Gentle knights, I recommend me unto you
« on: 2012-10-24, 02:07:00 »
Good even, gentle knights.  I recommend me unto you, and pray you receive me into this noble fellowship.

On a less archaic note, my given name is actually Percival, although most people call me Percy, and you all may as well.  It isn't my original given name, but I changed my name to Percival because I loathed my given name from birth and liked this name best.

I currently live in Vancouver, Canada and work as an ESL tutor, although I'm planning to attend law school beginning next year.  I originally wanted to be mediaevalist and hold a BA and MA in mediaeval studies, writing my thesis on knightly identity in the Middle English romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and its relation to the development of the actual institution in late mediaeval England.  Some years ago, however, I decided that I did not want an academic career, despite my love of the Middle Ages (and chivalric culture in particular).  I may eventually try for a PhD, but not in the near future.

I'm somewhat of a latecomer to Western Martial Arts, having only become involved a year or two ago.  My involvement has been limited thus far, but I hope to do more.  I do volunteer work for a local WMA school here in Vancouver called Academie Duello, and I've taken some swordplay classes and tried out their mounted-combat programme.  I don't own any gear or garb yet, but I'd like to acquire some once my finances permit, as I've got a good sense of the kit I'd like to assemble.  I've never done any reenactment, either, although I'm interested in trying it out at some point.

Hail, and welcome!

Ah, I've heard good things about Academie Duello. Don't worry about being "new" to WMA. In a way we all are. :) But you can learn a lot in a year, and be proficient in very short order.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome, Sir Percival. With your interests and experience at the Academie Duello you will fit right in. I would love to learn mounted combat, but am content for now to remain a soldier with his own feet on the ground. Also, I took the path you almost did and majored in medieval studies, with emphasis on Latin apocalyptic literature, and on university life in the Middle Ages - primarily the goliards and their songs. I now work in a bookstore.  ::)

Hail and welcome!

Hail & well-met Sir Percival. A seeker of the mind's enlightenment through literature is just as admirable as one's dedication to improvement of WMA combat training skills. "Keep your mind as sharp as your sword" is my motto!! Welcome!!! :) I love Vancouver & am your brethren on the East Coast. Hit me up any time.

Welcome Sir Percival...always liked that name, especially since he was known as the third greatest knight of the Table Round, but only second to Galahad in purity of spirit.

I, too, would love to learn mounted combat.  Hell, I just love to ride.
