The afternoon's storm
« on: 2008-06-04, 20:10:35 »

Yikes, we had quite the storm roll through here. We got evacuated to the basement at work for a while, since there was a tornado warning. One of my servers at home yanks radar data all day long, and it grabbed this one showing the warning zone extending to the bay:

It was exciting all right.  The worst of it only lasted about 5 minutes here.  My two barometers (Grover and Cookie) went to go hide as the rain was coming down horizontally.  Tommy and I were listening to WTOP and heard the Emergency Broadcast System actually work (not test mode.)  Doug Hill, longtime local meteorologist, said he had never seen a line of storms like that in this area before.  Arlington Public Schools had several schools lose power and phone service and sent out an emergency bulletin that if you had a child in an after school activity to please go pick him up.

That is so very cool that you got a shot of the radar!  It's in the front bow, the red area, that rotation was showing up on radar.

Glad you are okay!

NWS reports that a second round of strong thunderstorms will be passing over
Northern Virginia between 7 and 11 pm tonight.  It will be less severe than the
storm this afternoon, but cautions should be taken.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 8pm.

We have wires and trees down all over Arlington.  There were a few reports of tornadoes in the DC area, nothing official yet.

We just finished the second round of storms.  Tommy and I were at Scouts with water coming in the church from a flooded stairwell.  Chris and Mark were at home manning the pump for our flooded stairwell.

Weather forecast is for a third line to come through later tonight.

Quite exciting.  Off to class, should be a fun drive.  :)

Hey Sir Edward!  Missed you at class last night.  (Through rain and sleet, etc.  nothing is going to keep me from dagger night.)  Did you make it through the storms okay?  It sounds like it was rough in your neck of the woods.

261,000 without electricity after the storms
June 5, 2008 - 7:13am

WASHINGTON - Some 261,000 homes and businesses are without electricity and several major school systems are closed after powerful storms blew through the area Wednesday afternoon, killing at least one person.

The National Weather Service issued over 70 warnings for the region Thursday.

Teams from the National Weather Service will be out to assess whether any tornadoes touched down. Reports of suspected tornadoes have come in from Anne Arundel County, Chesapeake Beach in Calvert County, as well as the Annandale/Falls Church area and Ashburn in Virginia.

Yeah, sorry I missed class last night. I had some things I needed to work on here, and I'm often less inclined to make the trip through the storms when it's a night that I'd be coming all the way from Sterling. :)

I saw a lot of downed trees on the way in to work this morning. I still have electricity, but my co-worker who lives out in Leesburg doesn't, last I heard.

How many people showed up? Are we still doing dagger next week?

It was just Mark and I last night.  I wasn't going to miss dagger, so Mark didn't have a choice.  ;)  Dagger again next week too.  Life is good.  :)
