Title: Hello Gentlemen
Post by: LionPride32 on 2013-11-11, 23:26:42
H the codes of hoello to all!! My name is Tommy. I will be know here for now as LionPride32. I found this website while surfing links from the Sword Buyers Guide site. I've always had an interest in medieval things but my heavy study and basically obsession with the high middle ages started over the summer. My greatest inspiration by far is the one and only, Richard I of England - Cour de Lion, THE LIONHEART!!!  I've been reading every book about the Middle ages I can find, specifically, "A History of the Middle Ages" by Hywell Williams, "Richard the Lionheart" by John Gillingham, and, fittingly, "Knight" by Robert Jones.  I am also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, so I have instilled in me already the values of honor, courage, a
nd commitment!

Sorry for rambling, I'm just very excited to be a part of this forum and I'm confident that Ill eventually be accepted into your ranks!

Hail William Marshall and LONG LIVE KING RICHARD!!!

Thank you for the welcome, and your welcome for my service. Every vet shouuld get a good pat on the back! I'm dying to psot some pics of my swords and daggers, but apparently the pics are too big in kb and I don't know how to shrink them. (I'm using a phone right now). Anyways, I'm glad to be here. So is there any particular thread or area of the forum that newbies should go to become familiar with the Knights and s everyone or just post whereve I please? (I'm already thinking ahead) Again thanks for accepting me to the forum and let my journey begin.

I've definetly found the right place. Ill be working on my kit over the winter, gotta get xmas out of the way. Currently I do have a tunic with the 3 lions of King Richard ( I would consider myself one of his elite right hand men) and got the Richard sword from the Robin Hood movie, and fittingly a very nice William Marshall sword. Any adivice or personal stories I can get from anyone as far has how you built up your kit? I'm thinking my next step is chainmail and some gloves.

Well as you stated you seem to have zeroed in your timeline to the late 1100’s to early 1200’s. This will make the choice in armor relatively simple: A maille hauberk, maille chausses, a long surcoat, a shield and helm.  :)

Good evening, sirs. As for my kit, I'm about halfway there as far as what time period is in my heart and what I'll be representing (1180's-1220's). I did read you must have armour to be become a full fledged knight. I never really pictured myself in actual armour, but as Sir Brian said, chainmal, helm, tunic and sword (plus many accesories). I suppose I'll get the idea as I go on and learn from you all. And Sir Brian, GREEN is my color, and I've missed my chance to be the green knight!

Til next time.....

Heh, well considering there really are only 5 colors and 2 metals in heraldry, there are only so many color combinations that can be accomplished. Don't feel like you can't use a color just because someone else is. :)

5 colors and 2 metals...This I didn't know. What are the colors and metals, and does each color represent a different value?? My personal arms are going to be somewhat similar of Edward III of England, as my father is french, my mother english (her maiden name is Worthington, who originated in Lancastershire). Lions and fluer de lis...still thinking. Anyway, about the colors???

For a great crash course on Heraldry, there's a great primer on the SCA site:

http://heraldry.sca.org/armory/primer/ (http://heraldry.sca.org/armory/primer/)

But to answer your question, the colors are here:

http://heraldry.sca.org/armory/primer/tinctures.html (http://heraldry.sca.org/armory/primer/tinctures.html)

Basically red, green, blue, black, and purple (rare) are the colors, and the metals are white (silver) and yellow (gold). The distinction between a "color" and a "metal" is that the metals are bright, whereas the other colors are not, so there are rules about how they can be combined.

Armor is indeed a requirement to be a knight, however, armor appropriate to your time period. So you need not have a "full plate" harness for your time period. Knighthood is many steps down the road, and an admirable goal. The path laid out with the Order builds upon itself, so that you begin with clothing, then later, acquire official heraldry/arms, then after a set of armor (as well as peer review and being deemed worthy) - then comes knighthood. Enjoy the journey, it is part of the fun!

Sir Edward ninja'd me on the colors. :)

As Douglas said, don't worry too much about "your color" being taken. Sir William and I both have a "Black Knight" label (at least a specific harness of mine will), as black is our primary color on our heraldry. In any group with more than 7 knights, they will have to share colors with another member. It's also very much a modern concept of being "the (color) knight", as historically, plenty of people shared colors, hence the importance of charges (symbols) and divisions (lines/separations). The lion and fleur-de-lys will set you apart from Sir Brian, as even sharing colors, you don't share charges - or even more specifically, you could have the same charges AND colors, with a different division, or different placement of charges, and still be "unique" from a historical perspective.

There is a free Coat of Arms website you can use to design your own and make comparisons: http://inkwellideas.com/coat_of_arms/ (http://inkwellideas.com/coat_of_arms/)

Well I laud your fine choice in colors!  ;D

Also as an aside, my ‘Green Knight’ moniker is one that I embraced after being referred to as the green knight from renfaire patrons which spurred my curiosity to investigate if there was any historical basis of the title besides the Arthurian legends which resulted in discovering an Irish hereditary title that originated back to antiquity and so I adapted my personae to reflect that ancient Irish title.  :)

I decided this was a good time to update my page slightly, and added the grid I had for when I was deciding on my heraldry. I also added verbiage on how I arrived at my final decision. It may be of some use to you.

