if you could travel on the road. :)
-
What sort of schedule do they keep? I recently found out my wife's been trolling the Medieval Times sites for openings- and she knows it requires some six weeks of training and whatnot. God, I love her- she knows what makes me tick! Anyways...I often wondered about those guys...an infusion of new blood couldn't hurt, provided I could be assured it wouldn't be spilled regularly to put on a show. ;)
-
I really don't know what the schedule is like. I know I can't take the time away that it would require, otherwise I'd probably have looked into it more deeply. It's a shame the faire season ended already, I'd just say to go ask Sir Barchan at the faire. He's on facebook, but that's the only way I know to reach him off-season.
-
No worries...in the meantime, think I'll start getting some riding in...I miss it. I figure, if I get in real good with the stablefolk, maybe they'll let me ride in full kit. A personal dream of mine, you could say.

Medieval Tournament: Making of a Knight
Featuring/Starring Mike Loades
A cowboy, a british army major, a mounted police officer, and a prize-winning horse rider/trainer
I just watched it again. :D

Wait, you saw it? When? Why didn't you tell us about it?!? lol

Yep, just saw it last night. I did just tell you about it in my previous post. :D
In a "whoa, yes!" moment of discovery, my dad found my original recording of it while converting VHS tapes to DVD and called to ask me if I wanted it converted to DVD. I thought the audio and video were out of sync at a few points, but Mike was talking at some points where it was showing clips of the others training, and it is 1 hr 57 min lon, so the length is right and nothing seemed blatantly missing. It still has commercials, but if I get a chance I will edit them out and make copies to bring to MDRF for those who want one.
-
Woo hoo! I never saw it so it'll be a treat for me.
-
If you make it to MDRF on the 23rd (closing sunday) I will bring you a copy. Anyone else who wants a copy, shoot me a PM so I know how many DVDs to make. It was a good watch.
-
I'll be there man...wait, I'll be there on the 22nd I think. Is everyone going for the DoW?
-
:(

I have commitments for Sat (22nd) so I can only due Sun (23rd). I will be going "DoW style", in armor, but not medieval.
-
I'm hoping I can do both days. Things at work have not been happy the last few Sundays.
-
Well, I'm pretty sure I won't make Sunday as I'll have visiting family who will be leaving on Sunday- since they're leaving early afternoon I wouldn't be able to make it in time.
Sir James, your knighting ceremony isn't scheduled for this weekend is it?
-
Heck I would like a DVD of that show please! I'll be there DoW as well in armor. :)
-
Sir Brian, would you mind terribly picking one up for me as well in the event I don't make the last day?
-
Certainly if James doesn't mind! :)
-
Sir William, my ceremony is tentatively scheduled the same day as Sir Nathan's. It was originally planned for last weekend, but despite best efforts my surcoat isn't done yet, I haven't received my spurs from RQP (which he said *should* be done, but didn't guarantee, so no worries), and I just, 15 minutes ago, got the dishing form and hammer I ordered to try to adjust my greaves to "finish" my knightly kit.
Sir Brian, I will bring a copy for you and Sir William, and one for Sir Edward as well - pending I get time to find some blank DVDs before departure (we are leaving fri morning and will not be home until after MDRF sunday).
-
Let me know if you still haven't gotten your spurs by then, you can borrow a pair of mine, I have a pair of prick spurs you could use for the ceremony if it comes to it.
No worries if you can't get the dvd done on time, we'll see eachother again. I'll be sure to bring that sugarloaf with me too.

LOL i forgot about that! Well if you can you should send a copy, this show seems very interesting
-
Sir James would be the one making the dvds but I'm sure he'd have no problem sending you a copy- you'll need to give him your mailing address.

alright ill ask him about it then
-
Sure, I don't mind mailing them. I'll have to get another stash of DVDs, I only had a few on hand. It may be a week or two since dad just had his knee replaced and their house flooded last weekend, I haven't heard back from RQP 6 weeks after ordering my spurs (despite email and phone call), and I need to either get my greaves to fit or tailor my mail and wear that harness, my wife's 30th birthday is in 2 weeks (shh, she's still 29 in her head ;)) ... so things are very hectic to say the last. I'll get caught up soon though.

