Title: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Wolf on 2008-01-29, 01:29:07
what are the 2008 dates for the local faires?

PARF:
MDRF:
VARF:
PITT:
NCRF:
CRF:
OhioRF:

what weekends do we want to pencil in to goto together?

Good idea to start a list. :) Boy, we haven't been to NCRF in a loooong time. It would be nice to make it down there again. I'll have to check with my GF about her rehearsal schedule in the spring, and of course check with my pager rotation, and see what we can do.

For VARF, most weekends will work for me, though I'll have to see about pager-duty to decide on the specific weekends.

MDRF... well, I'm there about 50% of the season these days. :)

Let's see, here are the dates of several of the east-coast area 2008 faire seasons, roughly in order of opening date:

BARF (http://renaissancefest.com/BARF/index.html) (FL):   February 23 - April 6

NCRF (http://www.ncrenfaire.com/)*:   March 29 - April 13

GARF (http://www.garenfest.com/):   April 12 - June 1

TennRen (http://www.tnrenfest.com/):   May 3 - May 26

VARF (http://varf.org)*:   May 17 - June 15

KYRF (http://www.kyrenfaire.com/):   May 31 - July 20

NJRK (http://www.njkingdom.com/)**:   June ?

PARF Celtic Fling*:   June 27-29

GLMF (http://www.medievalfaire.com/):   July 5 - August 10

Bristol (http://www.renfair.com/bristol/) (IL/WI):   July 5 - September 1

Sterling NY (http://sterlingfestival.com/)*:   July 12 - August 17

Tux NY (http://www.renfair.com/NY/):   August 2 - September 21

PARF (http://www.parenfaire.com/)*:   August 9 - October 26

MDRF (http://rennfest.com/)*:   August 23 - October 19

Pitt (http://www.pgh-renfest.com/)*:   August 23 - September 28

Ohio (http://www.renfestival.com/):   August 30 - October 19

CTRF (http://www.ctfaire.com/connecticut_renaissance_festival/index.php):   September 27 - October 19

CRF (http://www.royalfaires.com/carolina/)*:   October 4 - November 16

* Asterisks mark the ones I've been to before. I've also been to TRF (TX) and Colorado, but I'm not listing them as "local". :)

** New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom was really tiny when I was last there, about 8 years ago.

No idea how accurate or up to date it is, but I found a list of faires by state (http://www.renfaire.com/Sites/state.html).

Do you have details and/or a website for the Virginia one?  The Muirs haven't been since it was just outside of Fredericksburg and I'd love to go again.

Yep, it's the "VARF" one above. I've made all the names clickable to go to their websites. The current VA faire is much smaller than the old one that used to be on Rt 3 in Fredericksburg, but it's growing and is a nice little faire.

I'm an idiot!  Thanks.  I should have realized the names were clickable.   :-[

You sure? It looks like the Gloucester faire is east of Richmond, about 3 hours south-east from me, out near the Chesapeake bay. It looks like an interesting little faire.

I've never heard of Medieval Fantasies Company... I guess they're a group that puts on small local faires around the state?

Hmm, Gloucester is on the Middle Peninsula.  Definitely something to think about.

Yeah, it might be interesting to see. I read a little more on the website and it looks like they're much smaller than VARF in terms of acts, cast, and number of vendors, but they also seem pretty well organized based on their rules and methods. However, nearly all of their events are at least 3 hours from me, and I'd have to decide how much it's worth driving large distances for a small event. It's probably better to try out these sorts of things as a group, when you can be sure to be able to make your own fun along the way. :)

Is it too early to start planning to go?  VAF is usually closed Memorial Day weekend (which means I won't have to work) so I'm considering the VARF that weekend.  The Gloucester one is reasonably close to our NNK cottage.   ;)
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-02-20, 04:05:51
It sounds like a good weekend to me! I never can be 100% sure a long way in advance due to my pager duty and who I can trade off with. But usually I can work things out. :)
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates
Post by: Sir Brian on 2008-02-25, 15:56:33
Well the missus and I are definately going to opening weekend of the GARF! Woohoo!

