Title: A new lord at Caerphilly castle !!
Post by: Sir Gerard de Rodes on 2011-11-15, 19:13:31
I am absolutely extatic...... ;D ;D
Lady Joanne and myself have been asked to occupy the Lords chambers in the great eastern gatehouse at Caerphilly castle, during the weekend of their Christmas festival.
We will be able to live in and dress the room with all our medieval furniture and trappings that we usually try to cram into our tent, and help bring the place to life.
The rest of our group are setting up an encampment, along with a few more specially selected groups, in the inner and outer baileys, to provide realism and entertainment for the guests over the weekend of the towns medieval christmas festival and market.

I`m so excited, I think i need the garderobe.... :o

I understand. But of course, they LOVE it when you bring out a phone or something. Every time I'm in armor and I need to use my phone, people start taking my picture like crazy....

"OMG there's a knight using a phone!"

Lady Joanne and I had a fantastic weekend as the lord and Lady of the castle. We were even asked to portray the Lord and lady Gilbert De Clare to welcome the guests for the Illuminata shows and medieval banquets in the great hall.
Once the room was dressed it looked fantastic ( even though I say so myself) and was surprisingly warm, once all the external doors were closed lol.
The fayre was a great success and we had a great time with friends old and new.
There are a few poor quality photo`s, that I tried to take of the room here; http://s230.photobucket.com/upload/albums/JOBO_028/?location=Caerphilly+Christmas+2011 (http://s230.photobucket.com/upload/albums/JOBO_028/?location=Caerphilly+Christmas+2011)

The lighting was so hard to capture.

We had a friend take some better quality photo`s that I will place in photobucket as soon as he has processed them all. Some are on Facebook already.

My Lords, Ladies, honored knights and brethren of the order, It is that time of year again.

Your most humble servant, Lord Gerard De Rodes, and his most gracious family, have been summoned by the young king, Richard II, to be the custodians of the castle at Caerphilly near the boarders of England and Wales, In sole duty to keep the peace during the yuletide festivities and market granted to this town by the crown.

There will be many lords, ladies and knights in attendance during this time, many of those being from the Freemen of Gwent ( a troublesome lot if ever there was ).

The rooms of this great fortress are to be brought to life again with the warmth of friendship and good tidings, the light of candle and fire, the sound of merriment, fun and youth, and the clash of sword upon armour and weapon upon flesh !!.

The Caerphilly Christmas market will be a wash with local produce and historical items.. Enough to keep the population of the town amused and teased of their hard earned pennies.

Wish us well dear brethren, as I have the kings will and pleasure to uphold ( you all know how hard that is ).
Your ever faithful servant, With the highest regards,

Lord Gerard de Rodes.

The attending lords ladies, and good people of the Freemen of Gwent and the fearsome  archers of Meibion y Ddraig, managed to bring life to these old grey walls.

Everyone pulled out all the stops to make the weekend a great success.
The rooms of the Great East gatehouse looked amazing, populated with all the furniture and every day items from 4 great families.

The archers took place in one of the lower garrison rooms and we had an armory set up in the other.

The Freemen`s tourney display was a popular attraction on both days, ending ,as usual, with myself as the English Lord and the Welsh commander, Cpt Nicholas Horton being shot at point blank range by the Welsh garrison archers.

My Daughter, the young Lady Caralee, was privilaged to be asked to be the attending dignitary for the weekend. This was in order to give our young lady visitors an interest in the events of the day. After all there is always plenty for young boys to get excited about what with all that armor, weapons and combat going on. I`ll never forget a little girls desperation to meet the princess, then the sheer expression of joy in her voice when she proudly announced that she had found her and met her and was suggesting that she should return to the king for Xmas .... lol

As requested, gentlemen, our good sheriff managed to find some time between visits from the MOPs to deploy his magic painting box to capture some images for everyone's delight.

Yes Sir James they are "shooting" at us.
In European re-enactment it has been decided that as long as the archers use a bow of less than 40lb draw weight that they can shoot at live targets using re-enactment blunt arrows, or as they are commonly known, "red heads".
Lob or drop shots across a battle field are acceptable as long as every participant is wearing a helm.
Flat or point blank shooting is acceptable when the target is fully armored and wearing a fully visored helm.
When they hit a fleshy bit it still hurts  :o

Once, a rubber tip/red head broke off as it hit the conical snout of my houndskull and the rest of the arrow got wedged into the ocular of the visor. Because I scrunch myself up in my helm and armor against the onslaught of arrows,I hadn`t realized what had happened. The Archers stopped shooting and the audience laughed at the arrow protruding from my face, I tilted my visor to see what they were laughing at and they laughed even more because now the arrow was sticking out of the top of my head. When I eventually realized what had happened, I blessed the day I had bought a helm with very narrow eye slits  ;)

It's actually, in a way, more polite than our local term. "Dane" is short for "mundane", abbreviated in a way to intentionally make it sound like we're just calling them foreigners. ;)  The term predates my getting to know lots of other rennies, so I don't know who coined it.
