All Best Stuff - Riveted Aventail Question

(1/5) > >>

Sir Rodney:
After having my butted mail shredded last weekend (once again), I’m seriously considering a riveted mail aventail.

My goal is twofold.  I’d like to have a more historically accurate aventail, and I’d like to stop replacing rings after every weekend of fighting.

I’m eyeing up the aventail from All Best Stuff and would appreciate the opinions of the Brethren of Modern Chivalry.  I know it’s not the most historically accurate at 9mm, but it’s a far cry from butted.  Have there been any bad reviews off All Best Stuff here or elsewhere?  If so, I can’t seem to find them.

It seems that they don’t carry spare 9mm rings or a tool.  Would Icefalcon’s rings and tool be compatible?

Aiden of Oreland:
To answer your question about All Best Stuff, it has had some hi regards from members of this forum. My brother is awaiting his hauberk from All Best Stuff and I plan to order my own because of the good reviews. Plus it's a great price for what you pay for. But with everything there is another side of the coin. Shipping is very expensive. So in the end you save about $20 dollars on a similar product from another seller. It is also Indian, but again from what people on this forum have said it is of good quality.

I think all mail can be compatible as long as its the right size and gauge, and style of coarse. But I have no experience with ice falcon mail. Tools shouldn't be a problem. The truest of answer will only come when you actually get the product, that is of coarse if someone has experience with the two.

Sir Edward:
I've had no experience with All Best Stuff, so I can't really say.

I've ordered several things from Icefalcon, and have been happy with them. The Icefalcon tool and rivets work great for doing work on the GDFB mail, I've found. As long as the ring size is pretty close, then Icefalcon's rings will work great.

The riveting tool needs to match the size/type of rivets used, for the most part. The tools I have from both Icefalcon and GDFB seem almost interchangeable though.

And of course the rings from Icefalcon should come with the rivets. So again, the only question is if the ring-size is similar to that of the mail from All Best Stuff. At 9mm, I think it is.

Sir James A:
As Sir Edward said, IceFalcon or GFDB should be mostly interchangeable with AllBestStuff. The 9mm denotes inside dimension, and it's likely to all be similar. Pass muster under a microscope? Probably not. From a foot away? Almost definitely.

I've mix-n-matched Ice and GDFB rings. Shhhhhhhhh ;)

Ian:
Here's the thing.  There's nothing better than Indian flat ring riveted maille on the market, so it's the only option for even strict living history groups short of having custom maille made for you.  So you should be fine.  I have an icefalcon wedge riveted aventail on my helm, and love it.  I have a flat ring wedge riveted haubergeon on order from Custom Chainmail (they tailor their stuff to you), and will let you know how that turns out as well.

But when it comes down to it, allbeststuff, gdfb, icefalcon etc... it's really virtually all the same stuff.  I decided to go with Custom Chainmail only to save myself the hassle of in depth tailoring.  For an aventail though, the tailoring is not quite as severe, so you'd be safe to go with any of your favorite Indian Maille re-sellers :)
