Title: Military Through the Ages 2014
Post by: Ian on 2014-03-15, 23:49:09
So today was the first day of MTA 2014 in Jamestown Settlement.  For those not familiar, MTA (Military Through the Ages) is a Living History Timeline Event in Jamestown, VA.  It spans a pretty large time.  I think the earliest group there this year are the Franks and Vikings.  For those that know John Kronberg, he's with the Franks this year.  I have the privilege of being with La Belle Compagnie this year for their encampment.  We're doing 1414, in preparation for next year being the 600th anniversary of Agincourt.

I had the honor of being Squire to Sir Geoffrey Peel today in the arming pavilion!  It was pretty surreal having the opportunity to squire for the group that really got me serious and inspired to do Living History in the first place!  La Belle's encampment is just stunning.  I've got over 200 photos just from today to go through, and we've still got tomorrow to go.  I will be sure to post some photos here and get a much larger flickr album set up when it's all said and done.

I wore my turnshoes from about 8:30 this morning to about 6:00 this evening, and they really performed great!  Everything held together well, and they were as comfortable as one can hope for.  I would definitely say it's very comparable to being barefoot in feel, but with the protection of a piece of 9 oz leather on your sole.  I'm happy to report that on straw, grass, wet grass, gravel etc... there was no slipperiness whatsoever with the shoes!

I'll get one or two photos up here in a minute, but I'm not going to process all 200 right now :)

i think the romans were supposed to go but something happened to all of them last minute. mta is a great event and i am surprised labelle let u dress for your first event and not be a stage hand. they used to do that for a few events till you got your kit and legs "wet" lol so big kodo's for them. how was big James? lol and Jeff Johnson? olddddddddddddd friends of mine from Lord Grey's retinue (who should have been camped next to you)

its a great event, for those that can, go tomorrow

My baron and baroness were up there and their pics make it seem like it was a lot of fun! Grats on being a squire!

My emotions are conflicted between extreme jealousy and great happiness for you!

1. Agin court feels like just yesterday that giant cavalry made the ground shake.

2. Great to hear they turned out well.

My apologies on the lack of photos.  Shortly after posting yesterday I promptly passed out from exhaustion!  Ha!

But fear not, we just returned from breaking down camp and I have more photos of today's events, and I think Helen got some shots of the award ceremony.  I literally sitting at my computer in a North Face jacket and hosen pointed to braes right now, so let me decompress for a moment!

Huzzah and congratulations Sir Ian for being included with such an august group! I’m both happy for you and a bit jealous of you but mostly happy!  I can’t wait to see all the great photos you took! :)

Those Are awesome Ian!
I bet those kid's are also having the time of their lives. What part of the country is this again? This seems like something I'd do for the future.

It's in Jamestown, a town which, sadly, was not named after me

Very nice photographs!  I really must improve my soft kit, right after the aventail, standard and gauntlet projects are done!

Awesome. Someday I will make it down to MTA. My company has talked about doing it, but it's such a long drive for us that we always decide against it. Too few of us get paid vacation and have jobs that allow us to take 4 days, especially over a weekend, in a row off. There is so much to see down there, that I wouldn't mind a bit coming as a spectator just to be able to try to catch it all.

Would be interesting if the order could set up there.
Just a thought.
