Title: Longpoint 2014, MD/DC area HEMA event (classes & tournaments)
Post by: Sir Edward on 2014-02-08, 18:27:09

For 2014, Longpoint is being held July 17th – 20th. The first couple of years, this event was relatively small, but it has grown quite a bit, and has several tournaments with different weapons. I've had to miss it the last couple of years due to schedule conflicts, which is a shame since it's a relatively local event, and we usually have to travel quite a bit to get to other ones.

http://fightlongpoint.com/ (http://fightlongpoint.com/)

Anyone planning on going? I haven't signed up yet because I just haven't thought that far ahead in scheduling. ;)

I just registered for the event, and signed up for the Steel longsword, and Synthetic longsword competitions.

I put my club affiliation as "Order of the Marshal"

To see who is signed up for what, you can see the attendance list here:

If they would get the schedule figured out and posted, I might go for it. I don't want to do the 4 day thing, only the weekend, but I have no idea what classes will be when (or overlapping) and I don't want to shell out money for it unless I know it's something I want to do. I'm interested in the cutting tournament, primarily.. so I'm holding out until they have more info posted.

Yeah, I might just go Friday-Sunday, and skip Thursday. So I went ahead and got the full weekend registration.

I must be blind because I didn't see your name on the list.  ???

I'll be signing up for the Steel and Synthetic longsword tournaments as well. :)

That list must be horrifically out of date then. Lovely.

What exactly is the purpose of this event?

EDIT: Is it for SCA fighters, to learn, or to watch? I may have to ponder on this. But thanks for the heads up :) I'll have to see how much I do tree and snow work in that time. Is there a limit on the time I have to sign up?

For what it's worth, I intend to go. It's nice having events that ar around the corner

This is for practitioners of historical swordsmanship, that much I know.  I was supposed to attend last year's but couldn't make it; it is held in DC but I don't know much more beyond that.  Sirs Edward, Brian and James have attended in the past- but if you click the link you'll get to see what seminars they're offering.
Title: Re: Longpoint 2014, MD/DC area HEMA event (classes & tournaments)

That's right. It's a collection of classes/seminars on Historical Combat, plus tournaments. It's not SCA-related at all. It's part of the modern HEMA movement (Historical European Martial Arts).

The classes and competitions will include wrestling/unarmed, longsword, sword and buckler, test-cutting, and so on.

This year I think it's a 4-day event? I may not go for the whole thing. Maybe Friday-Sunday, or something. I signed up for some of the competitions, so the schedule for those may influence which days I attend.

Slight correction - it's held in MD, not DC

I am ashamed to admit this, BUT, I don't own a sword :( I probabaly don't need one for some of the events anyway. I don't think I will attend this years, but next years. I may also be busy that week for I am in the marching band and the summer camp begins around that time frame. Again, theres always next year  :) Looks truly awesome though.

Shortpoint, the prequel to this event, was a great turnout. Looks like Longpoint will be quite interesting!

Yeah I'll be registering later this week. I heard that you can't sign up for both the LS open steel and LS synthetic tournaments since they will be running concurrently. Bummer really, If you and Ed are going, perhaps we could bring our armor and do some Harnischfechten pickup bouts and/or help generate some greater interest in the local HEMA/WMA community?

Once I see the final schedule and whether or not I am going to Longpoint, I'll have a better grasp on that. If we are doing classes & tournament for 2 days in a row, I'm not sure how much energy I would have for armored combat - especially with the time it takes to get me in and out of armor. :) If I go just to watch, shouldn't be a problem.

Why do you always get these things backwards? You're supposed to tell the ww2 people that you can't do that since you have a medieval event. Come on, man!  :-\

They're working on the scheduling now, and correcting any mistakes in the tournament registrations. This looks like a pretty good sized event now.

It looks like they put you in the synthetic LS tournament. Is that the one you are going to stay with? - It is a much smaller pool than the Steel tournament.

Matt Walsh isn't listed, but he might be waiting like I am since I'm a bit unsure if I want to risk my only steel blade in those longer duels and potentially frequent buffalos that was at short point.  :-\

Yeah, originally they marked me down for steel. For now they've moved me to Synthetic, since I asked which one starts later in the event. Steel starts Friday morning, and Synthetic starts Saturday morning. I figured later is better, since I'm not 100% sure if I'll be taking off work or not.

Steel seems to have attracted a lot more people. It has a lot of capable people, and also a lot of people I don't know. I'm concerned about buffaloes too.

I've competed with synthetic before, but this is the first time I've seen steel used in a heavily competitive environment like this. I'm curious to see how well it works out. This is a case where I think the synthetics have a slight edge in terms of safety & comfort, simply in that they have wider surfaces, so it doesn't hurt as much. Theoretically it should be roughly equivalent, but it will depend a lot on the people.

It looks like both the steel and synthetic longsword tourneys are on Friday now, with the finals on Saturday:

I had them keep me in the synthetic longsword, as it's late enough in the day, that even if I end up needing to work that morning, theoretically I should still be able to make that.

But I also had them add me to the messer tourney on Saturday. That will be fun. I'm so out of practice though, I know they're probably going to destroy me. :)

Okay then I’ll sign up for the synthetic tournament. I noticed a couple of people are representing two groups so I’ll do the same with MASHS // Order of the Marshal. :)

Awesome. I'm looking forward to this. I probably won't get out there on the Thursday, but a lot of that is devoted to staff/judges anyway.

The...tiny tunic?

That would be this... :)

It's a child-sized tunic, for getting a volunteer kid from the audience at our demos, to hold the offering helm. The idea here was that whoever shows up last to the event, has to wear the child-sized tunic.... and hopefully at least a modesty sock, if nothing else with it... :)

It's probably still worth coming, even if just for the weekend. The longsword tourneys are on Friday primarily, so you probably won't want to compete (unless you do messer on Saturday). But the event is worth it just to meet a lot of the people in the WMA/HEMA community, and attend some of the classes and the like.

Ben Michels from Maryland KDF messaged me on FB and asked if I'd be willing to be an extra judge for the Steel tournament and I agreed to be available if they needed me. I originally hadn't planned on attending Thursday's events since the longsword tournaments start on Friday but they are having Staff orientations on Thursday as well as a few hours of open floor dueling in the afternoon. So I'll take an extra half-day off from work and maybe get a few names checked off my bucket list! ;)

Going to miss this one, now. Multiple financial complications, and mostly need to get a lot of things done that I missed due to MDFF/VARF weekends compounded with multiple recent illnesses and mechanical issues I'm trying to get dug out from under.

Good luck, gentlemen!

Ed, That vid is what is making my Dad go into over drive for supporting me to go and actually be taught longsword.
MEMAG place near philly(though in jersey)
And it also helped once he saw that it was only 40 to 60 a month where as Advanced fencing had been twice that much.