We went last year and had a great weekend! It's a bit of a drive but we manage to get
there in just under ten hours. Anyone else planning on going to opening weekend?
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-02-25, 16:16:11

I don't know if we'll make it to GARF, though it would be nice since I've never been to that one. How was it, compared to MD?

We're toying with the idea of going to NCRF since we haven't been in many years. It's much smaller, but it's also a lot closer. :) It's about 4.5 hours for us, I think.

We're also toying with the idea of maybe visiting Tux this year (we've never been), and perhaps Pittsburgh now that they've reopened under new ownership (the folks who own the Colorado faire, which was also pretty nice).

Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates
Post by: Sir Brian on 2008-02-25, 17:50:32
The GARF is on par with the CRF in size and I believe the same ownership since. They
definately had the same jousting troop as the CRF. The pirate auctions are fantastic, that's
were I got my really great rapier for $40.00!  ;D

Tux was a good size fair, just a little bit smaller I think than CRF and GARF...But there was
something a little "off" about the whole place. We never could pin it down precisely what it
was but the fair atmosphere wasn't quite as cordial as the GARF...Still a fun fair but not in our
top three. {Those being MDRF, CRF and GARF}. ;)

Yes NCRF is a bit on the small side, but a nice fair to start the season off after a long winter
of FWS {Fair Withdrawl Syndrome!}  ;)
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-02-26, 19:43:19
Yeah, it's probably still worth visiting any faire at least once. I like CRF as well.. Have you been to Pittsburgh? It's a small faire, but we thought it was decent, so I'm curious about how it might have changed under the new owners.

Added Bristol to the list:   July 5 - September 1,  http://www.renfair.com/bristol/ (http://www.renfair.com/bristol/)

I think A&A (http://www.armor.com/) has a booth at this one.

You know, that might be a good idea. Seeing as I obviously wouldn't be working that weekend, either. ;) Dana will be out of town in Chicago... I was originally thinking of going with her and possibly do some training with the Chicago Swordplay Guild, but I don't think I have the funds right now for the plane ticket. (Not after realizing how much its going to cost me to get my ISBN number for my book! Did you know you have to buy ten at a time?) So the Ren Faire would be much cheaper.

Out of curiosity, are swords allowed at VARF?
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-03-01, 04:02:12

10 ISBNs at a time? Yikes. I think typically it's publishers who are registering them, so it's not usually an issue. That stings if you're self-publishing... (though I don't know what they cost).

Anyway, yes, VARF does permit peace-tied weaponry. It's a very small faire, but it's growing, and has a strong cast.

This is getting a bit off-topic, but I just looked. It's a lot cheaper up-front to get the ISBN through lulu, since they have a $99 package that includes one ISBN, submitting it to google's book search, and putting it into database listings for libraries. I'm not sure what else the package does. Of course if you plan to use all 10 ISBNs eventually, it's more cost effective to get the batch.

Anyway, now returning to our regularly scheduled message thread..... :)

Wow, that's ridiculously cheaper if I go that route... thanks for the heads up!

And to bring this back on topic, the extra money I save can go into getting greaves and maybe sabatons for my harness... ;)

Would Sunday of Memorial Weekend work for y'all?  (Chris might have an Eagle Court of Honor that Saturday.  <fingers crossed>)

I may go several times this year. It'll probably work pretty well for me. This is contingent on my negotiation skills for the pager rotation of course, as always. :)

Is that May 25? I might be able to swing that. If Ed's coming, I suppose this means I'll have to armour up, huh?

Have to?   ???  Admit it, you are looking for an excuse to.  :)

Long story, short summary.  Sunday, 5/25 no longer works for us.  The Muirs will be going to the VARF on Saturday, May 24, carved in stone.  I'd love it if y'all could be there too.

OK, I'll try to keep the date in mind. Hopefully it won't be too hot for armor, though the new arming doublets should help with that.

Bill, if you want to armor up, and assuming I'm free that day, I'll certainly join in with the plate armor. :)

Darn tootin' I am. :) That stuff's too expensive to only take out occassionally for the rare times in class when we do harnessfechten and for demos.