Alright cool, send me a message when your ready to get my adress and etc :D thanks!!

I forgot all about these, meant to ask you about them after the ceremony, Sir James.

Gah! That was a perfect opportunity. I have the source image and just need to pop some blank discs in the burner to get them made. I'll see if I can do that this weekend while I work more on converting the Order website.
-
Awesome man, thanks!
-
Didn't think anything would ever come of this thread when I posted it! It's great to see the information on it - problem is, I can't find it anywhere! Any chance of the file being uploaded to Megaupload or some sharing site?

Never underestimate the power of somebody who keeps way more stuff for way longer than they should since it "might be used/watched later".
I still haven't picked up any blank DVDs, but I have the DVD image file ripped to my computer. PM me your address, and I'll send you one. I'm wary of the big "file sharing" sites, and my hosting provider has terms specifically against hosting it there and I don't want to risk having multiple sites of mine shut down. :)
-
After a short battle with Debian and convincing it that there's actually a blank DVD in the drive, I got these made and sent them out this morning. I went with the cheapest shipping option "First Class" (ironic), since "Priority Mail" shipping would have been $8 per DVD. Eek! Hopefully they'll arrive in a week or two. :)
Leganoth, if you don't see it in a couple weeks, let me know; you didn't have a zip code with your address and the post office looked it up but said they didn't have one for that particular unit, but had one a similar number with the same address. Hopefully it was right, if not, I'll send another one.
-
Oh awesome, can't wait man!
-
I got mine yesterday! Thank you very much Sir James for making the DVD copy for me! I owe you a brew or two next we meet! ;)

Excellent! No brews necessary, I still owe you my part for Sir Nathan's spurs so perhaps we can call it even. :)
-
Sure but I'll drink a beer with you anyways! ;)
-
Mine got here too. A drink on me as well. You're going to be plastered by the end of the next faire day. :)

Yep he sure will...oh and make sure to wear you new MT arms you've just acquired! ;)
-
Oh, let me know if the DVDs work for you or not. I copied them in linux, which shouldn't make any difference, but I didn't have any DVD players to check on here except on the PC and Xbox360. I'm crossing my fingers they work. :)
I will definitely be sporting some MT armor at faire this year!

Just got my copy in the mail, gonna watch it soon, thanks james!!!
-
Mine works great! I started watching it last night after WMA practice. Thanks again for coping it!
-
Got mine! Thank you Sir James...I'll stand you a round or two as well so...make sure you have somewhere to sit down at some point. LOL
I tested the dvd and it works, and I have one of those cheapy portable dvd players that are limited in what they do playback.
-
Awesome, glad the DVDs worked. Most of the credit should go to my dad; he found the original VHS tape and did the VHS to DVD transfer for me; if it weren't for that, I couldn't have done anything. It was my pleasure. :)
-
Awesome. I could tell it was a transfer from VHS, with low fidelity and mono-sound, etc, compared to an actual DVD. But the copy was burned perfectly, and ran fine.
I finished watching it last night. Not a bad show! So much better than Knights of Mayhem was. No time wasted on personalty conflicts, and much more detail on the history, training, and so on. And I love that they worked some of the courtly aspect into it as well.
-
Truly! I just finished it this morning! Really excellent show and very well done! I especially like that they selected the namesake of our order as one of the Knights personified! :)
-

This was one of my favorite things! It's not a "this is how we train people to kill people from horseback", it embodied the whole aspect of knighthood, and not just the martial one. :)

My Dad does that too...all of our old family videos have since made the transition. Glad he did it, I would've had a helluva way finding the time...and the old videos. lol
