Title: Hail, good knights
Post by: MacDimm on 2013-06-15, 03:23:00
My name is Nik, aka Fearghas MacDimm, Brother Sergeant of the Order of the Hospital of St. John. I've been involved in a historical/fantasy combat group called Dagorhir for about 7 years, and have decided in the last year that MacDimm should take up a holy crusade to repent for his former wickedness. I am currently a page of the Silver Order within Dagorhir, and am on my path toward knighthood. As I have researched arms, armour, and orders of the time, I have spent a lot of time returning to your forum with all of it's helpful members. It seems only right that I should join this forum to not only learn, but also to give back and share my knowledge. In addition to my involvement as a warrior, I also run a custom leather goods/armour shop called White Bear Armoury, and have a lot of experience as a leather worker that I would be happy to share. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Welcome! :)

Please remind an old weary stickjock who gets hit in the head too much what Dagorhir is again? IIRC we don't have a branch group in the Reno area.

Dagorhir is mainly an east coast/midwest thing, though there are a few groups out further west. A close equivalent would be Belegarth, do you guys have that? The RP aspect, which plays an extremely minor role, is in a LOTR/Medieval Europe setting. Basically it's full contact, full force fighting with weapons typically built of closed-cell foam on a fiberglass core. No headshots with handheld melee weapons (only rocks, arrows and javelins), no punches/kicks and no joint holds, pretty much everything else is legal. Armor is not required, but grants an extra point against one-handed weapons and complete protection against airborn weapons to the head. No magic.

I think all we have is Amtguard at the moment for boffer stuff, and the local crew is nice but isn't so skilled combat wise last time I fought them (20 wins, 0 losses and I'm a mid-level SCA West Kingdom fighter).

smells like you're bragging a bit there Thorsteinn.

Huzzah and well met MacDimm good brother!  It's nice to see another member here that follows the Holy Orders... even if you are the wrong one  ;) ;D

all kidding aside, if you need help with research and portraying a Hospitalier, let me know.  I know a bunch of guys that do it to the level of accuracy that astounds me.  Not to say you aren't on the proper path, your avatar looks great!

fair winds and following seas brother

Thorsteinn, we have Amtguard out here as well. We have a couple people that come and crossgame with us but most Amtguard people don't stick around long. Dag/Bel is a lot more physical game; weapons are heavier and sturdier by design, no magic, face shots are legal with airborne weapons, and people tend to hit a lot harder in general. Different strokes for different folks as they say.

Hail and welcome to the forum MacDimm. I have a good friend that was one of the original founders of Darkon and in recent years he started up a new group called Dragonsclaw which is pretty much like what Dagorhir seems to be about.  :)

IMO such clubs are just as valid as any other martial art club or group as all have three universal attributes that one must learn to be successful in any martial art which is Balance, Tempo and Measure.  ;)

Miyagi agrees with balance.
Most band leaders agree with tempo.
However, there seems to be some confusion about measure. After all ... with regard to measure ..."Some men are longer than others". :)

lmao  ;D that's awesome, I need to remember that next time I get into a techniques discussion with some of my ren buddies that can't seem to understand how I can skewer them "without lunging."  I keep telling them about the circle, it doesn't add up.  Maybe this will work!

And Sir Brian,

very well said good Sir.  I have friends that have taken lightsaber combat to an extreme level and argue it's the one place where a rapier can fight a katana all while trying to avoid a bo.

so where are you at again? i take it east coast. a lot of times the mid-eastern guys hang out at the Maryland renaissance festival.  i have always "been around" Dagorhir, but never gone to an event or meeting.  I used to frequent the old forums in college and started to again recently to help folks "better" their interpretations of armour and garb :)

Sir Wolf, I'm based out of Mittelmarch, which is the Indianapolis chapter. Before that I ran the Evansville chapter, Fangorn Forest, which I believe no longer exists.

Q: Know what you call a mid-level Western fighter in any other Kingdom?

A: Your Majesty.
;D

Fearghas have you ever been to, or are you going to, Pennsic War?

I have not attended Pennsic. I would like to at some point, but Ragnarok, which is the Dagorhir equivalent, is held at the same campground as Pennsic every year and lasts a week, is around the same time. It's a 9 hour drive for me and getting off work for either is pretty difficult. Convincing the wife and new baby to come along even more so :/ . Maybe one day....

Well met!  My grand Knight lives in Crawfordsville, and I know a lot of SCA people in the Indy area.  If you would like, I can pm your contact info to them.

Thank you Hrolfr. I actually know a few people that do SCA here in Indy as well. I actually used to date the daughter of the owner of Munitions Grade Arms. While I think SCA does a lot of cool things, it's just not for me.