I think I can make 5/24. I might be able to rope in Mason, though I don't think he'd want to dress up. I'm sure I could get him to wear my big feathered hat, though... he'd probably love that.

Personally, I love getting out to faire with armor. These days I'm really enjoying all the attention from kids and families that want pictures and have all sorts of questions about knights and armor.

If Mason comes, remind him to bring his mug!

Pamela, you are now required to start putting together that harness. :)

Let's see... the GDFB legs would work for that, and tons of armourers make those types of arms. The most expensive parts would be the mail and the velvet covered cuirass... We'll have to start searching for you. ;)

Ed and Bill,

You certainly know how to tempt a lady.   ;)

So I was thinking about it, and not that I'm trying to talk you in to anything *cough, cough*, but with a little bit of craftsmanship, you could totally pull off a transitional harness with cuirboulli leather parts.

Steel legs could come from here:
http://www.revival.us/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=293

Christian owns a pair of the above, and he's very impressed with them for the price.

Then you could get a set of steel elbows from here:
http://www.anshelmarms.com/elbows.html

After that, you'd can make the leather rerebrace and vambrace (the forearms and triceps). You could also probably do a globose styled breast plate without a back in leather. Stick those over your gambeson, and you're on your way to a complete late 14th century harness. You'd still need a helmet and spaulders, but those could come later. Gauntlets would be optional.

Just sayin'. :)

(Oh, and I have the perfect book that you might want to borrow... you know, just in case you think about doing this...)

Dang it, now those are tempting me. The legs aren't fantastic in my harness. With the new joined hosen, I'm wondering if they'll look way too big for my legs. :) And since these come with greaves, which I lack anyway... well... hmm... :)

Hmm, it says combatants of 135 - 160lbs.. they could well be too small for me... arg. :)

Getting the topic back on track, I do hope to see you gentlemen at at least one of the Ren Faires.  The Muirs will be at the VARF.  We are also thinking about the one in Gloucester since it's on the Middle Penninsula, i.e. not too far from our cottage on the Northern Neck.  Maybe, the Maryland Ren Faire Labor Day weekend.  (Of course, when I say "we", you know it's me trying to convince the family.)

Rosemary and I will be going to the opening of the Georgia fair next weekend.
We'll leave on Friday the 11th. This will be the debut of my completed kit!
The weather on Saturday down in the Atlanta area shouldn't be over 72 degrees
so I shouldn't roast to badly!  ;)

Have a safe trip Sir Ed and post pictures!

Well, we're back from NCRF! I added some pics on my site here: (http://ed.toton.org/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?year=2008&gallery=faire)

I also picked up a 13th C. antique iron key (assuming it's legit and accurate, of course), that originated in Germany (modern day Bavaria actually):

(clicky) (http://ed.toton.org/photos/2008/faire/a2149b.jpg)
(Sorry for the overexposed picture)

So it's not a sword, but I have a period antique! The guy gave me some advice for cleaning the rust up a bit. This hasn't had any restoration or cleaning.

Well last minute change of plans for Rosemary and I. Looks like we’ll be going to
the NCRF after all! The weather in Georgia is not going to be that great this weekend
and we are still not sure if it is a good idea for Rosemary to ride in a car that long with
her mystery illness. :-\
– Long periods of sitting, riding or driving use to cause her excruciating pain.
She has gradually been getting better over the past month but we decided
it would be best to try a shorter trip before doing that long trek to Georgia!  ;)

If Rosemary gets through this trip ok we’ll try for the GARF at the end of April.

Anyone else planning on going to the closing weekend of NCRF or the Georgia fair at
the end of April?
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008

Not us, I think VARF is next for us. Glad to hear Rosemary is improving! It's no fun to have a mystery illness. I just got off a round of triple antibiotics for mine. :-\

Oh, you'll probably see the antique dealer down at NCRF that I bought the key from. I didn't get his business card, and can't remember the website. I just know it had the word "relic" in it. Mind doing me a favor and checking on that while you're there? :)

I gave the Fiat Lux knights a business card, and emailed one of them (no reply yet), but I really only talked with one of them ("Sir Edward"), so feel free to hand out more cards or whatever. The more the merrier!

