I took a pretty hard thrust to my throat last Sunday and the bib on my mask isn’t really padded enough for that. The guy apologized for not asking if I had a gorget or not but it did make it very obvious to me that I need to add a gorget to my equipment. :-\
I like this guy’s simple dog collar style gorget and think I’ll try making one nearly as nice as what he offers for a bit cheaper price. I made a temporary one out of some scrap tin and leather that should suffice although it won’t win any blue ribbons for looks! :D

Yeah, that does look like it has pretty good coverage. The one I have doesn't come up high enough, I think, but is a lot better than nothing. I have this one:

Man, sorry you took a hard hit. Ouch!

I've always liked the look of theirs but they would be too small for my bull neck...which is 19" with the collar of my gambeson. :-\

or see if allan can make you something more to your detailed neck size

You might want to consider something that protects up underneath the chin as well. It's pretty much a sure bet that shots have a way of deflecting up into the underside of your chin. Throat protection is something I don't mess around with.....
-
Was that during WMA or SCA practice? The one in your avatar looks like a good gorget, though I'm guessing there's a reason it isn't an option.

I guess I could but I hope to engage Allan with some custom reworking of my splinted cuisses. ;)

Good point (pardon the pun! :D). My fencing mask does cover the underside of my chin pretty well though.

I need it for WMA practice. My armor gorget is a fine gorget but is actually a little too big and bulky for that kind of usage. It does a great job of supporting part of the weight of my great helm though! ;)

The tricky issue here is that this can impede movement quite a bit. Most things that give that much coverage tend to also prevent standing in guards such as Ochs or high vom Tag.
David Teague made me an *awesome* mail standard that has a trauma plate underneath. I love it. Basically, he took a rivetted mail standard from IceFalcon, put it on thick padding, and sewed a hardened plate in between the mail and the padding where the throat is. The result is something that protects the throat incredibly well, fans out to protects the collar bones pretty well, and is flexible enough that I can lift my arms straight up without even really noticing that it is on. The downside is that he made this as a favor (though I paid for the mail), and he doesn't make this commercially. Still, if you ever want to consider a do-it-yourself project, this one would be a great one.

David illustrated this gorget very well here (http://www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=20262). Using Bill's gift gorget as a guide, I made a prototype (with butted / blackened mail) that stands up to SCA combat very well. Between this gorget and an aventail hanging off my bascinet I have no coverage issues, movement restriction or fear of my Adam’s apple being pushed back into my spine.

Wow! Those look great and seem very doable! Thanks for posting the links with all the great reference pictures! :)

Thanks Sir Wolf...but I've got a few pieces of various metals laying around! ;)

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten he'd posted pics of that!

Very cool! It's a really excellent design. I've never worn a gorget that I've been totally happy with, but this standard is fantastic, both for armoured and unarmoured bouting.

I use an old Regulus gorget in the SCA and with HEMA. Seems to do me well, though when I buy a aventail for my helm I will be going to a dog collar gorget.
If decide to no go with Torvaldr (who does very good work) then consider the ones that Windrose Armoury's (http://www.windrosearmoury.com/zc/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_7) uses.

I ordered mine in green of course so I can wear it with my ren-garb as well as practical use @ MASHS. Very reasonable @ $50.00 with shipping. :)
(now I can retire my homemade hybrid recycled dog collar gorget!) :D

Nice!
I use some of his Bazubands for my forearm's & elbows (though I will be going to hidden elbows next year).
It's good to see my friend get some business.

with or without the beard?
-
What is wrong with you! ??? With this warm weather starting...of course it's without the beard! :D
-
HAHA i wear a beard year round unless I'm doing a WW2 event ehhehe
-
I do not look right without my goatee.
-
I look like a beached seal if I shave off my facial hair...not a good look.
-
I keep my beard, I look 6 years younger without it.
-
It might seem like a curse now, Sir Ulrich but trust me when I tell you- as you get into your 30s you will value your youthful good looks!
-
Heh, I'd settle for just some decent looks of my youthful 30s! ;)
-
Well, some of us mature into our looks and actually look better now than we did as youngsters. That is sort of true for me (I was just a scrawny kid up until I hit 25). I'm in better shape now than I was then...but I could absorb a lot more abuse back then than I can now.
Weird, huh?

In 20 years, you may be doing quite the opposite and shaving all the time so you don't look as old as you are. That's what happened to me.

Ok I received my new gorget Wednesday after I had to send a few e-mail inquiries to when it would be done. I have to say that the hardened armor grade leather is excellent and it was well constructed just not correctly constructed for my neck. It was more oval shaped than circular which made the back portion stick up oddly. Instead of returning or re-engineering it I simply separated it and strapped each piece so now I have a pair of gorgets instead of just one. It will suffice for both WMA and fighting in garb – i.e. demonstration fighting in armor I eventually hope to do in the near future. I also said to hell with it and ordered an ice hockey type of gorget for WMA classes. :-\

Doesn't it get really hoy wearing all the armor...At the PA Rennassance Faire, I try to get away with the minimum.
-
Yes it certainly does Sir John! But I pace myself and stay hydrated as much as possible. It is only really bad when it gets into the high 80’s or more and high humidity. Then it becomes a mental battle of endurance because your body is working so hard to keep your brain and core cool. I try my best to remember that there was no real relief for knights back in the day and I also consider our service men and women having to endure such grueling heat in combat gear. :-\
-
I do all of that as well, but stop short of soiling myself (or my armor and smallclothes lol). It can get hot but I think of it similarly...the knights of old did not enjoy air conditioning or numerous hydration sources...tepid water or wine and lots of sweat, eh?
