Thought the best thing to do as a new member of this forum would be to tell a little about myself.
As you might have guessed my name is Kenneth, I'm currently 28 and from Vanløse, Copenhagen, Denmark and work as a smith's apprentice, with 3 years to go till my education is done.
Although I'm a great big history nerd I'm fairly new to the medieval period, my main interest having been the second world war and Japanese warfare, warrior culture and arms and armour during the sengoku jidai.
Other than history I also spend quite a bit of time on airsoft, roleplaying (both PnP and LARP), tabletop wargames and PC gaming.
I'm greatly interested in armour, always had a great love and admiration for it which originally was the main thing drawing me to studying Japanese arms and armour.
For many years I've wanted to craft armour myself, have spent alot of time on the armour archive and thinking to myself "one day"...and now, this coming weekend, if all goes well, I'll be signing a contract to rent a hobby workshop that will be all mine to start making that dream come true.
The world of chivalry and knights are fairly new to me, having focused heavily on the other two historical periods.
Recently though I felt like I needed a bit of a change, I needed something new and fresh for me to study and seeing as I'm a bit of an anglophile I thought England in the 14th century would be a good place to start.
I have a dream of one day having at least one English warrior "outfit" on display from the 11th century till the 21st, and currently have an almost complete 2005-2010 SAS Task Force Black loadout (for airsoft) which is 95% original, reelsteel parts and also about 70% completed on a WW2 D-day British para kit.
I'll mainly be using my future kit for LARP'ing, there are sadly no living history groups around here doing the periods I'm interested in (alot of it is focused on the viking age, for obvious reasons) and no SCA groups whatsoever.
Luckily, the LARP community and standard around here is very good, so it's not much of a loss, even though you do get some weird "looks" when you mention LARP on armouring forums etc.
Although the chivalric code have never been something I've looked closely at before, I've recently found it compelling...mainly because I recognize some parts of myself in it and the idea of bringing that back to life is a thrilling thought and to try and live by it seems to me a goal worth aiming for.
I know it's quite a longer introduction but thought I would try and get as much info about myself on there for a proper presentation.
I may for a time sit fairly silently on the sidelines, reading up and expanding my knowledge and hopefully I'll have something worth sharing in the near future.
I'm looking forward to participating and being a part of this forum.

Welcome to the forums. Are you the gentleman who stumbled upon my YouTube channel? If so, you'll know that from my heavily biased perspective, 14th Century England is of course the best place to start your interest in medieval arms and armor! :)

That would be me yes, found the video very informative.
I am mainly interested in the mid 14th century as of right now, found a few effigies from 1340-60 that I find very interesting.
It is quite a new world and it's been a long time since I've known so little about a period and learned new things so fast, it's a good feeling ^^
My first kit will be a mix of stuff though, things that's to start with in regards to armouring.

I pretty much have it sorted, good thing about that sort of kit is that there's a lot of documentation to help you sort it out.
Also got a bit demotivated after I received a long awaited custom made airsoft lee enfield, which turned out to not be what I expected.

I know, and I am for most parts, but I must admit sometimes the amount of negative comments does start getting to me.
But perhaps I've just been looking on the wrong forums ^^

Some HEMA folks think wearing period clothing to fight in is LARP. ::)
Good LARP can be very good. There is a German guy who does Warhammer(?) LARP as a Battle Cleric. If my hisorical kit was as good as his fantasy kit, it would be a very good kit indeed.

Ah yes, we have something here called Krigslive (Warlive) based in the warhammer world where people sign up and must play as units.
Personally, something like a historical LARP would make me a very happy man, but in LARP'ing "historical" is as much frowned upon as elves and trolls in reenactment, so I seem to be stuck between "two worlds" as it were.

I used to be interested in LARP. Im not against it now but Its not in my cup of tea.
14th century is good, But what is 14th century without the 13th Century!!!

I must admit that my interest in the 14th century has a lot to do with the armour worn.
When I think of knights the image that pops into my head is always that of a mid-late 14th cent knight.

Well met Kenneth. You can hardly go wrong with late 14th century as your ultimate goal for an impression, but it's going to take a while to get there. Always remember when assembling a new harness - be patient! You'll probably find that your impression will evolve over time as your tastes become more refined and you more fully realize what you like and don't like. The quality of your gear will also probably improve as your knowledge of both history and modern reproductions gets better. The more patient and careful you are about acquiring your harness the better it will be and the less it will cost. Of course it also depends on what you want to own armor for. For living history events, renfaire, combat societies, etc all have different requirements. You can get some great advice from folks here on all those subjects.

The folks on this forum are from all walks of medieval life: HEMA, other WMA, SCA, LARP, Living History, Renaissance Festival goers, etc. As stated earlier, if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong. ;)
I understand the “between two worlds” thing and I believe it’s natural and good. I started out doing nothing but beating my friends over the head with rattan for over 10 years, and I was happy. Then I saw some awesome kits on this and other forums and decided to move in a more historically accurate direction. I have a LONG way to go. Then I was fascinated by German longsword techniques and took a few classes. I have a VERY long way to go. :o
That being said, it’s more about the journey than the destination. Have fun!

I'll be heading more in a mid 14th cent direction though, found a few effigies I really like from that period.

I'll be starting with the soft kit and move from the inside out, the plate armour I'll be making myself as my main interest is still armour construction, so at least some money to save there.
I'll proberbly be making stuff from several different periods though at some point.
And I know full well what it takes to put together a kit, spent 3-4 years on my 21st century SAS kit...it's alot of work but very satisfying when you get it done.
I must admit though that at times I envy you from the US...the problem with living in a very small country is that alot of things isn't available.
I wanted to get into the SCA but the closest group is in Stockholm which is still to far from me sadly, and as mentioned, most living history here is viking age.
I did find a HEMA group here in Copenhagen who even train at the Copenhagen National Museeum...but I have to be honest and say that unarmoured swordfighting dosn't really interest me that much.
But who knows, maybe I can convert some of my fellow LARP'ers to the glorious world of history ^^