Sure!
Weather looks like it will be warmer with a greater chance of rain
on Saturday with less chance of rain but decidedly cooler on Sunday...
So I'll save my knight kit for Sunday and "Lord" it up on Saturday.  ;)

Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. Sometimes it's the other way around for me though-- I don't want to wear my nice leathers in the rain, but my aluminum is fine.

Have a great time! I hope it's not a total mud pit this time. The cast were referring to the "Royal Glade" as the "Royal Mud Pit" while we were there. :) Of course, it's not a problem all over the site, since some is indoors, some is paved, some is up on the hill, etc.

Yes! In fact: I was uploading them into my online photo album while you were posting!  :)

Here are some:
http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/NCRF/ (http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/NCRF/)
We met some new friends on the first day and some old friends from the CRF on
the second day! - Great surprise and we had a great time catching up. Our newest
forum member "Dragonlover" and his lady are our new friends. He has an excellent harness
and it looks like they will be going to the GARF at the end of the month as well so Rosemary
and I hope to meet up with them over that weekend! - Everyone else sure they can't make it?
- It would be quite epic to have us all invade the Georgia fair on the same weekend!

Well my harness was quite a success I think. Lots of photo ops and compliments, but the
one thing I was kind of expecting but was hoping wouldn’t happen did: I was a bit too scary
for the wee ones which was a little heart wrenching but understandable!  :-[
After all, I must seem ten feet tall to a four year old with my crested helm! :P

btw the e-mail addy of that antique dealer you wanted is:
sgminor@mindspring.com
He actually remembered you after I described your harness. ;)

I did get caught in a small shower in the afternoon so I’ll have a lot of rust removal to do
before the GARF. I’ll have to completely dismantle my crest from my helm, so just let me
know if you want me to post some pictures of my mounting scheme for my crest and I’ll
take some. – I probably will anyways just for posterity sake…save me the trouble later on!  ;)

I actually didn't get a large number of photo ops this time, but I got mistaken for being part of the Fiat Lux group, even though my colors were different. A cast member suggested I participate in the garb contest, but he must have lost track of the time because I'd have had to go back in time 15 minutes or so to make it. :)

I think we do need to have a mass invasion of one of the faires, certainly.

I've never made it to GARF, but I don't think the scheduling is working out this year for that one. :(

Well, there's me. Its been so long, I may not remember what a fair is like, though. :)

Should we pass the invitation along to the general VAF crowd? I'm sure at least a few people would like to meet up.

Yep, works for me. I'll just toss in the general disclaimer that it's still a small and growing faire, so it's not like MDRF, and it's a longer drive. I know some people might be less inclined to enjoy it. But going as a group, we'll all have a blast, I'm sure. :)

If it is should we all show up in our harnesses to be a menagerie of armor spanning three

Well, obviously we won't know the weather report until closer to the actual day, but my experience has been that it's been a little warm. I've worn the armor there, but it's important to drink enough fluids to compensate. It's similar to the MD faire in September in terms of the weather.

I'll just have to pick between plate and my 13th C stuff. :)

We all set for VARF this coming Saturday? The weather this week looks to be on the cool side. I hope that keeps up for the weekend. It would make for perfect armor conditions if it's cool and dry.

Looks like I'm most likely doing my 13th C stuff this weekend since the new sword should be here by then, and I managed to get some good time in this weekend on lengthening the hauberk. It's probably almost done now, after.. uhm... about 8 years. :) I may just call it done now. I'll see how long it hangs on Saturday.

Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008

Well, it opens at 10am. It's a good 90-120 minutes from my place (google estimates 1:49). It'll be a little shorter for most of you, I would think. So that might factor in... how early do you want to get there?

