Title: FS: GDFB Sugarloaf helm [sold]
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-06-03, 14:37:49
If anyone is interested, I'd be willing to sell my GDFB sugarloaf. I was thinking $60. I paid $65 + shipping to KOA. It's still new, and hasn't been used for anything except those photos I did as a test fitting with my 14th C kit.

I like it, it's just a little too small for my long nose. I believe it fit Wolf pretty well. I'll bring it with me on Sunday so you guys can look at it.

I've decided to try GDFB's "pot helm" which is like a visored sugarloaf. It's heavy, but comes with padding and so on. I have it on the way to me now, so now it's time to let go of the Sugarloaf.

Hey, I'll take it!  Definitely want that helm...if it fits.  My nose is rather stubby so maybe it'll fit me?  That pot helm you mentioned, didn't Sir Brian have his up for sale last year?  Think its the same one.  Either way, I'll take this off your hands if you like.

You know, I don't know. Was that the same model? Well hmmm..

I do believe it is the same.  Is this it?

For some odd reason, I can't link the image directly.  As for the one you're selling, is that unpadded?

Yup, that's the one I have on order. Of course, as always, this is a bit of an experiment. I might get it and then hate it. And I totally spaced on the fact that Sir Brian's old one might be the same thing.

Yep, it's unpadded, but it has a leather suspension and chin-strap, so it's instantly wearable. It's also pretty light.

I ended up canceling my order for the helm (I ordered some other things that they'll still send me though). I've always wanted a good sugarloaf, but I'm also having a hard time fitting it in with my kits. I have a wonderful great helm already, and I really need to pick a good bascinet or something for the 14th C kit. The sugarloaf isn't fitting in cleanly.  :-\

I'm kind of bummed you cancelled the order, because I was thinking about that helmet and would have wanted to see yours up close. :) As I told you last night in class, I've wanted to do a 14th c.  transitional harness for some time, and seeing yours has spurred me on even more, particularly because my 15th century one is almost semi-complete. (I say "semi" because even when it's done, we all know that a kit is never *really* done. ;) )

It's always possible I'll go for it again at some point, but for now I wanted to take more time to think on what I really want, rather than shotgunning orders out. :)

Well I have this helm from Armstreet. I still have it as I didn't really pursue the sale of it. I can
Try and remove my jury-rigged method of keeping the visor up and bring it with me Sunday as well.
I think I was asking $100 last year so I’ll let it go for $75. Mine has a liner I made for it.

Say what? Since when do we in this hobby actually think about our purchases before we buy, buy, BUY! ;)

Actually, that's exactly why I haven't started on my 14th century harness yet. I'm still planning it out. Maybe I should start a thread on it. :)

Haha! Yeah, that's my usual mode of operation. Order a whole bunch of stuff, hate half of it, and use the other half. :)

But yes, by all means, start up a thread so we can fuel your spending too! :)

That looks pretty close there, Sir Edward...might be some stylistic differences but they do look almost the same.  Sir Brian, what did you not like about it?  I may've asked that already but can't remember.

Well the visor doesn't stay up at all so I jury rigged an ugly though not visible "fix" to keep the visor up. I am in the process of removing it now. I have a spring pin setup but I'm not sure if I can get it done before this Sunday. I am also putting on a new chin strap and securing them with post screws instead of those ugly aluminum rivets and nuts. This is a stainless steel helm and it has some weight to it, about equal in weight to my new bascinet with aventail. The padding I made is a bit thin but will easily allow for a coif and is velcro'd in so it can be easily hand washed. I'm only parting with it because I don't really wear it all that much anymore. I wore it maybe once all of last year, so if someone else can put it to better use then let it serve a greater purpose than dust collecting in my closet!  ;)

That is a sweet looking helm and I think might go nice with the Teutonic Knight I'm eventually going to put together. I have alot of things I'm trying to save up for right now, but if there are no takers this weekend, I might be tempted later this summer when I've got the rest of the stuff I want for my current 16th/17th century kit paid for. Since I'm actually doing some reenacting with that kit, it kinda takes priority right now.

Funny you mentioned Teutonic Knight Matt since that is predominantly what I wear it with!  ;)

I was able to remove the atrocious visor latch but can't find the spring pin I had saved. I might be able to prepare another one tomorrow but that is looking unlikely. I did manage to add the new chin strap though so that is ready to go. Again I will bring this helm with me on Sunday so anyone wishing to check it out is more than welcome. At this point I'll even toss in the white and black feathers.

UPDATE:
Success! I managed to prepare TWO spring pins but won't be able to put them in prior to departing
this afternoon. :(
However as I was working on them it occured to me that Phil the blacksmith at VARF will perhaps be able to put the spring pin in. I'll have to ask him when I go to purchase my Hungarian Axe from him. ;)

I LOVE that axe, Sir Brian!  What a sweet deal...and cool that he can fix that helm for you.  When will you meet up with him again?

Yes well I discovered rather quickly that you Templar types prefer battle axes to parasols which is understandable but the
parasols might have served your fallen brethern better at the battle of Hattin!  :D

As for the helm Phil couldn't get to it, truly he did not seem very confident to attempt it, no worries though I'll give it a try later
this week!   :-\

We shall have no more mention of parasols, Sir Brian- I can keep your secret but not if you tell it yourself!  LOL

As for the helm, I thought he was going to fix it then...just as well; something to work on/look forward to, eh?

Well I took off from work early so I could catch up on a little bit of sleep and unpack the car and gear. I spent the afternoon washing gambesons and surcoats and cleaning my armor when I discovered the strap on my other splinted cuisse broke so that will have to be another day's project because I spent a couple of hours putting in the spring pins. I decided to go with two, one to keep the visor up of course and another to keep it locked all the way down. I have the second one in but the first is a bit more problematic but nearly done. I'll post some pictures in another new thread if I get it finished in the next week or so. :)

What is this "washing gambesons" you speak of?  I've learned that their defensive qualities increase with the amount of dirt and muck impregnated in the fabric.  Of course the offensive qualities increase as well...

Never stand downwind from a (medieval) army on the march.

You know it's interesting. I wash my arming shirts and surcoats pretty frequently, but some of the others I don't. My gambeson that I use for HEMA hasn't been washed yet. It's only now getting to the point where I think it may need it, and I've been using it for years. My arming cotte for my plate armor can't be washed with the voiders on. So far it's doing OK too. Some things get filthy, and others just get wet with sweat and then dry out without getting stinky. Or they just air-out well. Strange.

Combine that with a tight corset, you can literally take their breath away! :)

"I'll take the one in the armor!"

"I'll take the one with long hair!"

Those ladies were hilarious; primarily because our own ladies were not around. :D

Well I don't know about you lads, but after a few forays my arming clothes start to get a little gamey, at least to me.  Nothing like a whiff of old sweat to start the day, no?

That being said, I go a few times between washings.  The clothes, I mean.  lol
