Title: 'Battle Of The Nations- Team USA' has a website.
Post by: Thorsteinn on 2012-03-20, 05:42:18
To help support these guys (some of my friends are on the team including the current SCA King of the West) I figured I'd share their website.

I'm starting to feel like this forum needs a "like" button. :)

Oh wow! I *LOVE* that mask effect at the end. Very cool. I saw the website a while back, but never saw this video. Very cool.

Ivan, do you know if there's any movement within the SCA to bring this kind of combat to the SCA itself?  I would get involved in a heartbeat if this was available in the SCA.  The combat itself and the kits are great.

Ian, you and I are of a mind.  Would definitely join, just maybe not with Storvik.  Had a bad experience with a couple of their more hardcore 'players'.

And I find it somewhat funny that they argue about kit authenticity all the while fighting with rattan staves made to look like swords.

As for BotN - I already got my t-shirt and wore it proudly today in the gym.  Thinking I might have to wear it more out in public as no one asked me a thing about it yet.

As far as I know the answer is 'No' in an official capacity even though most of Team USA is made of current SCA members (at least 3 Dukes that I know of).

There's not even been talk of it yet, and I say yet, in that the event is not till the end of next month. In that at least 3 of the members live in Northern Nevada and Northern California (Baron Wolt lives in Reno). I suspect that I shall be hearing more about this soon.

Please keep us posted if that does start to catch on.  I noticed Icefalcon (Andre Sinou) is their field commander, so it's my hope that guys like him start to introduce this to the SCA.  Although, the reality I think for a group as large as the SCA, is that the liability of so dangerous a sport could be prohibitive for them.

I think SCA would have the liability issue, as Ian mentioned. However, I can easily see some "cross faction" things where SCA, WMA, etc, has some members who also start their own group to do this kind of combat.

SCA rattan combat is for the safety aspect, rather than authenticity, so it is what it is. At least they are starting to use more regular looking sword hilts and pommels with duct taped "blades", instead of everyone running around with basket hilts and bare rattan.

Personally, I'd rather see the BOTN style combat become available in a separate organization. I don't care for personas, so I don't want to have to make up and "portray" some fictional historical character just for the sake of combat. An "offshoot" of WMA, or "Extreme WMA", or whatever they want to call it. It's far enough separated from SCA style combat it shouldn't be considered the same.

Hehe, I'm game for this if anyone wants to armor up and bash at each other!
In all honesty I’ve envisioned this as a hopeful progression of our Order doing demonstrations and whatnot. VARF longsword demonstrations this year and a full blown armored grand melee next year!  ;D

A grand melee...a man can dream, can he not?  :)

BTW there is a One-On-One portion of BotN. The rules are  Here (http://www.battleofthenations.com.ua/info_participants.php?lang=ru&mainMenu=22&nMenuItemID=1394).

Personally I would love to see a Laurin Tournament style event held here in the states. :D

The Laurin Tournament gallery was my inspiration to do my kit right.  When I saw what they were doing I was totally blown away.  They look like they literally leapt off the pages of some 14th century manuscript.  I keep their website bookmarked just to ogle at the pictures every now and then.  If anyone hasn't seen what we're talking about, please check them out:

Oh yes...caught up on that site last year when they were looking for combatants.  I aspire to that level one day...their kits, their weapons, their abilities.