It'll take me a good 10-15 minutes to armor up in the parking lot. And the site isn't huge, so I can e-mail you my cell #, and we can probably meet near the gate no matter who arrives first. :)

Here's google's directions from the beltway:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=38.775499,-77.173462&daddr=5621+Courthouse+Rd,+Spotsylvania,+VA+22553&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=9&sll=38.57498,-77.473545&sspn=1.565333,2.845459&ie=UTF8&z=9 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=38.775499,-77.173462&daddr=5621+Courthouse+Rd,+Spotsylvania,+VA+22553&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=9&sll=38.57498,-77.473545&sspn=1.565333,2.845459&ie=UTF8&z=9)

And from the website: (http://varf.org/schedule.html (http://varf.org/schedule.html))

From Washington, DC

Take I-95 South to the Thornburg exit (Exit 118) West.
You will cross Route 1 and at Snell, 606 is joined by 208 (Courthouse Road).
Continue straight ( do not turn at Snell) to Post Oak Farm, where 208 (and you) take a hard left.
Follow 208 to the Lake Anna Winery on the left.

(I've found these directions to work well)

I'm not sure whether I'll wear the legs or not. Since I don't have greaves, I was thinking I'd only go for a half-harness, and wear the tall boots.

How are you dressing, Pamela?

I haven't decided yet, but I don't think it'll be the armour.  (This time.  ;) )  I have my usual Renn Faire dress, a new linen Revival Clothing gown, or my Eowyn costume.

Awesome, the weather report looks great so far. Hope it's accurate!

Yeah, I always armor up in the parking lot. I can drive in my 13th C stuff, but usually it's just easier to put on the boots and leggings ahead of time, and assemble the rest on-site. With the plate armor I don't have much choice... I wouldn't really fit in the seat with all of that on. :)

If you end up deciding to do armour, you're welcome to borrow my GDFB legs, since I'm probably not going to wear them.

What I think I'll do: Cuirass, arms, mail fauld, and a hat. I probably will get annoyed at a helmet all day, and likely won't want to carry it around with me, but we'll see. I'll probably wear my hosen, and I'll wear the long boots rather than the ankle ones.

And I'll probably wear this:

Probably a good idea on the hat. That's what I've always done with my plate harness (as my avatar shows). I use a sort of muffin-cap sort of thing.

Well, like I said, if you'd like, you can borrow the GDFB legs. That, your gambeson, your cuirass and the jack chains will make for a formidable looking Sword Chick.

On the other hand, it would also require that you have something to point the legs to, which I'm not sure if you have yet.

You may want to talk to a doctor about having him removed. It will be easier to find a helmet to fit. :)

It doesn't matter how shiny the rest of us are, you should dress up the way you want! :) Do any of your swords have scabbards? A nice blade makes for a great accessory in any case. I can always bring an extra.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my new Albion will make it here without issue. It's scheduled for delivery on Friday. Cutting it close!

Ooooo, nice! Though I do wish Christian Fletcher used better buckles. With all the cast pewter ones available these days, I don't see why he has to use the nickle plated, uber-modern ones.

Still, I can't wait to see your new toy in person! FYI, in a few weeks I was planning on breaking out the cutting stand in class, after we finish the ringen and dagger section.

Oh, I am perfectly content to let you gentlemen out shine me.  I get to look after all.  :)

Warning:  Girlie talk ahead...
I think I'm going to play dress up and wear my Eowyn costume.  If only because I'm assuming I'll have more opportunities to wear armour in class, and I think it will be a nice change for you gentlemen to see me in something other than my workout clothes.  :)

It's based on the image below.  Though in the movie she wears a brown overskirt in the camp scene.  I'll probably do the same.  And though I do have a couple of swords with scabbards, since Tommy is bringing a friend, I think I'll leave my swords at home.

Now I'm off to do my hair... :)

End of girlie talk.

The day worked out very well, excluding the huge traffic delay in the morning (an 18-wheeler burnt to the ground). It was great to get a chance to take the new sword out for a spin, not to mention the new crest + torse + mantle, that I managed to finish up to the point of being functional in a fit of creativity last night.

I hope everyone had a great time!

Yeah, it was fun. Its been a while since I've been to a faire, so it was nice to go to a small one, and on such a nice day.

Sir Brian, it was a pleasure to finally meet you and your lady.