Welcome, good Sir, and thank you for your service!

Seriously, don't stress the color thing. At this point there's about 3 of us Black and White knights, I'd suppose. I'd say your identifier will be more your main charge than your color. Mine is the White Oak Tree. In fact, in period you see many allegorical passages that refer to people by their charge. Dante's inferno is an example, and one can see in Italy the Guelphs and Ghibellines adopting various charges as snubs at the other faction's charges.

Color identifiers outside of Arthurian legend are probably modern renn-faire patron anachronism, like how at MDRF I was known to one group as "The Templar" even though I was clearly wearing Teutonic regalia (as I am wont to do).

As far as the masses go, it seems to be so.  No sweat off my back as I do moonlight as a Templar every once in a while.  :)

Welcome! And thank you for your service! For knowing where to post is quite simple. Just post it where you think it belongs. If it is wrong, i am sure Sir Edward would be more than happy to place it in the right spot. If you need to know anything, or need advice the Knights on this site will be more than happy to answer! By the way I also favor the green :) If I am correct you choose the time of The Orders patron, Sir William Marshal. Idk how much you know about him but he is a man to look into.
Title: Re: Hello Gentlemen
Post by: LionPride32 on 2013-11-27, 15:49:47
Yes, it is indeed the time frame I place myself in. Though the main reason is because it was the time of my main Medieval insperation and hero, Richard the Lionheart. I could write a book on everything I know about HIM, but actually, since William Marshall was one of his right hand men, and a huge part of the High Middle Ages and Knighthood itself, I do know quite a bit about Marshall. He served under Richard's father Henry II, and kept with the Plantgenet family right gthrough thereighns of Richard, John and Henry III, if I'm not mistaken.
So, yeah, I'm glad I found this particular Order, as Marshall's time frame is right smack dab in the center of the era which is my passion.

Good afternoon Gents,

Feeling a little.....confused. One of your number (don't know if he's a offcialy in the Order) suggested I wait until I have a hauberk to evenput my application in. I do not have and can't afford one at this time, but will shortly. I've been posting here for months now, I have my pics of my kit on Facebook (Tom Shorette) - I can't figure out to post them here. My kit is thus: a chainmail coif, Lionheart tunic, cheap gloves (to be soon upgraded), a William Marshall battle ready sword, a King Richard Robin Hood film sword, and a Gen2 Crusader dagger. I feel its time for my application...Obviously my kit will be completed and accurate upon rising through the ranks of the Order. So, should I go ahead and apply?

Thank you, good sirs!
Long live the King!

I will not hide it was Me that recommended a hauberk. But if you feel you are ready than do as you please. I simply wished to aid you in your quest, I ment no misguidance. I am sorry.
Title: Re: Hello Gentlemen

Armor isn't needed to apply. It becomes a requirement for the later ranks, which essentially is a partial kit at Squire, and a complete kit for Knight.

Technically you can apply at any time. It helps tremendously to participate on the forum for a while first, since the number one reason for denying membership is just a lack of knowing anything about the applicant.

The application is here:  http://orderofthemarshal.org/members/membership/application/ (http://orderofthemarshal.org/members/membership/application/)

Posting pictures on the forum is pretty easy. For facebook images, you can set them to "Public", and when viewing one, just grab the web address (URL) from the browser's address bar, and paste that into your message. Highlight the link in your message while you're still editing, and hit the "image" button (it's the button above the left-most smiley in the message editor), and it will be wrapped in "IMG" tags to share it inline in the message.

Another easy way to do it is to upload your images to a photo-sharing site like Flickr, Photobucket, Imgur, etc. Nearly all of those give you easy-to-copy "BBcode" to paste in forums to share the images.

We have the requirements spelled out here:

Sir Edward covered the kit requirements; none at Page level. Check over them, let us know if you have any questions, and fill in that application.

No Kit requirements even at the Yeoman. Which I am thankful for...my soft kits is 12/13th century and very shoddy. And my Hard Kit is still being build slowly...and literally by hand...but I urge you to stick around and talk to us on the forums and see if this is a community you want to invest in long term.

I can't recommend it enough, the encouragement and knowledge gleaned here in the past few months have been amazing!

I think I've posted enough to at least put in my app. The thing about pictures is, right now I'm kind of...poor. We don't have a PC. I use my phone to write everything on here, and I have no idea HOW to copy and paste. Pictures of me and all my swords, my tunic, my whole get-ujp is on my Facebook page, but my pics are PRIVATE and I will not change them. I am a member of a certain group on fb, there is another group that are complete and utter sociopaths, they steal your facebook pics and pist them on their page, just to talk sh**. Their psychos. So unless I go to the library, you'll have to friend request me on facebook. Tom Shorette is my name, just send me a request! Thanks all!
