Title: Medieval Art
Post by: Mike W. on 2014-02-24, 22:38:20
I've been thinking about starting a thread where those of us who make pictorial art that pertains to medieval history can share our work and provide insightful commentary/discussion. I'll inaugurate it with some of my sketches.

Nice work, Baron.  I used to play at drawing knights when I was a kid, but mine were nowhere near as elaborate- and I was going off of drawings that were in a book and all the knights wore maille so...there you go.  This is really nice stuff, especially the Gothic one.

German Gothic!! ;D I find that shiny metal is darn difficult to draw, even with a good reference, so kudos on that!

Oddly, I don't think I've ever done anything specifically medieval. I have a kinda-sorta Mongol thing that I did a while back.... I'll have to look through my paintings and sketches and such and see if I have anything worth showing.

Very nicely drawn, thank you for sharing!

No one on this site wants to see my (lack of) drawing ability.   ;)

I'm kinda tempted to get involved in the art of illuminating manuscripts. But then I remember I have enough time/money consuming hobbies as it is.

A couple of years ago, I sat down with some colored pencils and tried to do some Codex-Manesse inspired sketches. Haven't done much of anything else since.

I've always loved the codex pics. Nice job!!

I've been considering trying to do something in the style of the Codex Manesse for quite some time now. Just haven't gotten around to actually doing it. Heh, there are a lot of things I've been considering that I haven't gotten around to doing. ::)

Case in point: I had such big plans when I did this. There was to be an entire series of pseudo-historical portraits of ladies from various cultures and civilizations. Unfortunately, it never got past this and a half-finished Aztec priestess. :P

That's pretty freaking awesome. Sadly, my comprehension of color is at the level of a kindergartener, so plain graphite drawings for me. As such, I've always had immense respect for those who can paint.

I call it, "Fair maiden trapped in the tower waiting for her knight in shining armor to come rescue her"

I didn't draw that... you guys would make anything I try look exactly like that, though. Very nice!

I don't draw very frequently, but my medium of artistic expression is photography.  These are medieval in nature, and you've seen them if you're on facebook.  So I will slap them in this thread as my 'medieval art.'

The first two are kind of 'Medieval Noir' and go together... :)

"Chivalry"

"Golden Spurs"

I've always been a fan of photography. I do really like the blend of medieval subjects with a modern medium.

Your work reminds me of a photographer who used a Civil War-era camera to take tin-types of his comrades in Afghanistan.

Oh wow, that's really awesome!  You see so many people trying to fake civil war imagery for their LH Civil War kits, and that gets old... but to see the juxtaposition of a modern military subject on a 19th century medium is pretty cool!

THAT is really cool. They look like normal greyscale photos at first, but then you realize...no, something's a little different about them.

Considering that the Maciejowski Bible depicted ancient events with contemporary soldiers, I'm a bit tempted to illustrate a passage using modern US military troops as the subjects. Nothing quite like David, Saul, and Apache Helicopters.

That would be so awesome! I've actually seen some similar examples to this from artists on the net, with illuminated manuscript-style images made portraying modern settings or even futuristic things.

Well it is based off this.
I know not the creator but it was a post on the book of faces by the order.
I loved it so much I wanted to try and make it for class

That's a Graham Turner. He's one of my favorites artists. :)

Well, one of my favorites who predominantly work in the historical genre, anyway. I have a lot of favorite artists in general.

Yep Graham Turner. He's on Book of Faces, his signature is on the bottom. ;) He did a lot of art for the Osprey books.

It's just a lot of manipulation in photoshop and the use of a several robust plug-ins and tweaking.  Here's another in the same vein (pun intended), kind of a cool shot of Chris Cameron trying to puncture Sean Hayes's carotid artery :)

I really like the gritty feeling of your Photoshop enhancements.  The realism is evident in Sean's rib-stop as it's obviously seen prior damage from a downward blow.   8)

I think one of my favorite parts about a lot of these photographs is that they truly capture the way we view our world/hobby (well, at least the way I see it). Really taking my favorite things about medieval life and highlighting them in an artistic way. Kudos to you Ian!