Today was the first time I'd worn my harness for an extended period of time... I have to say, the Revival Clothing arming cotte and hosen breathed far better than I'd realized. Despite being in the sun all day, I didn't so much as sweat underneath it all. (except underneath the wool hat... but better sweat than sunburnt!) It just goes to show you how important it is to wear the appropriate clothing underneath. I was very impressed with how comfortable I remained all day. Well, until it was time to use the porta-john, that is! At that point it was near the end of the day, so I just went back to the car and took the armour off, threw on my regular silk cotte (also Revival Clothing), and wore that for the last part of the day. Strangley, the armour didn't feel significantly warmer than the cotte did.

I'm a dummy, and didn't bring my camera, so I'll rely on Ed and Pamela to post pictures.

I too was a dummy with regards to the camera. I kept forgetting to pull it out and take pictures, so most of the shots I have are from handing it off to someone else. So I'm sorry to say I really only had shots of myself and my lovely Lady Katherine.

Great pictures, Sir Brian! Mind if I steal one or two to add to my kit-photo page?

I love this profile shot: http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/VARF/?action=view&current=08VARF_032.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/VARF/?action=view&current=08VARF_032.jpg)

And this is a good photo of Bill, I think: http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/VARF/?action=view&current=08VARF_029.jpg (http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/VARF/?action=view&current=08VARF_029.jpg)

I think part of why we didn't feel we were sweating very much was that the air was dry and it evaporated quickly. I should have drank more water. I'm only now getting over the headache I started getting on the drive home from the faire. Still, I've done worse. :)

Definitely looking forward to MDRF this year, as always! :)

Sadly, there are little to no Renaissance Faires in my country, and no Western Martial Arts whatsoever. There is some Olympic sport fencing going on but I'm not interested in that since it's not what swordsmanship is really about. Besides, I find those obscenely thin and flimsy blades to be unmanly.

Between a bastard-sword and a rapier, I'd choose the bastard any day.
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008

Hello, welcome to the forum! What country are you in? You might be surprised. Sometimes there are swordsmanship groups to be found, or you can always try to start one. Here in the US the renfaires are all over the place. They've sprouted up all over the place over the last 30 years.

I would hardly think so, but for what it's worth, I live in Romania. I suppose you know where it is since the NATO summit was recently there, and you Americans can't really be defined by videos where they ask people on the street about random stuff (despite the fact that it makes you all look extremely bad as a whole).

Videos like that can be made to cater to every nation, and the guys making the video always leave out smart answers and only include the really, really, really stupid ones.
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-05-28, 20:07:53

Well, that's true.. shows like that are always edited to provide the intended effect.

However, it's also fair to say that most Americans aren't as well traveled, in terms of Europe and the Middle East, as Europeans are. As a friend of ours pointed out, it's easy for Europeans to forget that for most Americans, it's possible to drive for over 10 hours in any direction and still be surrounded by people who speak the same language. I think its fair to assume that most people will have the greatest familiarity with their own continent.

And I don't think I could try to start a swordsmanship group since I'm only 15 years old and don't really know where to learn about WMA in the first place. I'm guessing that I could try teaching myself, but that would be pretty precarious. In the future, though, who knows? I might just try doing something like this in my spare time, since I know of some people that could be interested.

But for what it's worth, I am going to Switzerland for the UEFA 2008 European tournament, and I'm staying in a German town called Freiburg. Would there be any WMA action to be found there?

Oh, I remember we talked about the TX Renaissance Festival (TRF) while we were at VARF. I just realized I never posted the photos from our trip to TRF in 2006, so I've dumped them here:

http://ed.toton.org/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?gallery=2006.trf (http://ed.toton.org/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?gallery=2006.trf)

You can see how wide the lanes are, the style of the architecture, etc. I got a few shots of the numerous fairies too. :)

The girl with the mail halter/bikini-top that was pulled from the audience during the "Ded Bob" show in those photos ended up having a "wardrobe malfunction" during the show. :)

Anyone making plans to attend opening weekend @ the Great Lakes Medieval Fair
in Geneva, OH?
i.e. July 4th weekend.

This is a decent sized fair and was fun. The food and beer is good and the music is great.
Also the same jousting troop that performs at MDRF work this one!  ;D

It's about a 6 1/2 hour drive from Baltimore.

Checking the weather history on the Accuweather page the climate there is actually not
to bad for armor. Low humidity and all that.  ;)

The Muirs will be attending the MD Renn Faire Labor Day Monday, barring unforeseen complications.  Anyone care to join us/ meet us there?

Cool. I'll have to wait and see how my pager rotation works out after Pennsic. I often skip the monday on that weekend, if I manage to go. I usually make it to MDRF for about 8 to 11 of the 19 days.

That's the date we usually go, because it helps all of us get through the day-before-school-starts-again fidgets.  We missed it last year because we were doing the College-palooza tour.  (Oh, yeah, only 3 Muirs will be going this year.  wow.)

a chailín mo chroí and I will be there. We get season passes and go at least one
day each weekend. Labor day weekend they usually have free admittance for senior citizens
and we'll most likely bring Rosemary's parents like last year!

Where and when are we all going to rendezvous?

As a general rule, people in our circle can usually be found in the open space next to the White Hart Tavern, on the side that faces the food court. We don't stay there all day, obviously, but it's sort of our de-facto meeting place, so we pass through there a lot. It works well since it's relatively centrally located and fairly open, and it's not out on the Serengeti part of the faire site.

We plan to get there around opening time. We'll be on the fringes of the crowd waiting to get in.  You can also find us in the audience at one of the Rogues' performances (Mark really needs a kilt! ;) ) or one of Shakespeare's Skum's shows.

i just noticed this on the first page, hehehe it was about 8+ years ago Sir Edward, I've been married for 7+ and we went to it a year and some months before that. hehehe I think I should remember that evening AFTER we got home.

Yeah, we're going opening day to MDRF. As for garb vs armor, I'll let the weather decide what I'll be wearing. :)

Yep, I know when our trip was to NJRK, cuz I remember us also hitting PCF the following day and talking about the night you had. :)

I'm going to work on my chausses these next two nights in any case. I don't know if they'll be ready in time, but who knows, the weather might cooperate on opening weekend for once. We'll see. :)

Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-08-18, 17:35:56

I'm not sure yet. Usually (if I can go on that weekend) we'll be there Saturday and Sunday, and use Monday as a day off, which Kat needs since school starts the following day. Since I was just on-call this past weekend, I'm probably good to go that weekend, but we'll need to discuss our schedule. :)

Weather looks like it will be cool enough for armor. Mid 80's with low humidity is good enough for me.
So opening day I will be in armor. What say you Sir Ed and Sir Wolf?  :)

Well, we're still discussing that Monday's plans, but so far it's looking pretty good, since we may be doing Kat's birthday cake thing that day.

As for opening weekend (only a few days away now!), the weather report is looking good, though it keeps changing. So far they're calling for 84 on Saturday, which would work for armor:  http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USMD0113.html (http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USMD0113.html).

I'll probably only wear the crest if Brian brings his too. :)  (speak of the devil, he wrote in while I was writing this!) :)
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-08-22, 15:58:55

Weather report still says 84 and sunny for tomorrow. Looking good. I managed to spend some more time on the chausses this week and get some gussets installed too.. I think they'll be ready to go for tomorrow!

Something I always think about at the beginning of the season is what I want to shop for, or at least keep my eyes open for, and what shows I'd like to catch, etc, over the course of the season. Do you guys have anything special you want to look out for? Anything on the shopping list? Acts and shows you really want to see?

Some changes this year--

This is the last season for Hack-and-Slash, so it's a good time to catch them before they move on.

Also, one of the actors in the Puke and Snot show died at the beginning of the week from a heart attack. It's really a shame... they've been a staple of the renfaire scene for over 30 years (probably more like 35).  I don't know if the show is supposed to be at MDRF this season or not, but they're definitely not finished, as they're re-casting the role.

Several infrequent acts are returning. Owain Phyfe will be here the last two weekends (amazing voice he has, and he sings in something like a dozen languages). The Medieval Baebes are returning too, but I don't know which weekends. Hey Nunnie Nunnie is returning, but I also don't know which weekends. Their show is hilarious, especially if you're Catholic.

The Rogues!!!  <swoon>

Shakespeare's Skum, especially Macbeth in 20 Minutes or Less

Hillby the Skinny German Juggler.  He's later in the season, so I've only caught his show once.  The one time I did, I was laughing so hard tears were running down my face.  (Though that could be caused by the amount of meade that I had had by then.)   ::)

But here's what the Medieval Baebes' site says:

October 18th & 19th
Maryland Renaissance Festival
Saturday & Sunday
Performance times at
1pm, 3pm & 5pm each day

BTW, this could be just a rumor. I heard through the grapevine that they were leaving, but I didn't know if they were leaving MDRF or quitting their act. But at their stage at the faire, they still have signups for their mailing list and so on. I suspect we've been misinformed.

Anyway, we had a great weekend! It was nice to see some of you guys again. And to have several of us armored up is always wonderful. I posted links to some of my pics in the other thread.

So, anyone considering armor for this weekend? It looks like there may be some scattered storms on saturday, but it's supposed to be much more clear on sunday and monday. We haven't 100% decided our schedule, but we may be there through the weekend and put in a half day on monday. Just not sure yet.

I'm tempted to aim for sunday for armor.

Well Dragonlover will be in town Friday night. He said he is packing both his
steel and samuari armor. Not sure which day he's wearing what.  :-\

I think I am going to wait until Monday to wear my armor again because it
looks to be the coolest and less humid day of the whole long weekend.

But we'll be there all three days that is a definate!  ;D
Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-08-31, 01:56:30

Sorry we seemed to have missed you guys today. We were all over the place, and I was showing my mom the sights. :)

I'm thinking I'll do armor tomorrow (sunday), and possibly again on monday depending on how I feel, etc. The weather report changed a bit, and now it looks like tomorrow will be the cooler of the two (only by a degree though), and the humidity will be about the same for both days (only 50%, unlike today's 85-90%).

I want to get my shield out there and show it off a bit, and do the photo-ops thing...

And even though I didn't wear armor today, I'm exhausted as though I had, just due to the heat+humidity.

BTW, as an aside, we nearly always meet up at the White Hart at 6pm for the pub sing at the end of the day, and stay there til close. So if we haven't met up before then, we can usually be found that way at the end of the day :)

Unfortunately I was on-call. Arg! I wish we had that weather the week before!

I won't be back at MDRF this coming weekend either since we'll be up at PARF on Saturday.

Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Edward on 2008-10-02, 20:43:58
Well, due to various circumstances, I've had to adjust my pager schedule again, so I won't be back at faire this weekend. That leaves only two more weekends of MDRF, and next saturday I'll be at a memorial service. I plan to make the most of the remaining 3 days of faire. So I plan to not miss any of them!

I hope the weather stays cool. I could armor it up all the way. And maybe actually get my plate armor out before the season is over!

You will be missed.  :(

I will be there Saturday in armor but not Sunday as it will call for some chance of rain.

Well, this coming weekend's weather looks good, so far:

http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USMD0113.html (http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USMD0113.html)

I can handle 72 and sunny on Sunday (can't go Saturday). Methinks the armor needs to make an appearance.

Title: Re: Ren Faire Dates - 2008
Post by: Sir Brian on 2008-10-08, 14:43:15
So you will definitely be there Sunday in armor?

I'll wear mine then as well. I'll probably go without armor on Saturday since there is a chance
of rain...(and wearing the gambeson two days in a row still gets a bit ripe!)
  :P

That's my plan! Sunday, MDRF, Armor. Unless something goes horribly wrong, I should be back from my trip Saturday evening, and hit the faire on Sunday.

It was our original plan to be at the PARF this weekend for our 19th Anniversary...but my boss
made plans to be away requiring me to work this weekend only for him to change his plans at the
last minute and not need me to work! So looks like we won't be able to make it to PARF this year...
although we MIGHT try and make the last day before heading down to CRF.  :-\
